(QJLQHW\SH This Operating Instruction concerns Wärtsilä Vasa 32, 32LN, Wärtsilä
32GD, 34SG and 32DF engines.

*HQHUDO It is an inevitablefact that the air side of the charge air cooler gets dirty
after some time in operation. The period of time depends on the running
conditions, but eventually the cooler will need cleaning. See also Technical
Bulletin 3215T033.
To facilitate the cleaning and shorten the downtime of the engine, Wärtsilä
has developed a new cleaning concept. This will typically cut the time
needed for cleaning in half.

&KDUDFWHULVWLFV The new cleaning concept is based on the use of an environmentally

friendly cleaning fluid, the Wärtsilä Combi Degreaser. The fluid is heated
and circulated through the cooler by a pump unit during the cleaning
process.

COMBI DEGREASER – the

environmentally friendly concentrate

1. General overview
The Combi Degreaser concentrate has been developed for cleaning oil
residues and contamination from charge air coolers, oil coolers and similar
systems. Use of concentrate in cleaning of oil residues is an effective mean
to reduce maintenance costs and required time. Combi Degreaser has no
transport restrictions, is not harmful for health, easily bio-degradable, not fire
hazardous, does not affect O-rings and gaskets and is not corrosive. Combi
Degreaser can be used in cleaning of all oil systems and equipment like oil
coolers and charge air coolers.

Charge Air Cooler Cleaning using

Combi Degreaser

1. General overview
The charge air cooler has a tendency to become clogged and fouled after a while
in operation. Different types of dirt in the air such as cement dust, oil dust etc.
are the main cause of this. In many cases re-circulation of exhaust gases
causes the cooler to become clogged, due to gas leakage from damaged pipe
clamps or bellows. The same re-circulation of exhaust gases can also occur if
the charge air suction filter is located to close to the smokestack, especially on
power plants.
Cleaning of the airside of the charge air cooler for diesel engines is a necessary,
routine maintenance task, normally specified in the engine manual. The cleaning
intervals can vary from one installation to another due to prevailing operation
conditions and quality of inlet air.
Cleaning of the charge air cooler is normally a time consuming process. For
example if a bath is used, the recommended time is 16-24 hours. However, as a
result of a continuous search for different cleaning methods, Wärtsilä can now
also provide a new more effective method for cleaning charge air coolers in a
bath. The time reduction can be more than halved in most cases.

2. The importance of keeping the cooler clean

A dirty or partly blocked air cooler decreases the efficiency of cooling and
reduces the airflow through the cooler. This result in higher charge air
temperatures and as a consequence, the quantity of air to the cylinders is further
reduced, causing a rise of the exhaust gas temperature due to inefficient
combustion. The result is that the thermal load on the engine increased.
High exhaust gas temperature also increases the risk of corrosive deposits on
the exhaust valves.
A dirty air cooler has also a significant effect on the fuel consumption.

When an air cooler is due for cleaning Wärtsilä recommend using the new
cleaning method together with the latest type of Wärtsilä Biodegradable cleaning
concentrate, Wärtsilä Combi Degreaser, product number C51003.
This Wärtsilä Combi Degreaser concentrate is environmentally friendly not
harmful for health, not fire hazardous, does not affect O-rings and gaskets and is
not corrosive.

3. Description of the cleaning process

The cleaning effect is based on the new cleaning liquid, Wärtsilä Combi
Degreaser, in combination with the flow of the liquid, transporting the dirt out of
the cooler.
The work procedure for cleaning the air cooler, airside according to the new
procedure is as follows:
- Dismantle the air cooler core from the engine
- Put the cooler in a suitable stainless steel or plastic tank with a filter screen
in the bottom (replaceable filter pad)
- Install the funnel-shaped cover (Fig 1.) on the coolers air outlet side
- Fill up the tank with the cleaning liquid, Wärtsilä Combi Degreaser, mixing
ratio 1:4 of water
- The liquid needs to be heated to about 60°C for best cleaning effect
- Connect a rubber hose from the circulation pump unit (Fig 2.) to the cover
and a suction hose from the tank
- Circulate the liquid for ~ 4 to 8 hours depending on degree of fouling
- Check the pH value (it should not exceed 3 for best cleaning result)
- Flush the cooler with fresh clean water after cleaning
This new procedure can be combined with ultra sonic equipment if available.

can be ordered separately using the indicated reference numbers according to
the table above.
If the Heat Exchanger Cleaning equipment is already available, the same pump
unit and hoses can be used.
For inquiries and price quotation for the product, contact your nearest Wärtsilä
office or Wärtsilä Finland, Service department.

7. Limitations
This procedure is specially developed for Wärtsilä engines. The equipment is
presently available for Wärtsilä Vasa 32 engines but the engine type range is
continuously expanded.
The compatibility between the equipment and other cleaning liquids than Wärtsilä
Combi Degreaser is not guaranteed.
