LESSON 2 – DOMAIN AND RANGE, TYPES

OF FUNCTIONS

Objectives:
❖ Give the domain and range of a function
❖ Identify the different types of function
e.

Domain and Range of a Function

 Domain is the set of all allowable values for x.
It is the set of all the x-values or first coordinates.
 Range is the set of all the y-values or second
coordinates.
Solution: Graphs a, b and d are functions while c and e
are not because they did not pass the vertical line test. Examples:
1. f(x) = 4x – 15 Domain: All real nos.
Range: All real nos.

2. f(x) = x2 – 9 Domain: All real nos.

Range: y ≥ -9
y = -1

Can you give the domain of the following functions? Which of 3. What is a linear function?
the following equation below is a not function?  A polynomial function with degree 1 is called linear
function. It is in the form f(x) = mx + b, where m is the
slope and b is the y-intercept. The graph of every linear
function is a straight slanting line.

Examples: f(x) = 2x – 5
f(x) = 3x + 7
4
f(x) = -5x +2
Solution:
Given equations: Domain: 4. What is a quadratic function?
 A polynomial function of degree 2 is a quadratic
function in the form f(x) = ax2 + bx + c, where a, b, and c are
real numbers and a ≠ 0. Quadratic functions are graphically
represented by a parabola with vertex.

Examples: f(x) = 2x2 - 7x + 10

f(x) = x2 – 1
f(x) = 3x2

5.What is a cubic function?

 A polynomial function of third degree is a cubic
function in the form f(x) = ax3 + bx2 + cx + d, where a, b, c, and

d are real numbers and a ≠ 0. Cubic functions are represented
by curves passing through (0,0) with turning points. Graphs of

classified further depending on the degree of the given f(x) = 5x3
polynomial. The degree of a polynomial function is basically the
highest exponent or power among the terms of the function. 6. What is a piecewise function?

2. Identify the function to be used in representing the given.
f(3) = 1400
3. Write the function/equation that describes the problem.
4. Use the function to solve the problem.
d.Checking
5. Check the answer.
1400 = 800 + 200(3)
1400 = 800 + 600
Examples: 1400=1400

a.Given
b. Equation Let x be the number
Let x be the number of advertisement x2 be the square of a number
f(x) be the amount of money he wanted to raise
f(x) = 32000x b. Equation
256,000 = 32000x x2 – x = 90

c. Solution c. Solution
256,000 = 32000x x2 – x = 90
256,000 = 32000x x2 – x – 90 = 0
32000 32000 (x – 10) (x + 9) = 0 Factoring FOIL x2+9x-10x-90
8=x x1 = 10 and x2 = -9
d. Checking e. Checking:
If x = 8 If x = 10
256,000 = 32000x (10)2 – (10) = 90
256,000 = 32000(8) 100 – 10 = 90
256,000 = 256,000 90 = 90
Answer: Piolo Pascual will need 8 advertisements in
order to raise P256,000.00 for the charity. If x = -9
(-9)2 – (-9) = 90
2. Julia’s Salon is offering P800 for the rebond, and additional 81 + 9 = 90
