Tatiana Cambi

3rd Grade/ Math

Common Core Standards:

Solve word problems by adding and subtracting within 1,000, dollars with dollars and cents with cents (not
using dollars and cents simultaneously) using the $ and ₵ symbol appropriately (not including decimal
notation).

Lesson Summary:

Students will be able to identify coin/money values and write amounts of money.

Estimated Duration:

The estimated duration for this lesson will most likely be 150 minutes. I would love to break this up to 4
days which is 35 min. everyday so they are not rushed to learn everything and can have more practice.

Commentary:
I plan on playing some games such as “shopping” I feel like if students can play while learning they would
have a better understanding and they won’t get bored

Instructional Procedures

Day 1:
Small group activity
I will read the poem called “Smart” by Shel Silverstein from where the sidewalk Ends. I will then ask if
anybody can count money really well, and how many think they can improvise with some practice. I will
then show the students a penny, a nickel, a dime, a quarter, $1 bill, $5 bill, $10 bill, and a $20 bill. I will pick
up some coins and bills and ask them how much they think it is worth and make them repeat which coin Is
what and what bill is what.

Day 2:

I will split the kids into groups of 3. I will give them fake dollar bills and coins and keep it in a plastic bag. I
will continue with questions and choose volunteers and make them demonstrate/explain how they got their
answer.

Day 3:
I will make a list of some questions for the students to answer. (If I bought 4 apples and 1 Banana, how
much will that cost?) I will give students a $20 spending limit and ask them to write their “wish list”.
Students should correctly fill out the order form and correctly add the total. They can also switch with a
friend and make sure they got the correct answers with a calculator. I will also have them create their own
word problem and switch with a friend and check answers again.

Day4:
I will give students a $50 spending limit. I will have the class decorated as a grocery store and they will be
able to shop. I will be the cashier and make sure they are not passing their spending limit. I will also be
questioning them in small groups (how much is $1 bill, 3 dimes plus 2 nickels worth?)

Pre-Assessment:
I will ask questions such as, you want to buy a water for $.50.  You have 1 quarter, 1 dime, 3 nickels and 5
pennies.  Do you have enough?  (Yes, $0.55) You want to buy a soda for $0.75 and a candy bar for
$0.50.  You have 2 quarters, 4 dimes, 2 nickels and 2 pennies.  Do you have enough? (Yes, $1.02) I will the
discuss the importance of knowing money values referring back to the poem. I will then have them
determine How many pennies equal one nickel, one dime, one quarter, and one dollar. I will do the same for
the other coins.

Scoring Guidelines:
I will listen to student’s responses during whole- group questioning, I will also make them write answers on
a piece of paper and check the student responses.

Post-Assessment:

I would like for them to identify every coin ad dollar bill. Also be able to identify what each of coin ad bills
are worth. Show me the amount I write on the board with fake money.

Scoring Guidelines:

Were they able to identify every coin and dollar bill? 3pts
Do they know how much each coin or bill is worth? 3pts
Can they show me what a specific amount is? ($1.67) 4pts

Differentiated Instructional Support

Describe how instruction can be differentiated (changed or altered) to meet the needs of gifted or accelerated
students: I would work with them during lunch time or work one on one while other students are doing
worksheets.
Discuss additional activities you could do to meet the needs of students who might be struggling with the
material: I would also have them get on the computers to practice some online learning. Also just keep
playing with the fake money and having them practice.
