Grade & Section: Activity 2 What Is Missing?
This lesson will teach you how to deal with a lot of number
pattern/sequence then eventually leads you on how to work with such
patterns by describing it using symbols and mathematical expressions
In this lesson, you will work with patterns. Recognizing and
that would guide you in finding the nth term of the given sequence.
extending patterns are important skills needed for learning concepts 4. Calauag, ____________, Gumaca, Plaridel, Atimonan, _______,
related to an arithmetic sequence. In line with this, you have to: Lucena We can find the next few terms of a sequence given its general
⚫ Generate and describe patterns - if you are travelling from Calauag going to Lucena,then what towns term.
⚫ Find the next few terms of a sequence you will be passing thru in a specific order to reach Lucena? For example, the general term of a sequence is , if we
are ask to find the first 4 terms of the sequence, we simply substitute
A sequence is a function whose domain is the finite set {1, 2, 3, … 5. Gumaca: Araña’t Balwarte, Lucban: _________, Pagbilao: Papag the numbers 1 to 4 to n.
n} or the finite set {1, 2, 3, …}. An example of this are the sequences 1, at Bilao, Calauag: _____ If n = 1, If n = 2 If n = 3 if n = 4
3, 5, 7, …which is an INFINITE set and the sequence 3, 6, 9, 12, 15 - If Gumaca is famous for Arana’t Balwarte Festival and Pagbilao is
which is a FINITE set. very popular for Papag at Bilao then:
-what festival is being celebrated in Lucban Quezon?
We can show patterns by skip counting or writing multiples of a number. -how about in Calauag?
✓ skip count by 2’s starting from 4
4, 6, 8, 10, 12, 14, … Activity 2 What is missing?
✓ write all the multiples of 3 Therefore, the first four terms with the general term of
3, 6, 9. 12. 15, … is 4, 7, 10, 13.
Also, we can use figures to show patterns.
For example what is the next shape? Find the first four terms of a sequence with the general term of
, , , , , , _________ 𝒂𝒏 = 𝒏𝟐 + 𝟒.
If n = 1 If n = 2 If n = 3 If n = 4
The answer is 3 triangles
𝑎𝑛 = 𝑛 2 + 4 𝑎𝑛 = 𝑛 2 + 4 𝑎𝑛 = 𝑛 2 + 4 𝑎𝑛 = 𝑛 2 + 4
What is the missing term in the sequence 3, 5, 7, ___? 𝑎1 = (1) + 4 𝑎2 = (2) + 4 𝑎3 = (3) + 4 𝑎4 = (4)2 + 4

ACTIVITY SHEET
Week 1 : Lesson 1C
Topic : SEARCHING THE PATTERN RULE
Competency 1 : Generates patterns
1
This lesson will make you aware that any listed terms of a
sequence are supported by mathematical equations that serve as the
pattern rule of the given sequence itself. Specifically, you should be
able to derive by pattern searching a mathematical expression (rule)
that describes the terms of the given sequence.
For example, in getting the correct formula of the sequence
3, 4, 5, 6, 7 is by analytical guess. The first five terms were
given so the values of n is from 1- 5. By considering the value
of the first term 3 and n is equal to 1, then we can say that
correct formula for the sequence 3, 4, 5, 6, is an = n + 2
𝒂𝒏 = 𝒏 + 𝟐
𝒂𝟏 = 𝟏 + 𝟐 = 𝟑
𝒂𝟐 = 𝟐 + 𝟐 = 𝟒
𝒂𝟑 = 𝟑 + 𝟐 = 𝟓
𝒂𝟒 = 𝟒 + 𝟐 = 𝟔
𝒂𝟓 = 𝟓 + 𝟐 = 𝟕
Another example is the sequence 2, 4, 8, 16, 32. By using
analytical guess its formula is an = 2n
𝒂𝒏 = 𝟐𝒏
𝒂𝟏 = 𝟐𝟏 = 𝟐
𝒂𝟐 = 𝟐𝟐 = 𝟒
Activity 4 Complete the table below by substituting the given 𝒂𝟑 = 𝟐𝟑 = 𝟖
values of n to the general term and list down the terms of the 𝒂𝟒 = 𝟐𝟒 = 𝟏𝟔
