The Passage is for number 6 – 10
In 2009, I rented an apartment in Sydney while studying for my master degree. I
travelled daily by bus for my classes, which were usually in the evening. I was quite late
by the time I got back to the bus station and I would still need to take another bus home.
One night, I missed the last bus and I didn’t have enough cash to take a taxi. Then,
I decided to walk the three-kilometres journey home, which would be fine if I weren’t so
tired that day. It also didn’t help that the route was pretty rough and dark. But I plodded
forward with the promise of a night’s rest pushing me on. After walking for a few minutes,
a car stopped in front of me. The driver asked where I was headed and offered me a ride.
He really made my say as he went out of his way to get me to my apartment.
During the ride, the driver told me that when he saw me walking, it reminded him
of his uncle who used to walk to work by the same road and though he often saw his
uncle, he had never offered a ride as he was headed in a different direction. Sadly, his
uncle passed away due to an illness and until today he still feels guilty of not being kinder
to his uncle.
