Background
Was born on November 9, 1827
Teodora Morales Alonzo Realonda de Rizal y Quintos
Was born in Meisik, Tondo, Manila
2nd child of Lorenzo Alonso and Brijida de Quintos
Formal education at the Colegio de Santa Rosa in Manila. She
was well-educated and highly cultured.
Her husband was Francisco Mercado of Biñan, Laguna in 1848.
They settled in Calamba, Laguna and to them were born eleven
children including Rizal.

Doña Teodora was imprisoned together with his brother,
Jose Alberto.
This was because of the allegation of
Teodora Formoso
for accusing them of poisoning her.

Formoso was aided by a Spanish lieutenant guardia civil

in order to file a case against Alberto and Lolay.

Teodora walked 50 kilometers from

Santa Cruz, Laguna to Calamba.

01 In the 1880s, she was again arrested for allegedly refusing to use her Spanish name Rizal; instead
of "Realonda de Rizal" she chose the name "Teodora Alonso".

02 The Spaniards forced her to walk 90 kilometers from Manila to Santa Cruz, Laguna.

03 Teodora endured this cruelty without complain or any protest.

03 Four days later, she arrived at court in Santa Cruz, and then freed by the Laguna Governor.
 Impact of this Event to her Family
The injustice she suffered caused the beacons of fate to her family especially to her youngest son, Jose
Rizal, whose silent vow of nationalism was unbreakable and inexorable in his forward march to the final
conclusion of death and heroism.

The grim fact of colonization dawned on Jose Rizal and imprinted on him that true people would struggle
for honesty and fairness.

Anything less than that is unreal and cowardly.
