4 MAGMACOMPOSER 4.4 MANUAL
1 Introduction
In what follows, the term "presentation" is applied to a sequence of any number of MAGMASOFT®
result images and further objects that are being generated from simulation results. You must ge-
nerate these result images before using MAGMAcomposer with the help of the 'Images' function
of the Postprocessor (Î Ch. 6.1, page 129 of the Postprocessor on Geometry 4.4 Manual). Plea-
se note that the postprocessor generates not only images for the use in MAGMAcomposer auto-
matically, but several kinds of result files (objects). Further details are given in Ch. 3.1, page 19.
Usually, such a presentation is a collection of 3-D and 2-D results, 3-D and 2-D animations and
text elements.
6 MAGMACOMPOSER 4.4 MANUAL
The file formats that are used by MAGMAcomposer for the storing and further processing of pre-
sentations are proprietary formats. This means that they can be used within MAGMAcomposer /
MAGMAviewer and MAGMASOFT® only, but not in any other presentation software.
MAGMAcomposer and MAGMAviewer have been developed as communication tools. You can
use them to exchange MAGMASOFT® results within your company, with customers, suppliers
and designers fast and easily.
You will compose presentations with MAGMAcomposer. Then you will run them with the free
MAGMAviewer tool. Please refer to the MAGMAviewer 4.4 Manual for further information on
MAGMAviewer.
Proceed as follows to generate the results that are needed for the presentations:
Ö Prepare the wanted simulation results with the 'prepare fast postprocessing' function for faster
display.
Ö Generate and save the wanted image sequences. A sequence is available for MAGMAcom-
poser as soon as you have clicked on the 'Generate' button in the 'Image - Sequence Selec-
tion' window and MAGMASOFT® has finished the image generation.
Further details are supplied in the Postprocessor on Geometry 4.4 Manual. Please refer to Ch.
2.3, page 15 ('prepare fast postprocessing') and to Ch. 6.1, page 129 ('Images' / generating image
sequences) above all.

CH. 3: RESULTS 19
3 Results
3.1.1 Overview
If you create presentations, their chapters and slides for chapters, wildcards appear first of all in
the presentation tree and the main window ("Click to add text", "Double click to add object"). To
add text, just select the wanted slide in the tree, click within a text field in the main window and
enter/replace the text.
In order to integrate images or other graphical objects into a presentation, proceed as follows:
Ö Select the wanted slide with a mouse click in the presentation tree.
Ö Double-click on the wildcard image (or click with the right mouse button and choose 'New Re-
sult Object' from the pop-up menu). The window for selecting results appears (Fig. 3-1).
20 MAGMACOMPOSER 4.4 MANUAL
In this window you can select all available graphical data for a presentation. You can only select
one object per slide.
By default, the names of the files appear in the result list (on the right). Use the two buttons at the
top on the right to switch between this mode and a thumbnail display like in Fig. 3-2.
CH. 3: RESULTS 21
In the directory list (on the left), all version directories within the "IMAGES" folder are listed that you
have created with the 'Images' function of the postprocessor (Î Ch. 1.3, page 7) within the current
project. (For each version, the program also creates a special folder called "@imports", Î Ch.
3.1.2, page 22). You can access the directories by clicking on the tabs. For the selected directory,
all sub-directories will appear, which you must again select with a mouse click. Their contents will
then appear in the result list.
Ö Use the tabs above the result list to define the kind of object that you want to display. Available
are:
'Image' All generated images from simulation results
'Sequence' The sequence of all images (always one only)
22 MAGMACOMPOSER 4.4 MANUAL
Ö Proceed the same way for all created slides (apart from slides that contain text only). Of
course you can also edit slides that you create later as described above (Î Ch. 3.2, page 25).
In the result browser, you can also import external images into a special folder and then integrate
them into the slides as described above.
For each project version, the program will automatically create a folder "../IMAGES/v<n>/@im-
ports", which appears in the directory list and whose contents you can select in the main window
as described above. This folder will be created already when you execute 'create project'
(MAGMASOFT® project administration), if you have created the project with MAGMASOFT® 4.4.
On the other hand, if you work with older projects, it will be created once you invoke the result
browser here.
Ö Copy the external images into the "@imports" folder by clicking with the right mouse button
in the main window. A pop-up menu appears. Choose 'Import Files' and select the images via
a file selection window.
(You may also copy the images into the "@imports" folder via your operating system (e.g.
the Windows Explorer) before invoking the result browser. In this case the images will appear
automatically as soon as you choose '@imports'.)
Ö To delete an external image, mark it in the main window and click with the right mouse button.
Choose 'Delete File' from the pop-up menu. Confirm the following prompt with 'Yes'.
CH. 3: RESULTS 23
Superficially, each model corresponds to an image, and each animation corresponds to a se-
quence.
However, while images and sequences can "only" be displayed and run, but not edited any further
(except for annotations), models are equipped with additional internal information within MAGMA-
composer. Hence, you can process all models with the View and 3-D functions that are explained
in Ch. 2.2.6, page 15 and Ch. 2.2.7, page 15. The same holds true for animations. This means
that – like in the postprocessor – you can e.g. freely choose the view angle and any zooming area
you like at your will. These options are also available in the MAGMAviewer.
If you prepare presentations in the postprocessor, please note that you must also have prepared
those simulation results for which you want to generate models and / or animations with the 'pre-
pare fast postprocessing' function. You must do this before generating the images with the help
of the 'Images' function. Please refer also to Ch. 1.3, page 7.
Fig. 3-3 shows a sample presentation tree, after all slides have been named and filled with con-
tents.
24 MAGMACOMPOSER 4.4 MANUAL
As you can see here and already in the pictures of the result browser, each kind of graphical object
has an individual symbol for distinguishing purposes (two image wildcards for images and models,
two stylized geometries for sequences and animations).
CH. 3: RESULTS 25
You can change presentations that are already filled with graphical contents as follows:
Ö Select the wanted slide in the presentation tree with the mouse.
Ö Open the result browser by double-clicking on the slide's contents. When the browser appears
(Î Fig. 3-1, page 20), the existing slide contents will be shown straightaway; the correspond-
ing file appears marked in the list.
Ö Click on the chapter's name in the presentation tree with the right mouse button. If you choose
'Rename chapter' from the pop-up menu, you can edit the name's text.
Ö Overwrite the existing name via the keyboard and press the RETURN key.
Ö As for slides, you just need to enter new text into the title area. The name in the presentation
tree will automatically be changed.
3.3 Annotations
You can add one or several annotations to an image that you have integrated into a slide. Anno-
tations are additional graphical elements, e.g. arrows or circles, that serve for highlighting certain
areas on a slide.
Proceed as follows:
Ö Click on the image to which you want add annotations with the right mouse button. A pop-up
menu appears.
26 MAGMACOMPOSER 4.4 MANUAL
Ö Choose 'Add Annotation'. The window 'Edit Annotation Properties' appears (Fig. 3-4).
Ö Click on the arrow button next to 'Shape' and select the shape of the annotation: arrow, ellipse
or line.
Ö Click on the button next to 'Color' and define the color of the annotation.
Ö Confirm with 'OK'. The window closes, and you are now in the input mode that allows you to
draw the annotation.
Ö Move the mouse with the left mouse button pressed in the wanted direction in order to draw
arrow, ellipse or line. As soon as you release the mouse button, the annotation appears in its
final position, and you leave the input mode.
Fig. 3-5 shows a sample slide that includes annotations. Proceed as follows to edit these:
CH. 3: RESULTS 27
Ö Select an existing annotation by clicking on it with the left mouse button. A rectangle with
changing grips appears, which encompasses the annotation.
¾ Edit: Click within the rectangle with the right mouse button. Choose 'Edit Annotation' from
the pop-up menu. The window 'Edit Annotation Properties' appears (Fig. 3-4). Change the
parameters and confirm with 'OK'.
¾ Change size: Lead the mouse on one of the eight changing grips. Change the size with
the left mouse button pressed.
28 MAGMACOMPOSER 4.4 MANUAL
¾ Delete: Click within the rectangle with the right mouse button and choose 'Delete Annota-
tion' from the pop-up menu (or select an annotation and press the DEL button).
If you want to delete all existing annotations, click outside the annotations with the right mouse
button and choose 'Delete All Annotations' from the pop-up menu. Confirm the following prompt
with 'Yes'.
If you have assigned a sequence or an animation to a slide and invoke this slide, a status bar will
appear below the first image in the main window like in Fig. 3-6.
Ö Click on the arrow on the left. The images of the animations are played, and the slider of the
status bar moves from the left to the right with those time steps that you have defined via the
input field on the right.
Ö If you want to repeat the animation in an endless loop, activate 'Loop' (Î tick in the checkbox).
If you want to deactivate the loop, click on the checkbox again.
Ö You can define the time steps between the images of the animation (in milliseconds) via the
small arrows or the input field on the right of the bar. If you choose 'Auto' (like in Fig. 3-6), the
animation runs as fast as it is allowed by the capacity of your computer.
Ö If you run an animation that is based on models ('Animation' entry in the result browser), you
can edit all images during the animation with the View and 3-D functions, e.g. rotate, pan and
zoom.
CH. 4: EXPORTING A PRESENTATION FOR MAGMAVIEWER 29
In order to be able to display a presentation that you have created with MAGMAcomposer in the
MAGMAviewer, you must export it beforehand from MAGMAcomposer. In doing so, the corre-
sponding MP file will be packed into an MPZ file under the same name (similar to a ZIP file). "ex-
ample.mp" e.g. will be "example.mpz". Proceed as follows:
Ö Click on 'Export' in the tool bar or choose 'File' Î 'Export'. The first window of the 'MAGMA-
composer Export Wizard' appears. You will carry out the export with the help of this assistant.
Ö Confirm you input with 'Next' each. Choose 'Finish' in the last window of the wizard.
To be able to view an exported presentation in MAGMAviewer, you must import it with the 'Import'
function there. Details are supplied in the MAGMAviewer 4.4 Manual.
In the following you find an image sequence that shows all windows of the wizard with some ex-
planations.
30 MAGMACOMPOSER 4.4 MANUAL
Ö Choose the target directory for the MPZ file (Fig. 4-2). If you want to store the presentation in
another directory than the one given under 'Destination Folder', choose a different path via
'Browse' (or enter it via the keyboard in the input field).
32 MAGMACOMPOSER 4.4 MANUAL
Ö A short summary appears that includes the directory and the file name (Fig. 4-3). If the name
of the presentation to be exported already exists in the chosen directory, the following warning
message appears (Fig. 4-4):
Ö If you confirm with 'Yes', the existing MPZ file will be overwritten. Only then, 'Next' in Fig. 4-3
is active, and you can proceed.
CH. 4: EXPORTING A PRESENTATION FOR MAGMAVIEWER 33
Ö After you have clicked on 'Next' in Fig. 4-3, the program checks all necessary data and files
and converts all images into the MPC format (Fig. 4-5).
34 MAGMACOMPOSER 4.4 MANUAL
Ö After you have clicked on 'Next' in Fig. 4-5, the MPZ file will be created. This may take several
minutes. The progress is shown via a status bar. When the bar has reached 100% and the
MPZ file has been created completely, the 'Next' button is active like in Fig. 4-6, and you can
proceed.
CH. 4: EXPORTING A PRESENTATION FOR MAGMAVIEWER 35
Ö Choose 'Finish' in the last window (Fig. 4-7) to finish the export of the presentation.
