Green methods for hydrogen
production

During the 10 International Conference

on Green Energy 2010, Ibrahim Dincer,
a mechanical engineer who works as a
professor at the University of Ontario
Institute of Technology, presented his
paper. In that paper he discussed his
research on the various clean and
renewable methods of hydrogen
production. So, let us see what he said.

In the quote to the right Dincer makes

mention of the available sources of
green energy that are already available
from renewable energies that have been
developed. This means that there is
already technology that can facilitate
the production of hydrogen.
Dincer makes sure to note that while
they are all renewable energies, they
are not equal and makes it one of his
goals to write ”a comprehensive
classification of green methods for
hydrogen” so that the reason as to
why each differ is known. After doing
extensive research between the
various forms of methods that use
renewable energies,

“Hydrogen production can be obtained from green energy sources. The
electrical and thermal energy can be derived from renewable energies (like
solar, wind, geothermal, tidal, wave, ocean thermal, hydro, biomass), or
from nuclear energy, or from recovered energy." (Dincer, 1956)
Dincer came to the conclusion that the main concern is ”the quantities
produced by [each] method. By looking at the methods…there are three key
commodities, namely electricity, thermal heat and light to drive the
hydrogen production processes.” With this concern the best methods are the
ones that can efficiently make use of these commodities without the expense
of not being green and renewable.

”Of course, each production
method has advantages and
disadvantages,” wrote Dincer
making it clear that each method
has their pros and cons, with
each pro and con being
determined by location,
accessibilty, and material
resource used to produce the
hydrogen.
Even after just hearing of the
pros and cons of each method, I
imagine many people feel relief.
Relief that there are so many
viable and ever developing
methods to depart from the
reliance on fossil fuels. While
we step ever so close to
irreversible climate decimation it
is great to hear of the many
methods being worked on to
help humanity.
So with the many ways of producing
hydrogen already available and with
many of them being developed and
refined we can only hope for hydrogen
to be available on a mass scale for
energy use. This delelopment in
hydrogen based energy is crucial in the
necessary reduction of greenhouse gases
that are currently devastating the planet.
With this research done by Dincer the
development in the methods of
hydrogen production are promising and
exciting.
