1. SCOPE
The scope of this procedure is to provide general criteria to organize, perform and evaluate
function tests on final products or on particular specially manufactured prototypes.
This procedure is written according with THERMOENGINEERING Operating Instructions
IO7.2.7 – Rev 1.

2. OVERVIEW
This procedure can be applied to all equipment manufactured by THERMOENGINEERING
which could undergo function tests, in scale or in real operating conditions.
This procedure can also be used as a general guideline for the criteria to be adopted to carry
out function tests.
If not otherwise specified, the acceptance values must be the same contained in the test
report to be submitted to the customer or to the certification authority for approval, as
indicated in this procedure.
In the same way, measurement and control equipment for results verification must also be
approved in order to ascertain that the required technical standards are met.
The conditions in which the test will be carried out must be the most suitable to allow valid
results and data corresponding to the test pattern to be obtained.
This procedure does not include function tests for equipment and products for which a
particular specification and test procedure has been issued.

3. METHODS

3.1. FUNCTION TEST IN REAL CONDITIONS

All the tests must be carried out by reproducing the precise processing conditions of the unit
or the equipment to be tested.

Electrical panels, general electronic instruments and pneumatic equipment generally belong
to this category because they can be easily be brought to normal operating conditions to
verify their efficiency and functionality.
To complete examination, measurement and control equipment can be used.

3.2. FUNCTION TEST IN SIMULATED CONDITIONS

All those tests which cannot be performed reproducing the precise processing conditions and
are therefore executed at different simulation levels.
Burners, flare tips, arresters, etc, can only be tested in simulated conditions.
In this case two types of function tests can be performed:

• Test on scale models or prototypes;

• Test on real equipment but in conditions which do not correspond exactly to the real
ones.
In any case, appropriate documentation will be issued for the relevant test, certifying quality,
type and results according to the following paragraphs.

4. QUALIFIED PERSONNEL
The personnel carrying out all activities related to the test must have a sufficient knowledge
of the manufacturing process and the operating conditions of the system or the parts
undergoing test procedures, in order to be able to verify and state the suitability of the parts
under verification.
The actual qualifications of the personnel are verified and tested according to document POI

5. APPROVALS
All the function tests belonging to the group described in paragraph 3.2 of this procedure
must be accurately examined and verified for approval by the customer or by the certification
authority.
The Technical Department together with the Quality Control office should issue a testing
procedure to this purpose, containing at least the following:

• Description of the product to be tested

• Description of the type of test to be performed
• Test procedure to be carried out
• Test type (real / simulated)
• Evaluation of the simulation grade to be obtained with the test (for simulated tests
only)
• Description of the measure and control methods to be applied
• Description of the expected results
• Verification methods
• Compliance criteria
Such a report, together with the necessary schemes and drawings, will be submitted to the
customer/certification authority for approval or modification.
The test will be performed only after official approval has been obtained.
The relevant procedures for the function tests described in paragraph 3.1 of this document
should not be submitted to the customer/certification authority for approval.
In order to allow verification of the correspondence between the test conditions and
methods, used during the test, with the real conditions in which the product will be used, at
the test phase shall be taken as reference the job documents, already approved by the client,
that can identify the product and where it is possible find the foreseen operatives conditions.

6. PERFORMING TESTS
All the tests will be performed according to the approved test report.
Should additional tests prove to be necessary, they will be discussed and agreed upon with
the functions in charge and involved in the test.
Function tests on equipment described in specific procedures must be carried out according
to the above mentioned documents.

7. CROSSCHECK OF THE TESTED PRODUCTS

In case function tests are carried out on final products, it is necessary to perform a visual
check once testing is complete and, if necessary, to execute non destructive checks in order to
guarantee the expected quality level for the product.
It will be necessary to restore the original product's conditions, paying particular attention
and care to surface treatments, markings, protections and packaging for shipment.
If part of the material shows any sign of damage, it should be replaced with new material.

8. COMPLIANCE CRITERIA
As a general rule, deviations in the expected results for the operating conditions established
in the purchase order and/or in the technical specifications, cannot not be accepted.
During the test, the level of compliance to the above mentioned rules will be stated, and the
possible release of a Non-conformity certificate be evaluated if defects or lack of performance
of the material under testing has been ascertained.

9. CERTIFICATION
The Quality Control function will issue certificates stating that FUNCTION TESTING has been
carried out and reporting the characteristics of the test and its results.

The certificate must be signed by the Quality Assurance manager of the secondary supplier
and by the person in charge of the testing for the Customer, if present.
In case an official certification authority is due to take part in the tests, the latter must issue
the necessary documentation to confirm test results.
