Introductory Message

For the teacher:

Welcome to the SHS CREATIVE WRITING MODULE!
This module was collaboratively designed, developed and reviewed
by educators from public institutions in Department of Education Region V
(Bicol) to assist you, the teacher in helping the learners meet the standards
set by the K to 12 Curriculum while overcoming their personal, social, and
economic constraints in schooling.
This learning resource hopes to engage the learners into guided and
independent learning activities at their own pace and time. Furthermore, this
also aims to help learners acquire the needed 21st century skills while taking
into consideration their needs and circumstances.
As a teacher, you are expected to orient the learners on how to use
this module. You also need to keep track of the learners' progress while
allowing them to manage their own learning. Furthermore, you are expected
to encourage and assist the learners as they do the tasks included in the
module.

For the learner:

Welcome to the SHS CREATIVE WRITING MODULE!
This module was designed to provide you with fun and meaningful
opportunities for guided and independent learning at your own pace and
time. You will be enabled to process the contents of the learning resource
while being an active learner and at the same time an adventurer. Diego
your learning companion is with you as you embark in this learning journey.
You will transport in the different realms to learn and perform noteworthy
tasks.
If you encounter any difficulty in answering the tasks in this module, do
not hesitate to consult your teacher. Always bear in mind that you are not
alone.
We hope that through this material, you will experience meaningful
learning and gain a deep understanding of the relevant competencies.
More so, use your notebook or a separate sheet of paper in noting significant
details and pieces of information in the different modules and even in
accomplishing the tasks given to you. You can do it!

At last, after having triumphed all the challenges of the different
kingdoms, you are now here in the Kingdom of All Kingdoms – Creativa!
You made it here because you surpassed modules 1 to 5 which earned
you all the elemental crystals and magical jar. You must save this place from
dying and the crystals that we collected will help us fulfill this mission. To unify
all the powers of the crystals through the magical jar, you are expected to
describe specific experiences using figures of speech.

Reaching this kingdom is never easy. You are now seeing the place because
of its queen cursed by the man’s continued search for destruction.
You need to save the place before it’s too late. Diego, is still here to
help you. All the odds in your favor, I claim!
As a review also of our previous lesson, let us ace this word of the day
using these 4 PICS-1 WORD puzzles. Go and ace it!

A ___ ___ ___ ___ ___ ___ ___

Great! That is the correct answer! What do you remember about this
word?

You have done a great job unlocking the first word. Try your luck in
answering the next activity. Below are words with jumbled letters. With your
wit and speed, you can certainly uncover the magical words. Let us recall
the seven (7) remaining figures of speech that we learned from the previous
module.

1. PNIEROSCIAOITN 2. SIIMLE
3. HBPYROELE 4. MTEPAOHR

1
5. OYOOMRXN 6. IONRY
7. PRAAODX

With these figures you are sure winners but it takes courage of the heart
for a warrior to truly succeed. Learn the importance of these figures to avoid
falling from the pit of dangers.

The effective use of figures of speech brings to life what would have
been mere words, phrases and sentences. They express the author's intent
and take the reader on a journey through what he or she experienced or
imagined or witnessed at a specific period or periods in time.

Among many other purposes, figures of speech enable us to look at

some object, feeling, or event in a new way or to express feelings we cannot
easily put into words. Here is Keats using figures of speech to share with us the
awe and wonder he feels when looking at an urn that is perhaps thousands
of years old but intact and still beautiful:

Thou still unravished bride of quietness,

Thou foster-child of Silence and slow Time,
Sylvan historian, who canst thus express,
A flowery tale more sweetly than our rhyme

Here Keats marshals personification and metaphor, giving the urn

several different roles because one does not quite say all he feels.

Our experiences are so rich that they need to be described in such a

beautiful language. Our experiences make us stand to who we really are
because they mirror us. With figurative language, we express our aspirations
and emotions in the most colorful way without being too literal.

Of course, figures of speech occur in everyday language—some enter

into common parlance and become cliches—but language belongs to us all
and people invent new figures of speech all the time or find new ways to
dress up the cliches. Remember, language works wonders and is fun to learn.

2
Practice Task 1: Full power is never achieved without the elemental jar. Power
up by reading the dialogue below and by answering the questions that
follow. Write your answers in your notebook.

Myra: Hello Sid! You look dashing today, so Adonis!

Sid: Wow. Thank you, Myra. You know what? Just to be able
to wear this suit, I exercised a million times.
Myra: Really? I thought the suit tailored itself just to fit your
body. (Laughs)
Sid: Haha! I guess we better go now. The party’s going to
start in a few minutes.
Myra: Okay. Sometimes the faster we move the slower they
start.
Sid: Hahaha. So poetic.

Guide Questions:

1. Where are the two characters in the dialogue going/heading to?

_____________

2. Which lines in the dialogue used figures of speech? Can you identify
at least three? I am challenging you to also provide their meanings. Let the
table below help you in organizing your answers.

3. The dialogue used some figures of speech. Now, what do think will
happen if the conversation will be taken literally by the reader or listener?

4. Now, how important is using figures of speech to communication?

You did a great job in explaining the meanings of the figures of speech in the
dialogue. Now, be ready to embrace another challenge in the succeeding
tasks.

Practice Task 2: In this task, you are given sentences using figurative
language. Notice the words set in bold type and think about their meaning.
Then, below each item, write a sentence stating the over-all meaning of the
sentence.

1. I was clearly confused of the message she wanted to tell us. The
world is never as young as it was before so we better take actions to
save it.
_______________________________________________________________
2. The sun smiled at us so we went on a picnic.
________________________________________________________________
3. Stay away from her. She was a wildfire of rage.
________________________________________________________________
4. I didn’t expect him to be as tall as a giraffe.
________________________________________________________________
5. I know one thing that is I know nothing—Socrates
________________________________________________________________

That was a tough one, but you survived! Keep it up and as you are now
nearing the end of the challenges, you can already use the power of the
crystals. Ace that with magic!

Friendship is a but a heart completed to love. A love so ready to

conquer the unimaginable and the seemingly unfathomable.

4
Read and understand the poetry below. Bring out the magic of
friendship as you get immersed in each line and stanza. After reflecting on its
message, recall some the significant experiences you had with your friend(s).
Take time to share those memories with them. Then, write at least three (3) of
your unforgettable/memorable experiences with them that you think is very
much related to the poem’s message.

My Friend
by Ronners Chu

Your eyes filled with emotion

your smile sparkles like new fallen snow Wrapped in your arms I find warmth
I only wish that I knew how I feel so safe within your grip
to let my true feelings for you show. one thing’s for sure your friendship’s
made these four years quite a trip.
Beneath your tough appearance
lies a heart of solid gold Even though those precious years
I don’t want to give up our friendship came to a sad and tearful end
no matter what I’ve been told. I hope you know no matter what
you’ll always be my friend.
Your kind soul and tender spirit
can brighten anyone’s lousy day
your gentle touch and soothing voice
make all my fears just melt away.
Your improvement is impressive. Congratulations for you have
successfully completed the module. Indeed, in your hand lies the power of
the crystals to save the land of Creativa.

“ By the power of all crystals, I summon all the mighty elements to break
the curse of this Kingdom and let it be no more to infinity and beyond. Save
this dying queen and wake her up from this infernal damnation and
malevolence!”

5
Write a creative entry, either a poem or an essay, about your braving
personal challenges in life. How do you overcome them? What has/have
been developed in you for having survived these personal challenges?

Make your language descriptive using any of the figures of speech

that you have learned. Make your own catchy title. Use a short-sized bond
paper and make it visually creative as well. This will be part of your portfolio.
Happy writing!

To remember our lesson better, let us wrap things up. Our experiences
are so rich that they need to be described in such a beautiful language.
They make us stand to who we really are because they mirror us. With
figurative language, we express our aspirations and emotions in the most
colorful way without being too literal.

Figures of speech are the palette from which the author works, and he
or she might choose to enhance his or her creation by applying the
appropriate "colors" as it were, in his or her writing. A dab of metaphor here,
a stroke of personification there, what about a dramatic slash
of simile or onomatopoeia there?

The lack of understanding and using figures of speech leaves the user
of the English language at sea, as to the real meaning of what is being said
or written. The unseasoned learner may confuse the figurative meaning with
its literal connotation. This may lead to a sense of frustration and lack of self
confidence in the learner towards the English language.

Remember, language works wonders.

6
Congratulations! Your bravery, wit and heart saved the kingdom from
the doom of death. I hope you learned and had fun. Always remember that
no insurmountable challenge can put us down. Keep the fire within your
heart ever-burning for that is the most powerful weapon.

Light breaks into the kingdom, hence returning its life. The queen has
been awakened and the synergy of life and magic prevails and continues.

As her gesture of gratitude, she asks one of her royal soldiers to give
you an inexplicable sacred cake that will grant you any wish you long
desired. Desiring much to eat it, you and Diego take a small bite but it is late
that the queen realized that it is poetrious, a delicacy of Poetria not the cake
that grants wishes.

A strong gust of wind edges you and Diego and draws you swiftly to
the ground. Surprised in just a fracture of a second, you’ve been turned
smaller than ant and light as a feather and have been taken into a new
world where new adventures await---Land of Poetria.
