Alike / Not Alike

By Joe Lightfoot, Pastor of Adult Ministries
A number of tests like the ACT and the SAT have questions in
which the test taker is required to identify objects or words from
a group that are alike or not alike. For example, in this group of
numbers: 4, 6, 9, 10, 14, and 18, the number 9 is not like the other
numbers as they are all even numbers.
So here is one for you: What do Scott Longstreet, Bob Sorensen
and Terry Stark have in common? How are these three men alike?
All three: are men, live in Iowa, are married, have children,
are members of First Federated Church…Those are the easy ones.
All three men are also: Elders of FFC, have extensive experience
in discipling / mentoring other men, and all three have agreed
to share some of their experiences at the FFC men’s retreat

Shawn Johnson Wins NOTES
Gold Medal Sunday, August 24, 2008
8:00AM & 10:45AM | Pastor Mike Rose
By Joe Lightfoot, Pastor of Adult Ministries Step Away from the Edge: Financial Fall Out
This past week Shawn Johnson,
the dynamic gymnast from West Des
Moines, won an Olympic Gold Medal.
Throughout the competitions, com-
mentators have talked regularly about
the discipline required to practice
a specific skill thousands of times
before an athlete perfects it.
More than a century ago, Horace
Mann, often considered the father
of American public education, raised the value of disciplined
routine as he set out to reform American education. Mann said,
“Habit is a cable; we weave a thread of it each day, and at last we
cannot break it.”
What Olympic champions know…what educational pioneers
know…is what you need to know as a parent…proper habits,
disciplined routines, and establishing boundaries are critical to
who your child will be when he/she leaves your home.
As Pastor Mike instructed last week, the edge of the moral
abyss is creeping into our homes and our lives. Your respon-
sibility as a parent is to help your child establish those habits,
routines, and boundaries that will serve him / her throughout a
lifetime.
The church is here to equip you and
support you as you do this. It is your
responsibility, as Proverbs 22:6 tells to
point your kids in the right direction
so when they’re old they won’t be
lost (MSG). God has given you the
responsibility and privilege of training
your child to be a righteous member
of God’s kingdom and a productive
member of society.
In order to equip you to do this, we are offering two special
classes to help you develop the ability to guide your child/chil-
dren in establishing the habits and boundaries that will help
them lead godly lives. Page seven has details of these Sunday
morning and Wednesday evening electives. Take advantage of
these opportunities to grow in your ability to lead your children

child dies every five
seconds of starvation or malnutrition related disease. So being
hungry for a few hours is nothing compared with the millions of
people around the world who wake up every day wondering if
they’ll have anything to eat.
You can change this reality. We will be participating in Meals
from the Heartland September 1–9 at HyVee Hall in downtown
Des Moines.
In this serving effort, teams of 8–10 people will join together
to package over 3 million life-sustaining meals that will be
delivered to starving and malnourished children in Belize, El
Salvador, Guyana, Haiti, Jamaica and Nicaragua.
You can help with an investment of only 2½ hours.
To learn more, come skip lunch with us today, 12:15–1:15PM,
in Fellowship Hall. You’ll get a little taste (literally) of what we’ll
be doing and you’ll have an opportunity to sign up for a team.
