EEX4448 –TMA01 Academic Year 2020/2021

TMA 1 Due date extended to: 26/03/2021

Submit your TMA to the drop box in LearnOUSL under the course EEX4448.

Q1
a. Briefly explain the losses of a transformer. Explain the variation of losses with load.
b. Explain why low voltage side is short circuited during transformer short circuit test?
c. A farm is supplied at 400V, three-phase electrical system. Three 20 A, 120 V circuits are
required for lights and receptacle outlets. Determine the minimum kVA rating of the single-
phase, 400 V to 120 V step-down transformer.
d. A transformer has 600 turns of the primary winding and 20 turns of the secondary winding.
i. Determine the secondary voltage if the secondary circuit is open and the primary
voltage is 120 V.
ii. Determine the current in the primary and secondary winding, given that the
secondary winding is connected to a resistance load 15 Ω.
Q2
a. Explain briefly the problems that arise with magnetization and unbalanced loading of Yy
connected three-phase transformers. Explain why these problems are not present in Yd
transformers?
b. Three phase 400/1200V, 25 KVA, Ydl, 50 Hz, core type transformer is subjected to standard
open circuit and short circuit tests. Test results are shown below:
Open circuit test: 400 V, 2A, 1 kV (tested on LV side)
Short circuit test: 50 V, 36 A, 1.5 kW (tested on HV side)

i. Draw the equivalent circuit of the transformer referred to HV and LV sides

respectively with indicating all the parameters.
ii. Calculate the full load efficiency of the transformer at 0.85 lagging power factor.
iii. Calculate the input voltage when the transformer delivers a balanced three phase load
of 15 kW at 1200 V and 0.85 power factor lagging.
iv. What is the current in an LV phase winding under the conditions in (ii) above?
v. Sketch line voltage phasors in the LV and HV sides indicating phase shifts.

Q3
a. Describe briefly the various advantages and disadvantages of auto-transformer.
b. An autotransformer shown in figure Q3 has a coil with total number of turns NCD = 200
between terminals C and D. It has got one tapping at A such that NAC = 100 and another
tapping at B such that NBA = 50. Calculate currents in various parts of the circuit and show
their directions when 400 V supply is connected across AC and two resistive loads of 60 Ω
and 40 Ω are connected across BC and DC respectively.

Q4
a. Briefly explain the characteristics of the DC series motor and the application on its
characteristic.
b. A separately excited dc motor has a field control circuit which ensures that the field current
is directly proportional to the armature current. Sketch torque/speed curve to a uniform
scale when the machine is operated on full and half rated armature voltage.
c. A 250, 4 poles, wave wound DC series motor has 782 conductors on its armature. It has
armature and series field resistance of 0.75 Ω. The motor takes a current of 40 A and has flux
per pole of 25 mWb. Estimate its speed and gross torque developed.
