Temporary Compression of Pile and Soil (Cp + Cq)

The value of temporary compression of pile and soil, Cp+Cq, depends on the embedded pile
length (E.L.) the maximum driving stress and the nature of resistance to driving. The ratio
Cp+Cq/E.L. is a function of the following factors:

(i) The maximum driving stress of the pile (the higher the driving stress, the larger the
ratio Cp+Cq/E.L).

(ii) The force distribution along the pile shaft and the toe (Cp+Cq/E.L. is high for end
bearing piles and low for friction piles).

In assessing a suitable hammer weight and preliminary final set table proposed by a
contractor, an appropriate estimate of the Cp+Cq value should be used. For 305x305x180
kg/m steel H-piles subject to normal driving stress (i.e. 280 ~ 350 MPa) during the
measurements of final set, Cp+Cq/E.L. would vary from about 1.0 to 1.6 mm/m as the nature
of resistance changes from friction to end-bearing (see Figure B1).
