Remarks:
Detection of COVID-19 through PCR methods is currently the most reliable laboratory diagnostic test. However,
as with all other laboratory tests, the result should be correlated with clinical and other pertinent ancillary
findings by a qualified, licensed physician. Repeat testing is suggested if warranted.

Limitations:
The detection of a viral RNA is dependent on the viral load retrieved from the specimen. The sensitivity
varies in the disease course. Pre-analytical variables, (i.e. specimen collection and quality, handling/shipping)
may also affect the results.

The performance characteristics of this laboratory developed test have been validated at the Molecular
Pathology, and is continuously being monitored as part of its quality assurance procedures,
including enrollment with external proficiency testing at Research Institute for Tropical Medicine (RITM).
