MENTAL WORKLOAD

4.1 Tutorial Objectives

There are several objectives to be achieved in this practicum, includes:
1. Perform measurements and analyze the results of mental workload of
barbershop’s workers.
2. Calculate the amount of product value, total WWL, and average WWL.
3. Perform the classification of mental workload.
4. Compare the values of each indicator.

4.2 Tutorial Task

There are several tasks to be done in this practicum, includes:
1. Determine the location for the barbershop.
2. Interview about the workers’ personal data.
3. Measure the mental workload of the workers by using the weighted and
rating questionnaire.
4. Write down the result of mental workload questionnaire.
5. Know and analyze the output result of the WWL.
6. Make the conclusion based on tutorial result.

a. First Operator
The first operator is the last order of the workers when the others
workers are busy cutting hair, she is the one will do cutting hair. She is
the one that has many idle time.
b. Second Operator
The second operator is the second order of workers who do cutting hair,
if the first order workers busy doing the work.
c. Third Operator
The third operator is the first order of workers who do cutting or can be
said as the busiest worker of all.

operator is the youngest of all, so she feels like to stick around and help
everyone around her. And everyone expects her to help them out. So, it
feels like her responsible to help other out. Her physical demand is very
high and it is the highest indicator on her mental workload.
4.5.2Operator Analysis 1
The mental workload of first operator is 35.33, it is classified as
kinda high mental workload. The highest indicator is effort, because she
wants to get it perfectly done she need to put up a good hard work on it. The
second indicator is the physical demand because she needs to walk around
while cutting customer’s hair.
4.5.3Operator Analysis 2
The mental workload of second operator is 56.67, it is classified
as high mental workload. Her physical demand score reach into 400 score, it
is the highest indicator. Because she is the youngest worker in there, she
needs to stick around a lot like helping others workers. So her mobility is
very high.
4.5.4Operator Analysis 3
The mental workload of third operator is 37.33, is is classified
as kinda high mental workload. Her highest indication of mental workload is
effort just like the first operator. Because she handles many customers per
day and still need to meet customer’s expectations, the operator need to put
up good work in doing the cutting hair.
4.5.5Overall Analysis
From the analysis results obtained if the first operator has a
rather high mental workload. The highest mental workload indicator for the
operator 1 is effort, where he wants to maximize the results of her work. The
second highest indicator is physical demand. The score WWL of thr first
operator is 35,33. In the second operator, she has a high mental workload. it
can be seen from the score WWL of the second operator is 56,67. The
highest indicator mental workload of the second operator is physical
demand. For the third operator, she has a rather high mental workload. the
mental workload indicator of the operator 3 is same as the first operator. She
has score of WWL range 37,33. From the analysis results obtained, it can be
International Program
Odd2019/2020

concluded if the one with the highest mental workload is the second
operator. This is because the second operator has the highest score of WWL.
4.5.6Recommendation
From the results of the analysis that has been done, control of
mental workload can be done by balancing the amount of workload demands
with the maximum capacity of mental workloads owned so that there is no
such large difference between the two. That is because everyone has
different work abilities. The work ability of a worker is different from other
workers and it depends on the condition of the skill level, physical fitness,
nutritional condition, sex, age, and body size of each worker (Tarwaka et.
Al., 2004). Working hours must also be adjusted both to the demands of
duties and responsibilities outside of work. From interviews conducted by
workers, they claimed that every day they go to work from morning to
evening. Even though it's Sunday, the workers still go to work. This can
make the workers depressed and feel bored. One thing that can be done is to
provide additional holidays. In addition, it can also relax together with other
workers so as to strengthen relations between workers. Operator 2 is the
youngest operator in the salon. therefore, operator 2 often helps other
workers. Even though he has the youngest age, but he should still look at his
own condition first. Don't because he is the youngest worker so he has the
most work.

4.6 Conclusion
From the results of the analysis, several conclusions have been obtained, namely:
1. The mental workload can be measured by subjective perception of workers so
that the results of measurements of mental workload obtained are not always
the same as an objective measurement of someone.
2. The level of a person's mental workload can be interpreted by the mental
workload score obtained from the average calculation Weighted Workload
(WWL).
3. High mental workload can affect one's work performance to be less efficient
and effective, besides mental workload also affects the physical, mental, and
social environment of the person.

4. NASA-TLX indicator factors that influence the weighting and rating of each
person differ according to the demands of the workload they experience and
the maximum capacity of the workload they have.
