13. List and describe briefly five external factors that must be present or provided to sustain life.
Nutrients- nutrients, taken in via the diet, contain the chemical substances used for energy and
cell building.
Oxygen- reactions that release energy are oxidative, therefore they need oxygen to survive. All
living things require oxygen for cellular respiration.
Water- It provides the watery environment necessary for chemical reactions and the fluid base
for body secretions and excretions.
Appropriate atmospheric pressure- require for proper breathing and gas exchange in the lungs.
Normal body temperature- necessary for chemical reactions to occur at life sustaining rates.
