Week 2 Evaluation

1. Take a look back on the chronological table list given in Week 1’s Activity. Not only
were the inventions stated there, but also their inventions. From the table, select your top
five (5) inventors who you think are the greatest contributors to humanity and explain
your selection according to the definition of an intellectual.
 1. Ancient Egyptians – they invented the early version of paper. Without them,
there will no better versions of paper. If not because of them, maybe humans are
still writing on leaves, piece of woods and in caves.
 2. Joseph-Marie Jacquard – he invented automated cloth weaving loom that is
beneficial for programmable computers. Without it, there will no programmable
computers because it is used to store patterns that helps inspire programmable
computers. He was a French weaver and merchant. He played an important role in
the development of the earliest programmable loom (the "Jacquard loom"), which
in turn played an important role in the development of other programmable
machines, such as an early version of digital compiler used by IBM to develop the
modern-day computer.
 3. Douglas Engelbart – he invented computer mouse. Without him, it is
impossible to click and open anything from the computer because computer has
no touch screen mouse. He was an American engineer and inventor, and an early
computer and Internet pioneer.
 4. Robert Metcalfe – he invented computer networks; internet. Without him, we
can no longer communicate with others from far away, we can no longer explore
things, and we can no longer try some things. With the use of internet, it is easy
for us to explore things online rather than exploring them on our own and spend a
lot of time and effort. He is an engineer and entrepreneur from the United States
who helped pioneer the Internet starting in 1970. He co-invented Ethernet, co-
founded 3Com and formulated Metcalfe's law, which describes the effect of a
telecommunications network.
 5. Tim Berners-Lee – he invented the World Wide Web or commonly known as
Web. Without him, it is not possible to go to some website to see documents,
share files and visit some website or even to download an application. He is an
English computer scientist best known as the inventor of the World Wide Web.
He is a Professorial Fellow of Computer Science at the University of Oxford and
a professor at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology.

2. Among the intellectual (scientific) revolutions known in history, select one (1) that you
think is most related to your course and explain how this revolution defined the field of
your course today.
 Information – this was the era which technology has been prevalent. It is also
known as the Computer Age that has brought so much change on how we are
living today. With this intellectual revolution, I can say that this is really related to
my course because nowadays, technology becomes a necessity. This is the most
related to my course because a lot of our skills are needed to apply online. With
the flexible learning that is happening today, Accountancy skills is now being
applied in some online software like Xero. With this revolution, my course, BS
Accountancy, makes it easier to apply the knowledge and skills we have for our
dream profession. This intellectual revolution helps us to apply the knowledge we
have, improve our skills and explore new things that are related to our course. In
line with this, I can say that this is really beneficial to my course as an
Accountancy student that I can really explore things on my own.
