SYNOPSIS

Emily Rose, a 19-year-old old Catholic college girl, believed to be possessed by six demons
and died after a couple of days after being submitted to an exorcism carried out by their parish
priest, named Father Moore. Emily's parents authorized Father Moore for the exorcism but after
Emily died, they accused him of negligent homicide since he had suggested Emily to interrupt the
use of epilepsy medications. In order to avoid a scandal, the Archdiocese hires the successful
lawyer named Erin Bruner, and the prosecution assigns the prosecutor named Ethan Thomas. The
trial becomes a battle between faith and science. Based on Prosecuting attorney Ethan Thomas
contends that the Emily suffered from both epilepsy and psychosis and should have been medically
diagnosed but defense lawyer Erin Bruner argues that Emily's condition cannot be explained by
science alone wherein she believed that it was related on religious. As the trial continues, the story
of Emily Rose was explained from the beginning of her condition wherein her father stated that
their family has a history of a mental illness. On the other hand, experts in the field of psychology,
neurology, and medicine were called to explain the causes of Emily’s death. In addition, a medical
doctor, who was present during the exorcism, comes forward to reveal an audio tape made during
the rite. The priest is then called to the stand to testify. The tape is played, and the movie then
flashes back to the exorcism. It is performed on Halloween night because Father Moore believes
it might be easier to draw out the demons on that night. Nevertheless, Father Moore is ultimately
found guilty; however, on a recommendation from the jury, the judge agrees to a sentence of time
served.

REACTION

Exorcism of Emily Rose is a horror film wherein at first, I was scared to watch but all
throughout the movie I found it as interesting because it has two perspective such as in science and
faith or religion. The story was greatly explained from the beginning wherein Emily started to
experience unexplained happenings on her while she was in dormitory. Based on the movie, it
portrays that people have different perspective in life wherein some believe in science, but some
believe by their faith. In my opinion, this film measures how far our faith religiously or by in
science. Maybe, the explanation of both lawyers has some point but at the end of the day science
is more valid than religious because it has an evidence-based reasons.
RELEVANT TO SUBJECT MATTER

The movie of “Exorcism of Emily Rose” is based on true to life story of Anneliese Michel.
Its relevant to our subject “Care of Clients with Maladaptive Patterns of Behavior” is that based
on the medical experts she had been diagnosed of psychotic epileptic disorder wherein she suffers
from epilepsy and psychosis. In medical, we could observe that she had a problem mentally by
which it is possible because her father stated that their family has a history of a mental illness. As
a nursing student, the film was a great example for us to see what the condition of patients having
a problem mentally and, we could see that there is different perspective such as faith and medical.
Moreover, the movie displayed challenges of being a Christian medic bringing these two aspects
together in a balanced way.
