GRADE LEVEL: VIII- St. Lawrence

I. Objectives
At the end of the lesson the students will be able to:
1. Use appropriate strategies in unlocking the meaning of unfamiliar words;
2. Write a personal response to a literary text which is the Excerpt of Ramayana;
3. Understand the relationship between the epic poem Ramayana and Mahabharata.
4. Apply the speaking guidelines of reciting a poem in front of the class

Reference: Exploring Literature and Grammar (Afro-Asian Literature) pages 11-16


Materials: laptop, PowerPoint presentation

III. PROCEDURE
A. Routinely activity
1. Greetings
2. Prayer
3. Checking of attendance
B. Motivation
1. Ask the students with essential questions:
 What are your fondest memories with your family?
 What wonderful experiences have you shared with your parents and siblings?

C. Instruction/Delivery
1. The teacher will instruct the students to answer first the Vocabulary Check on page 13.
2. After answering the students will read the story of Excerpt from Ramayana by Valmiki.
3. Comprehension Check. They will answer the following questions to test if they understand the
selection:
 How would you describe Sita as a wife? Based on her words and decision, what characteristics
does she possess?
 If you were Sita, would you make the same decision? Justify your answer.
 How would you compare Bharata and Rama? How are they similar or different from each other
in terms of their characteristics?
 If you were Rama, would you refuse the throne offered by Bharata? Justify your answer.
4. Values Appreciation
 How do you show your obedience and loyalty to your own siblings? To your parents? Share your
answer with your classmates.

D. Practice
Exercise.
1. The teacher will read again the excerpts of Ramayana. And ask the students this question:
 How would you compare your listening to this epic to these other situations of listening?
a. Listening to your best friend as he tells an exciting story from last weekend
b. Listening to your favorite band as they sing a highly emotional song
E. Enrichment
Exercise.
1. Each student will read aloud the excerpt of Ramayana individually in front.
2. They need to follow the specified guidelines in speaking in front of an audience.
3. Their classmates and teacher will give a feedback on each performance.

F. Evaluation
1. Group Activity. Each group should prepare a manila paper and a marker. They will write the flow
chart of the Excerpt of Ramayana to outline the story. After outlining the flow chart they will
present/report their output in the class.

G. Assignment
Researching on the Epic Poem Mahabharata
Conduct a research on the Mahabharata to determine how exactly it reflects Hindu Culture. Write an
essay with 300-500 words on this matter. Choose your theme from the following:
 The concepts of dharma and karma in the Mahabharata
 The characterization of the god Krishna in the Mahabharata
 Rama and Arjuna: A comparison of the Heroes of the Hindu epics
