Abstract

The RD-3 is the third well drilled to test the reservoir development in Kangean Production Sharing Contract
block, East Java Sea back arc basin, Indonesia. RD-3 well of Eocene Ngimbang Carbonate buildup was
penetrated in the western portion of the RD block.
The 474 feet of continuous core was taken in a 300 deviated well over 7120 to 7594 feet of RD-3 well. The
cores were polished for close up core photography and for direct lithofacies description under a microscope.
The objectives of this study are to interpretation of the diagenetic process, development of fractures. Diagenetic
process which contribute the porosity and permeability development of matrix and fracture/ stylolite properties
in RD-3.
Combined data set analysis support the interpretation that diagenetic processes are divided into two: deep
marine platform diagenesis and shallow marine platform diagenesis. The deep marine diagenesis was not
affected by sub aerial exposure and meteoric diagenesis thus two zones of diagenesis are distinguished: near sea
floor and burial diagenesis. The shallow marine platform is affected by several stages of diagenesis, such as
marine diagenesis, meteoric sub aerial exposure, and burial diagenesis.
After the burial to as much as 12,000 feet, the Ngimbang carbonate formation was uplifted by inversion to its
present burial depth of 7,000 feet. The uplifted is interpreted as an important stage for development of reservoir
fracture porosity. The average matrix porosity and permeability are low, 1.8% and 0.1 md. The fracture
secondary porosity and stylolites did contribute to RD.-3 reservoir development, but only in the shallow
platform sequence. The upper sequence did not develop fracture porosity because of their high detrital clay
content. Unfortunately, the shallow platform sequence did not develop significant matrix porosity, and hence
has poor overall reservoir potential.
