Built on the experience gained from thousands of installations world-

wide, the new ALIMAK SE-Ex is designed to deliver on your access
requirements and heavy transport needs in hazardous environments.
The ALIMAK SE-Ex sets a new benchmark for the safer, efficient vertical
transportation of personnel and material on derricks, hull columns,
platform modules, oil refineries, LNG terminals, chemical plants and
other similar industrial environments.

components built to the same quality
standards as the ALIMAK SE range, but
re-engineered to meet the uniquely challenging demands
of the offshore and petrochemical industries. The ALIMAK
SE-Ex range enables workers and materials to be trans-
ported safely in potentially hazardous areas.
A new standardized concept
The new ALIMAK SE-Ex lift range is based on a modular
design enabling specific customer requirements to be met
by using proven standard components. The system pro-
vides an infinitely variable range of lifting heights, car
sizes and capacities capable of meeting the most stringent
specifications.
The ALIMAK SE-Ex range offers lifting capacities of
between 400 and 1,600 kg and has direct-on-line motor
control. The SE-Ex range is available in 15 car sizes ranging
between 0.91 x 1.30 m and 1.56 x 2.21 m. It travels at speeds
of 0.4–0.6 m/s. The new advanced Alimak Lift Control
system ALC-II ensures both efficiency and ease of use.
We have built up over 30 years’ experience in explosion-
protected applications since delivering our first lift to
Kuwait National Petroleum C.O. in 1975. That lift reached
a 40 m lifting height, operating in hazardous area zone 2
environments. Manufacturing construction hoists since
1948, Alimak engineers pioneered rack and pinion drive
technology in 1962. The outstanding quality and design of
our products is demonstrated by the fact many of our lifts
remain in operation after 25 years of service.
Petrochemical industry
Our extensive expertise in providing explosion protected
lifts delivers real benefits to the petrochemical industry,
including improved productivity in hazardous areas such
as oil refineries, chemical plants and at LNG terminals.
Offshore industry
We delivered the first Alimak lift unit to the offshore
industry in 1974 for installation on an Aker H-3 design
semi-submersible. Since then, hundreds of Alimak rack and
pinion lifts have been installed on derricks, in hull columns,
outside platform modules and underneath helicopter
decks. They complement potentially hazardous stairways
and ladder-ways to provide convenient access to pump
and machine rooms and other critical areas.
Solving vertical transportation in potential explosive
environments
Solving highly complex vertical transportation problems
has been a core element of our business from the very start.
This deep-rooted commitment meant we developed flexi-
ble production routines unusual among suppliers of
“batch produced” lifts. And the benefit for our customers
is that we can implement unique projects demanding
special design and manufacturing approaches.
Designed for tough environments where space is at a
premium, the Alimak rack and pinion drive technology
delivers lifts providing flexible, reliable and economical
solution for vertical transportation systems.

Rack & pinion delivers unique advantages

Forget the need for lift shafts and special machine rooms
for traction drive. The Alimak lift carries its own machinery
on top of the car, eliminating the need for a separate
machine room. Moreover, the lift can be installed without
a load-bearing shaft, as the guide mast transfers the vertical
loads to the foundation. Perhaps best of all, the initial
capital investment in a rack and pinion solution is often
lower than that for a conventional wire rope lift.

Ready-to-use package ensures fast installation

For most applications, it is preferable to pre-assemble the
lift as much as possible at the manufacturing site to assure
assembly quality and ease of installation. This is especially
important for lifts to be installed in a potentially hazardous
area. The design concept of the Alimak rack and pinion lift
offers unique benefits in this respect because the lift car
and drive system are completely wired and tested at the
factory before delivery. This ready-to-use package ensures
fast installation by avoiding time consuming and expensive
corrective measures at the jobsite.

ALIMAK SE-Ex
Flexible, reliable lift design whatever the environment
As with all Alimak lifts, the ALIMAK SE-Ex is built on the
simple but ingenious rack and pinion principle. Our lifts
have their drive motors fitted on top of the car along with
the brake and gearbox. The motor drives a pinion that
moves along the rack, which is bolted to the lift mast
tower. This technology enables the lift car to climb up and
down the mast at controlled speed.
Lift car
Made of extruded aluminium, and hot dip galvanised steel,
the ALIMAK SE-Ex lift car maximises operator comfort
without compromising operating reliability and ability to
handle the toughest working environments. The car door,
which is equipped with windows, can be sited on any of
the three sides of the car away from the mast and is mechan-
ically and electrically interlocked. Almost all electric cabi-
nets and landing control boxes are fabricated in stainless
steel, with the remaining cabinets made of saltwater-proof
aluminium. Stainless steel car walls and doors are also
available for extremely aggressive environments.
Drive unit
The drive unit is located on top of the car and comprises
one or two gearboxes with drive pinion, direct-on-line
controlled electric motors, electromechanical disc brakes
and a centrifugal brake. The lift is normally equipped
with a centrifugal brake, located between the motor and
the gearbox, that allows passengers to be lowered to the
landing below in the event of a power failure.
Intelligent control system
The ALIMAK SE-Ex lift is push button operated from the car.
The controls are logically positioned on a panel in the car.
The SE-Ex is equipped with ALC-II, a new collective
control system, encompassing a built-in fault indication
programme, that ensures excellent stopping accuracy and
the ease of use. The ALC-II system can be provided with a
wide range of optional features such as Auto return, Auto
alarm and Fire and gas alarm.
Lift mast
The car climbs on a galvanised mast tower delivered in 1.5
m sections equipped with a bolt-on rack. The mast tower
gives a slim installation profile. Ties are used for attach-
ment of the mast tower to the structure.
A cable trolley guided by the mast tubes keeps the
cable tensioned. Cable guides installed at regular inter-
vals along the lift-way ensure the cable always remains
securely in place.
Accessories
A one, two, three or four-sided enclosure with double leaf
swing door can be supplied for the landings. It is available
in either aluminium or stainless steel.
Safety features
ALIMAK SE-Ex incorporates all the safety features normally
associated with the Alimak lift range.
The unique progressive Alimak safety device comes
into operation should the lift exceed the rated speed,
bringing the car to a smooth stop and the power to the
drive motor is cut off.
The machinery plate is constructed to ensure that the
pinion of the safety device always remains in engagement
with the rack. Safety hooks located beneath the lowest
drive pinion make sure the car cannot climb over the top
of the mast. Limit switches are provided at top and ground
levels and there is an ultimate limit switch in case of over-
run. Another example of the broad spectrum of Alimak
safety features is the phase failure relay that protects the
electrical system.
Codes and regulations
ALIMAK SE-Ex lifts comply with the European Lift
Directive 95/16/EC, EN 81-1:1998 with amendment A2:2004
and prEN81-7:1998, the American regulations ASME
A.17.1-2004 Part 4.1 and 5.7 as well as many national codes.
ALIMAK SE-Ex lifts are built for use in hazardous
areas Zone 1 or 2 with Gas group I, IIA or IIB and
Temperature class T1–T4 as per ATEX Directive 94/9/EG,
similar to Class 1 Division 2, Gas group C or D,
Temperature class T1–T4 according to NEC of USA.

Retrofits
Because the ALIMAK SE-Ex can easily be installed on any
structure, the lift is ideal for retrofitting on existing oil-
rigs that are undergoing upgrading, or retrofitted in other
hazardous industrial environments. Alimak has actively
been involved in a wide range of modernisation projects.
