NAME: Donise Ronadel Santos SECTION: 64

Topic: SEA Games 2019 cauldron Issue on art appreciation: Some people claim that the
cauldron is overpriced while others justify the price because it
was designed by the National Artist for Architecture
Francisco Manosa.
Read: The article contains information about the topic and the issue on art appreciation. Answer each
question in a maximum of 5 sentences only. You may write your answers in Filipino or English. Each question
is 10 points.
1. Should the “works” of National Artists like Francisco Manosa, specifically the SEA Games 2019 Cauldron,
really be expensive? Cite one detail from the reading material to support your answer.

Since it was mentioned in the previous reading that value of art depends on the status of an artist, which is
also supported by the claims of Duterte and Cayetano in the reading that the SEA Games 2019 cauldron was
inspired by Mañosa’s “work of art” which caused its high cost, I believe that works of national artists are just
right to be expensive. Given that national artists are well known in industry because of their efforts in their
previous works, the value of their artworks will signify the legacy of their names even they are already gone.
Also, giving an artist’s work with high value gives an artist a special recognition which I believe the reason why
the successor of the late great architect Mañosa posted how excited he is to see the cauldron come to life.

2. Is the cauldron suggesting cultural authority or cultural heritage? (Choose one only, avoid answering “it can
be both”.) Cite one detail from the reading material to support your answer.

For me, cauldron suggests cultural authority. Although it was mentioned in the reading that its design was
from the Centennial Tower highlighting the Philippines' Asian heritage and character, and the cauldron's cost
is touted as representing the new and bolder character of the Filipino, the fact that it costs expensive because
of the name of the artist instead of its meaning and the citizens are concern on Mañosa as the original artist
of the artwork instead of focusing on the real purpose of the artwork, it involves authority. To support my
claim that it suggests cultural authority, President Duterte and Cayetano defended the accusations of it being
too expensive reasoning out that because it is the artwork of Mañosa, and a citizen defending that Mañosa
was disrespected because he was an architect yet his artwork was just trashed.
