anybody from voting.

2. I think that local government officials didn’t intercede because they were in on it as well. At
least half of the government (Democrats) was either actively participating or not helping to stop
the violence.

3.This example suggests that African Americans had only a few more rights than they did when
they were slaves in the postbellum South. They were emancipated but nowhere near free.
