SPRING HANGER DETERMINATION

1. PURPOSE
The purpose of this document is to explain and provide guide lines for the
determination of spring hangers according to pipe stress calculation reports and data
sheets SP1383 01 and 02.
NOTE : Document is illustrated with parts of supplier catalogue . Usage of Vendor
catalogue is only to clarify the text and examples and doesn’t intended to
recommendation, selection of preferable Vendor.

2. REFERENCE DOCUMENTS
This document may be used with :
- 00000–00-NC-1370-XXX : Spring Support data sheet report on pipe stress
calculation notes
- GE-353-3-11 : Guide document for spring hangers and tie-rods hangers data

3. VARIABLE SPRING SUPPORTS

ƒ Reference documents used are from Lisega and PSS catalogues. However
selection procedure will be applied similary for other suppliers

3.1 VARIABLE SPRING HANGER RANGE USING.

ƒ Variable springs are generally used for travel variations up to 30/40mm but in
all cases it is the Calculation Note which define the type of spring to be
used ( Variable or Constant spring ) according to the application and
equipment to be protected.
ƒ As example, it may be possible to have a variable spring with a displacement
of 30 mm on a simple line on a pipe rack, but it will not be possible to have a
variable spring with 10mm on a turbin or pump due to supplier or codes
admissible loads on these machines.
ƒ When used in such applications load variations shall be limited to 5-10%
maximum.
ƒ NOTE that a VARIABLE SPRING have an influence on the WEIGHT
LOADS but have no influence on THERMAL LOADS .

3.2 SELECTION OF A VARIABLE SPRING ACCORDING TO PIPE STRESS

CALCULATION REPORT SPRING DATA SHEET.

3.2.1 VERTICAL DISPLACEMENT OF VARIABLE SPRING:

The Spring travel table as those of ATTACHMENT 1 don’t give the displacement of the
spring in relation with the calculation note.

SPRING HANGER DETERMINATION

A/ DOWNSTAIR DISPLACEMENT
At Node N° 1530 :
ƒ SHOP CALIBRATION LOAD = 2500 N = 2,5 kN
ƒ Travel = -10 mm

In table of Nominal load (N) find Size near this load: we find SIZE 7
(ATTACHMENT 1).

Consider a Spring Rate of 38.2 N/mm (if not imposed) for a Fig 82 (working
range 0 to 30mm)

We will have a load variation of:

38.2 x 10mm = 382 N

The OPERATING LOAD will be:

2500 N + 382 N = 2882 N

CONCLUSION :

THE SIZE IS NOT VALID as the operating load is out of spring range (the
admissible working range is the limit between the 2 columns of table at left)

The size to be selected is Size 8:

The Spring Rate is: 52.6 N/mm (with the same FIG 82)

The Load variation is: Spring rate x movement

52.6 x 10 = 526 N

The OPERATING LOAD will be:

2500 N + 526 N = 3026 N.

CONCLUSION:

The SIZE is valid but we have to check the load variation.

But the VARIATION LOAD between the OPERATING and SHOP

CALIBRATION LOAD is usually limited to 25% of operating load:

[Movement x Spring rate / Operating load] x 100 =

[10 x 52.6 / 3026] x 100 = 17.38 % of load variation

THE SIZE OF SPRING AND RATE ARE ACCEPTABLE

B / UPSIDE DISPLACEMENT

ƒ OPERATING LOAD = 4500 N

ƒ Travel = + 25 mm

In table of Nominal load (N) find Size near this load: we find SIZE 9
(ATTACHMENT 1)

Consider a Spring Rate of 71.0 N/mm (if not imposed) for a Fig 82 (working
range 0 to 30mm)

We will have a load variation of:

71.0 x 25mm = 1775 N

The CALIBRATION LOAD will be:

4500 N + 1775 N = 6265 N

CONCLUSION :

THE SPRING RATE IS NOT VALID as the calibration load is out of spring
range of Size 9.

We select Size 10:

The Spring Rate is: 90.4 N/mm (with the same FIG 82)

The Load variation is: Spring rate x movement

90.4 x 25 = 2260 N

The OPERATING LOAD will be:

4500 N + 2260 N = 6760 N.

CONCLUSION:

The SIZE is at the limit of spring working range (no security at field in case of
overload adjustment and we have to check the Variation Load %.

[Movement x Spring rate / Operating load] x 100 =

[25 x 90.4 / 4500] x 100 = 33.4 % of load variation

THE SPRING RATE IS NOT VALID

ƒ Test with Size 10 and Spring rate of 22.6

ƒ The Shop calibration will be : 4500 N + (25 x 22.6 ) = 5065 N
ƒ Load variation : [565 / 4500] x 100 = 12.55 %
THE SPRING RATE IS ACCEPTABLE

3.2.3 REMARKS:

ƒ To simplify and avoid unacceptable data sheets :

ƒ From OPERATING load with + (positive) displacement :
CALIBRATION load > OPERATING load

ƒ From OPERATING load with – (negative) displacement :

CALIBRATION load < OPERATING load
ƒ Note that when spring rate decrease, the spring hanger house requires more
place to be installed: so check the possibility of installation.
ƒ Between 2 choices of Size take the first possible Size (ATTACHMENT 4A/4B):
ƒ Lower price
ƒ Stronger spring rate.
ƒ It is advised to use midrange Springs from the catalogue.

4. CONSTANT SPRING HANGER

4.1 CONSTANT SPRING SYSTEM USING

ƒ When vertical movements are (generally) over 35 to 40 mm, or for sensitive

equipment (e.g: turbines, compressors,..) the load variation may not be admissible.
ƒ CONSTANT SPRINGS are to be identified by stress analysis group. .
ƒ As designated, this spring system has no load variation on its travel range.
The determination of the constant spring is only based on the OPERATING (or
CALIBRATING as the same) load and the vertical movement.

4.2 SYSTEMS OF CONSTANT SPRINGS

There are 2 systems:
ƒ Cantilever system

ƒ Lisega system
ƒ Note : The Lisega system is now in public ownership and may be fabricated by
other suppliers .

♦ System will be defined according to type of units and technical data requirements .
♦ The 2 systems may not be always interchangeables due to conception and
dimensions so as civil work structures and piping design may be defined before the
designation of supplier, support group shall ask to responsible what is the system as
base of design.

4.3 DETERMINATION OF CONSTANT SPRING

ATTACHMENT 2A and 2B give LISEGA TABLES to define the choice of constant
spring serial according to loads and displacements.
ATTACHMENT 3 gives PSS table to define the same choice.
It shall be provided an additional travel reserve of 20% (of theoretical travel) and at
least 15 mm and ~15% for load reserve.

♦ EXAMPLE OF DETERMINATION

ƒ INFORMATIONS:
ƒ OPERATING LOAD : 49000 N
ƒ THEORETICAL TRAVEL : + 190mm

A/ PER PSS CATALOGUE

-DEFINE TRAVEL WITH SECURITY RANGE:
190 x 20% = 38 mm so total travel to consider is Tt = 228mm
Which give the most close up near in TABLE of ATTACHMENT 3 = 229 mm

TYPE 1183
On same Attachment.
The travel and load are included in the pyramid.

SECURITY RANGES:
To confirm selection use ATTACHMENT 2A:
- For a TYPE 1183 the load close up 49000N is 50660N (50.66 kN) and maximum
travel 270 mm (for a 300mm maxi in this range).
- Maximum load is 56000 N with a travel of 240 mm: we are in the security ranges
in travel and loads.
