Military Science (MS) 2 / NSTPR02 Online Learning Proposal for Term 3 AY2019-2020

Rationale

The NSTPRO2 or Military Science (MS) 2 course provides the students with a specialized Naval ROTC subjects integrating the
Lasallian Core Values of faith, zeal for service and communion in mission to prepare them to become competent enlisted Lasallian
Naval Reservists. Lectures and practical exercises  are conducted within the duration of the  course that includes include the
following topic Naval Organization, Seamanship, Engineering, and Damage Control, Ordinance and Gunnery, Naval Operations,
Marine Operations, Shipboard Familiarization and Drills and ceremonies.
 
NSTP courses are known for its physical activities and practical exercises to deepen the understanding of the students in the course
but in time of the COVID-19, the NSTP courses particularly the Reserve Officers’ Training Corps (ROTC) is facing challenges in
conducting its courses given the policies that limit face to face sessions, mass formation, and observing physical distancing.

The NSTP and Formation Office through the 247th Naval ROTC Unit of De La Salle University-Manila aims to develop new
mechanisms that will adapt to the new environment and ensures that the goal of the courses will be achieved through the new
method of learning. 

Proposed Teaching Method

Blended Learning

Given the current situation the University will conduct classes in Term 3 AY 2019-2020 using Blended Learning a mode of learning.
Blended learning as define by the Oxford Dictionary is “a style of education in which students learn via electronic and online media as
well as traditional face-to-face teaching”.

To adapt to the new set up, the University mandates that the NSTPR02/MS2 course will be delivered in full online as it mode of
learning. To ensure that the learning and formation process of the student is continued, the NSTPR02/MS2 wil be implemented using
the Synchronous and Asycnhronous Learning through the use of CANVAS (Animospace). The CANVAS (Animospace) is the
Lasallian Learning Management System of the De La Salle University that enables the faculty to create an integrated learning space
and communicate with their students through different online platforms.

All Training staff are required to have a DLSU email account to access the Animospace. Moreover, Training Staff are required to
attend trainings on Animospace since all online classes are required to conduct using the said Learning Management System.

Definition

Blended Learning - Oxford Dictionary Definition Of Blended Learning: a style of education in which students learn via electronic and
online media as well as traditional face-to-face teaching.

Synchronous Learning - Synchronous learning involves online studies that are conducted with the aid of chat rooms. This kind of
learning can only happen online. Online communication helps your learners stay in touch with their teacher and fellow students. It’s
called synchronous learning because the system allows students to ask their teacher or fellow students questions instantly through

Asynchronous Learning - This method can be carried out online and offline. Asynchronous learning involves coursework delivered
by web, email, and message boards that are posted in online forums. Students do not have access to instant messaging through this
online forum. A benefit of asynchronous learning is that you’re able to be self-paced. (definition from easylms.com)

 Last Day of Submission of Grades – October 6, 2020
 Grade Consultation – October 7, 2020

Training Staff
1. Facilitate Synchronous and Asynchronous sessions
2. Management of NSTPR02 course in Animospace.
3. Creation of Program of Instruction and Instructional materials.
4. Management of NSTPR02 students and monitor the progress of each students.
5. Participation in all trainings on Animospace and other capacity building trainings.

NSTPR02 Students
1. Participate in Synchronous and Asynchronous sessions
2. Submit all NSTPR02 requirements

Reservist Instructors
1. Provide support to training staff in moderating NSTPR02 classes in Animospace.
2. Provide assistance in creating instructional materials.

NSTP and Formation Office


1. Facilitate Animospace and other capacity building training for the Training Staff.
2. Provide DLSU Accounts to all the Training Staff
3. Provide Assistance in the creation of POI and instructional materials
4. Provide assistance as moderator for NSTPR02 online classes.
5. Secure contract and other documents of the Training staff and facilitate the release of the honorarium of the Training Staff
and Reservist Instructors.

Things to do:

1. Updating of POI and Master Training Schedule for online classes.


2. Creation of instructional materials for synchronous and asynchronous learning.
3. Creation of DLSU account for all training staff to access the Animospace

4. Participation in all training on online classes of all training staff.
5. Updating of Roles and Responsibilities of the Training Staff and Reservist Instructors.
