Glossary I (Part 1). -Lactams: Class and Subclass Designations and Generic Name
242

M100, 28th ed.

In the late 1990s, several authorities were consulted to construct the glossary. The intention was to include all agents that appeared in M100, along
with related agents available for human use. Since that time, agents have been added to the glossary as they were introduced to CLSI, and they do not
need to be FDA cleared to be included. It cannot be assumed that the list is exhaustive, and it should be noted that some agents are no longer available
for human use.

Footnotes

a. Hydrolyzed by staphylococcal penicillinase.

b. Not hydrolyzed by staphylococcal penicillinase.

c. Cephalosporins I, II, III, and IV are sometimes referred to as first-, second-, third-, and fourth-generation cephalosporins, respectively. Cephalosporins III and IV
are also referred to as “extended-spectrum cephalosporins.” This does not imply activity against extended-spectrum -lactamase–producing gram-negative
bacteria.
