POTATO

EXPERIMENT
Carlo D, Benitez Jr.
STEM 11-A
-OSMOSIS-
ACTIVITY
Osmosis

◦Osmosis is a process in which water passes

across the cell membrane depending on the
solute concentration inside and outside the
cell.
THINGS YOU’LL
NEED
◦6 potato strips
◦3 container/beaker of
water
◦Salt
Procedure
◦ 1. You will be observing potato strips submerged to distilled water with different
concentration of salt.
◦ 2. Cut 6 potato strips 4cm in length. Measure 150ml of distilled water and pour it
to the 3 beakers or containers.
◦ 3. Weigh 20g ang 5g of salt and put it in the first and second beaker. Add 2 potato
strips in the 3 beaker.
◦ 4. Observe. Record the wight and size of potato strips in grams after 6 hrs.

Guide Question:
◦ 1. Observe what happen to the potato strips in the 3 setups. In term of weight and size?
◦ The size and weight of the potato strips change or react to the amount of the salt in the
container that causes it to change the length and weight of the potato strips.
◦ 2. Is there any changes happen to the potato strips, what would be the reason? Explain.
◦ In osmosis, water moves from areas of low salt concentrations to areas of high salt
concentrations. Once you add salt to the water, you create a higher salt concentration which
made the salt water potato softer than the regular one.
◦ 3. Give your conclusion about the activity.
◦ The more salt you add to the water with the potato strips it will also make big changes to the
potato like making it more softer than the usual.
