Lesson Plan in Grade 8

Afro-Asian Literature

I. Objectives
At the end of the lesson the students will be able to:
1. Understand the concepts and connections of Yin and Yang;
2. Explain how a selection (poem) maybe influenced by culture, history, environment, or other
factors in time of Tang Dynasty;
3. Appreciate literature as a means of understanding the human being and the forces he/she to
contend with.

II. Subject Matter

III. PROCEDURE
A. Routinely activity
1. Greetings
2. Prayer
3. Checking of attendance
B. Motivation
1. The teacher will show a picture of a symbol which is the Yin and Yang she will ask the
students if they are familiar with the symbol and if they know what it is called.
2. Then the teacher will play a video of showing the hidden meaning of the symbol.
3. After the video presentation the teacher will ask the students what is the differences
between yin and yang and discusses its significance of it in the Tang Dynasty.
C. Instruction/ Delivery
1. The teacher will introduce 2 poem selections that show opposite attitudes which are the
Taoism and Confucianism.
2. The teacher will give the students a brief background about the Taoism and Confucianism.
D. Practice
1. The teacher will ask the students significant questions for the comprehension check.

F. Evaluation
1. The teacher will ask the students some questions:
 In the first poem the Taoist persona (Li Po) marvels at natural wonders. How can we
show our own appreciation for the beauty of nature? What can we do in order to
preserve this beauty?
 In the second poem, the Confucian persona (Tu Fu) subtly criticizes the old man for
fleeing from his duties. Why should we respect the authority of our superiors?
 What is the importance of maintaining balance life? For example, why is it important for
the Chinese to balance a “go-with-the-flow” attitude (Taoism) with obedience to social
hierarchy (Confucianism)?
G. Assignment
In the selections, you discovered how Taoism and Confucianism have helped shape the two
poems. Conduct further research on the influence of culture, particularly religion and philosophy,
by looking for the following poems:

 Autumn Evening in a Mountain Retreat (China)


 The book of Songs (China)
 The Laws of Manu (India)
 The Hyakunin-isshu (Japan)
 God Said I Made a Man (Philippines)
Answer the following questions for your research.
1. Who wrote or compiled the poems?
2. In what year and historical period were the poems written? What were the dominant religions
and philosophies in the country at that time?
3. How do the poems reflect the cultural influence? What words or lines clearly depict the religion
or philosophy?

2. Interpret and utilize the purpose of speaking;
3. Find the significance of listening in our daily lives.
II. Subject Matter
Types of Listening and Purposes of Speaking

III. PROCEDURE
A. Routinary activity
1. Greetings
2. Prayer
3. Checking of attendance
B. Motivation
1. Paper Exercise. An activity to test the listening skills of the students
2. The teacher will instruct the students to close their eyes while holding a piece of paper. And
instruct them a step by step on folding the paper that will test their listening skills.
3. At the end of the activity the results will show how the students actively listen and follow
the instructions of the teacher.
C. Instruction/ Delivery
1. The teacher will discuss the 4 types of listening
2. The teacher will give examples and let the students identify what type of listening is most
helpful in these situations.
 Your friend is in distress because he has gotten into a disagreement with his
brother.
 A salesperson approaches you as you are strolling in a mall. She describes the
benefits of her product and offers you a “great” discount.
 You are exhausted after a day in school. You find out that your sister purchased CD
of your favorite music group.
 Your Social Studies teacher will discuss the classical history of China. Afterwards, she
will ask questions for a graded recitation.

3. The teacher will discuss the Purposes of Speaking


4. The teacher will give examples and let the students identify what purpose of speaking is
used in these situations.

 You tell a joke to your friends.


 You chat with your father about what happened in school yesterday.
 You speak with your classmates about your favourite food- how it tastes, how it looks.
 You want your sister to believe that owning a dog is better than owning a cat.

D. Practice
1. Role Play. The students will be grouped into 4, each group will be given a certain type of
listening and purpose of speaking that they will present in the class.
2. They will be given 5 minutes of collaborating with their group mates.
3. A criterion for judging is also presented before the performance.

E. Enrichment
1. First 15 Activity. First 10 students who will get the correct answer will be rewarded with points
individually and group.
2. The teacher will provide situations and the students will identify which type of listening it
belongs.
