Final Examination for Distance Education

Time Allowed: 125 minutes (13:25 – 15:30) February 03, 2021

READ THE NOTICE CAREFULLY

1. No part of this exam paper for distance learning may be reproduced, stored in a retrieval system,
or transmitted in any form or by any means, electronic, mechanical, photocopying, recording,
scanning.

2. The copies may not be sold or transferred to a third party.

3. Write and sign the following “Honor Pledge for Exam” on the top of your first solution sheet
before answering the question If you do not write and sign the pledge, your exam will not be
evaluated!

“I give you my Word of honor that the work I will submit for my exams (Midterm / Final /
Make-up / Quiz etc.) will be my own. I will not get any unauthorized help from any source
and I won't provide this kind of help to others. I understand and accept that any breach of
integrity will result in disciplinary proceedings and may result in severe penalties.”.

4. If you do not use the template and prepare your solution sheets by handwriting, your solutions
or answers will not be accepted and not evaluated.

5. You must upload the solution sheets photo files CONVERTED to readable PDF format in
“SINGLE FILE” with proper file name to both “UBS Homework (Ödev) Module”. You must
also send your PDF solution files to the instructor’s e-mail (aydin.ulker@ikcu.edu.tr)

6. The exam will be launched online at 13:25 on both “Homework (Ödev) Module”. Time allowed
for the exam is 125 minutes. You must use last 5 minutes to upload and send your PDF file.

7. Your upload must be finished before 15:30 on Wednesday, 03.02.2021 otherwise your exam
solutions will not be evaluated. No excuse will be accepted!

8. Please follow other instructions previously sent.

INSTRUCTIONS :

 Read the questions and what is requested clearly

 Try to give concise answers and explanations (neither too short nor too long).
 Build your own sentences, do not refer to internet sources.
 Do not write in the narrative form, but think hard and express like a technical staff.

Question 1 (25 pts)

Specify the differences among “research and development”, “product development”, “engineering design”,
“mechanical engineering design” and “machine (elements) design” processes by giving examples on a simple
hand mixer used in a kitchen.

Notice:

 Do not write the differences between the processes without examples from the mentioned product.

Question 2 (25 pts)

In engineering design what are the methods used to improve reliability.

a) List them.
b) Give different examples for each method from mechanical design of parts, components or machine
elements.
c) Explain how reliability of parts / components or machine elements given as example for part (b)

Notice:

 Do not give the examples mentioned in the lectures and textbook.

 Question 3 (20 pts)

a) Explain what is poka - yoke (mistake-proofing)

b) Give three seperate examples to poka - yoke for both design and manufacturing of parts.
(i.e. 3 for design, 3 for manufacturing)

Notice:

 You may draw simple sketches to explain the examples.

 You cannot get full grade just by drawing sketches without explaining them in detail.
 Do not give the examples mentioned in the lectures and textbook.

Question 4 (30 pts)

a) Explain the performance metrics as an analytical methods for materials selection used
in engineering design.

b) Show and explain separable functions of performance metrics.

c) Also find and explain performance metrics used in the design of a light, stiff, hollow round bar
with inner diameter d and wall thickness t.

(Hint: Use angle of twist and stiffness equations)
