Strategic reading, fluent reading, silent reading, bottom-up reader, phonics
approach, intensive reading, top-down reader, extensive reading, interactive
models of reading, background knowledge.

1. Top-down reader: asks students to focus on the meaning of what they are
reading rather than on individual words or phrases.

2. Bottom-up reader: processing happens when someone tries to understand


language by looking at individual meanings or grammatical characteristics of the
most basic units of the text.

3. Strategic reading: is a three-level series designed to develop reading,


vocabulary-building, and critical-thinking skills.

4. Fluent reading: is defined as the ability to read with speed, accuracy, and proper
expression. In order to understand what they read, children must be able to read
fluently whether they are reading aloud or silently.

5. Intensive reading: involves learners reading in detail with specific learning aims
and tasks. It can be compared with extensive reading, which involves learners
reading texts for enjoyment and to develop general reading skills.

6. Interactive models of reading: combines elements from bottom-up and top-up


reading from different resources.

7. Phonics approach: Words are made up from small units of sound called
phonemes.

8. Silent reading:  is a reading skill which allows one to read with outvoicing the
words. may involve subvocalization or silent speech, is defined as the internal
speech made when reading a word, thus allowing the reader to imagine the sound
of the word as it is read.

9. Extensive reading: involves learners reading texts for enjoyment and to develop
general reading skills. It can be compared with intensive reading, which means
reading in detail with specific learning aims and tasks.

10. Background knowledge: information that is essential to understanding a


situation or problem.
