ASAQ (ANSWERS TO SELF ASSESMENT EXAMINATION)-Module 1

1. The homogeneous bar shown in the figure is supported by a smooth pin at C and a
cable that runs from A to B around the smooth peg at D. Find the stress in the cable if its
diameter is 0.6 inch and the bar weighs 6000 lb.

Solution:
Draw free body diagram,

ΣMC=0
3
5𝑇 + 10 ( ) 𝑇 − 5(6000) = 0
√34
T=2957.13lb

T=σA
2957.13=σ[1/4π(0.62)]
σ=10458.72 psi
2. Compute the shearing stress in the pin at B for the member supported as shown in the
figure. The pin diameter is 20 mm.

From the FBD:

ΣMC=0
0.25RBV=0.25(40sin35∘)+0.2(40cos35∘)
RBV=49.156kN

ΣFH=0
RBH=40cos35∘
RBH=32.766kN

RB2=RBH2+RBV2
RB2=32.7662+49.1562
RB=59.076kN → shear force of pin at B

VB=τBA → double shear

59.076(1000)=τB{2[1/4π(202)]}
τB=94.02 MPa
3. The strength of longitudinal joint in the figure below is 33 kips/ft, whereas for the
girth is 16 kips/ft. Calculate the maximum diameter of the cylinder tank if the internal
pressure is 150 psi.

For Girth joint:

Consider 1 ft length
F=2T
pD=2σtt
σt=pD/2t
33000t=21600D/2t
D=3.06ft=36.67in.

For Longitudinal joint:

F=P
p(1/4πD2)=σl(πDt)
σl=pD/4t
16000t=21600D/4t
D=2.96ft=35.56in.

Use the smaller diameter, D=35.56in.
