Report (Beam Strengthening)
strengthening system
Background
Detailed NDT and destructive tests had been carried out on 13th January 2021 by Government
engineering college, Thrissur. We have received their detailed report. According to it, one of
the beams and footing slabs have shown concrete grade loss and needs strengthening. Rest
of the samples have shown satisfactory results.
Secondly, repairing issue of slab and wall has depicted in the report. In this document we have
elaborated on system required for beam strengthening. Repairing products and systems have
also been emphasized.
FRP
Fiber Reinforced Polymers (FRP) composites comprise fibres of high tensile strength within a
polymer matrix such as vinylester or epoxy. FRP composites have emerged from being exotic
materials used only in niche applications following the Second World War, to common
engineering materials used in a diverse range of applications such as aircraft, helicopters,
space-craft, satellites, ships, submarines, automobiles, chemical processing equipment,
sporting goods and civil infrastructure. The role of FRP for strengthening of existing or new
reinforced concrete structures is growing at an extremely rapid pace owing mainly to the ease
and speed of construction, and the possibility of application without disturbing the existing
functionality of the structure.

Repairing system: -
Type of product to use to repair particular crack is depends on its nature and type.
For hair line cracks on slab substrate, we suggest low viscosity epoxy grouting. It involves
fixing of injection spouts at regular intervals of 1m c/c and injection of grout through it.
For comparatively wider cracks, we suggest crack widening in form of V grove and filling it
using epoxy base mortar or thixotropic mortar.
For nonstructural cracks on wall paster, we suggest acrylic base crack stuffing putty to fill in
the cracks. Crack filled area can be camouflaged using sand topping.
Note: - 1) FRP strengthening system is not applicable for below ground applications. Footing slab has marginal
strength loss but considering durability conditions, it can be strengthened using other alternative strengthening
method.
