Subject: Science Experiment Separa=ng Mixture Teacher: Ms. Measury

Separa&ng Mixture
Objective:

Students will be able to develop and explain a particle-level model to describe their
observations of water dissolving salt, the water evaporating, and the salt crystals re-forming.

Key Concepts:

• Dissolving a solid in a liquid depends on the interactions and attractions between the
molecules of the liquid (solvent) and the particles of the solid (solute).

• Separating two substances that have been mixed together homogenously by evaporation.

• Evaporation happens when water molecules move fast enough to break away from a
solution and move into the air.

• When a solution evaporates, the water goes into the air but the solid is left behind.

Material:

• Bowl(small or medium size)

• Wooden stick
• Salt
• Water
• Worksheets

Instruction:

1. Fill your bowl almost half with water.

2. Using your spoon, put enough salt on the bowl of water and stir until the salt dissolve
totally in water.
3. Add more salt and stir again until the water in your bowl cannot dissolve the salt at
all.
4. Take a picture of your solution.
5. Put the solution in a place in your house where the sun shines longer during the day.
Important reminders: if you put the solution outside your house make sure to transfer
it inside during night time. Put it in a safe place where your pet or little brothers/
sisters can’t touch it.

6. Record your data on the table provided for you below.

Salt Solu&on Data Record/ Pictures/Observa&on

First Day
At the beginning of the experiment The salt is completely dissolved and the
water colour stays the same.
ARer 5 hours under the sun The water decreases a liTle but I s=ll can’t
see the salt.
At night =me I can see the salt now but only a liTle of
them. The water s=ll stays the same like the
last =me I checked.
Second Day
The next morning The salt is only a liTle and the water
decreases a liTle bit more.
ARer 5 hours under the sun The water evaporates more (it decreases)
and the salt shows a lot more.
At Night Time The water isn’t completely gone but it
decreases a lot and I can see the salt beTer
now.

7. Answer the following ques&on below

a. What happens with the salt when you mix it with water? It dissolves.

b. Did the color of the water stay the same or changes when you dissolve salt in the
water? It stays the same.

c. How many teaspoons of salt you mixed in the water before it can’t dissolve the salt
anymore? 2 spoons of salt.

d. Explain why the mixture is called homogenous mixture? Because the mixture can’t
be separated by hands and when we mix it, the salt became invisible.
e. What do you think will happen to the water overnight? The amount of the water will
decrease since it evaporated.

f. What do you think will happen to the salt in the water? The salt will be separated
from the water because the water has evaporated.

g. What do you observe about the salt solution you left out overnight? The water
decreases and I can see the salt.

Conclusion:

If we leave the bowl (filled with salt and water) under the sun the whole day, the
heat from the Sun would cause the water in the bowl to evaporate and thus separate
the water from the salt.
