1. a) Bromine will react in a similar way as chlorine with methane.

Write an
equation for this reaction.

Equation: CH4(g) + Br2(g) CH3Br(g) + HBr(g)

b) The first step in the mechanism is the breaking of the Br-Br bond. State
the conditions required for this process to occur. Write an equation for this
step and state the type of reaction taking place.
Conditions: - Ultraviolet light or above 300oC
Equation: - Br2(g) 2Br (g)
Type of reaction: - Radical Substitution

c) The final step of the reaction is a termination step, write an equation for a
possible termination step for this reaction.
Equation Br + Br  Br2
CH3 + CH3  C2H6 Any of these

CH3 + Br  CH3Br

2. a) Petrol is a mixture of hydrocarbons containing between 6 and 10 carbon

atoms per molecule. Some of these alkanes are isomers of one another
i) Explain the term structural isomer
A structural isomer is a compound with the same molecular formula but a
different structural formula.

ii) State the molecular formula of an alkane present in petrol and draw
its full displayed formula
Any of C6H14, C7H16 C8H18, C9H20, C10H22
b) The major alkane in camping gas is butane. Some camping gas was reacted
with chlorine to form a mixture of isomers.
i) What conditions are required for the reaction to occur

Ultraviolet light or a temperature above 300OC

ii) Two isomers A and B were separated from the mixture, have
molecular masses of 92.5gmol-1. Deduce the molecular formula of
A and B and name each compound.

Molecular Formula = C4H9Cl

Names of isomers 1-chlorobutane and 2-chlorobutane
