Laboratory Report 5
Reference Activity/Objective:
Original in Syllabus:
Activity 7-2: Visit to Green Roof Garden in the Civil Engineering building at UNIBE. Students will be present with the
research data and findings from the water capture project on-site to get a better understanding on soil cover/type impacts on
infiltration volumes.
Updated Objective:
Activity 7-2: Review the concepts that drive land use and land cover influence in the generation and storage of infiltration
volumes. This, by reviewing GIS available resources and curve number (CN) tables according to the Technical Reference
Paper, TR-55, by the Soil Conservation Service (SCS). Further, a practical exercise on CN and infiltration
storage/precipitation excess calculation is presented in order to be establish a sound methodology for accounting for
infiltration volumes.
Based on the practical exercise displayed in Lab Session 5, and the content discussed based on the available GIS
resources, respond to the following question and proposed practical exercise:
A. Based on the discussions so far, and the factors affecting infiltration, list your top 3 factors that enable the
infiltrationprocess:
2. Soil Texture because water moves more quickly with big pores.
B. Estimate the total storage and precipitation excess generated by a precipitation event of 7 inches, over an
800 acres watershed. Hydrologic group distribution is 20% - A, 45% - B, and 35% - C. Antecedent humidity
condition is II, and the land distribution is displayed below. Use the Curve Number method and TR-55 to
assign the correspondent CN values:
3.46+3.8=7.2inches.
