Use a Professional Cover Letter


Header 
 
Yup, the basics first. The header of every professional cover letter for a job
application should include the following:
 

Your name
Your phone number
Your email address
The date
The name of the hiring manager and their professional title
The name and address of the company to which you’re applying

 
Optionally, you can add:
 

Your professional title


Your home address
Links to your professional websites
Your social media accounts (applicable only for LinkedIn and Twitter)
Your city of residence (it’s not mandatory but adds a professional touch—

Just remember to keep it professional:
 

Use an email address from a respected provider—that means either Gmail or


your personal domain (if you have one.)
Your email address should only include your first and last name—
sexyvanessa@gmail.com or johnlikesgoats@hotmail.com will be deal-breakers.

Make sure your contact information is consistent across your resume, cover

In the first sentence, show that you’re an expert in your field. But don’t keep on
bragging. The remaining part of your cover letter’s second paragraph should be all
about how your previous experiences will help your future employer press ahead

Make Your O er in the Closing

Two worst cover letter mistakes you can make in the final paragraph are:
 
1. Coming o needy - focusing on how much you want the job, not on what you
have to o er.
2. Repeating the cliched phrase “Thank you for your consideration and your
time.”

Use the Right Formal Closing


 
Once you’ve written the body of your cover letter, you just need to put a formal
closing at the very end.
 
Write “sincerely” and follow it with your full name. Adding your handwritten
signature is optional, but it’s recommended for more formal cover letters.

Add the Postscript: A Great Cover

All of the above sections are must-haves in a good cover letter format.
 
But there’s one special trick you can use:
 
The postscript.
 
Why is the “P.S.” so important?
 
Because it’s like a magnet for the hiring manager’s eyes. It screams: “you cannot miss
this information.”
 
Use the postscript to tell the hiring manager about something impressive about your
career (1), even if it’s not strictly related to the job opening.
 
And say that you’d be happy to provide them with more details (2) if they find it
interesting.

I didn't read the rest of the article because the sample you show at
the top is the WORST cover letter I've ever read in my life. It
screams ME, ME, ME and ME! It doesn't say anything about how
you will solve the problems of the person reading it. You people
might want to brush up on how to write persuasive sales copy, and
reading How To Win Friends and Influence People wouldn't hurt
either.

needs of the company being applied to and helps to solve
those problems (needs).

The example might make it a bit unclear, but we suggest that


you write a cover letter in a symbiotic way. What I mean by
this is to make one paragraph about why the company is a
perfect fit for you, while making another paragraph about why
you are a good match for the company.

Personally i wrote many letters to different companies and
none was accepted. Most of which I didn't write headings for
the letters, don't think if that was my downfall. And the few i
made headings wasn't Succesful either. What could be the

Great post on how to write a cover letter! I especially value the part
where you show how to incorporate exact phrases used in a job
posting/job description in the cover letter itself, much as you do in
your excellent resume tailoring post. The job you chose, while IT-
related, was more of a sales and marketing role. What that means it
is pretty easy to come up with eye-catching percentages and
statistics for a position that lives and dies by such things.

I'd love to see a cover letter example for a web developer, coder, or
other such non-marketing, non-sales, non-finance job. How do we
write that cover letter when the job is for programming, or web
development, or network administration?

As regards quantifying your achievements, I know, it might


seem hard for some positions. But there are some strategies
you can use if you struggle to fit numbers into your resume:
1. SCALE: How many people were on your team? How many
employees have you supervised or trained? How large were
the budgets you’ve handled?
2. FREQUENCY: How much work were you able to complete
in a given period of time? How often did you perform certain
tasks?
3. RANGE: Can’t figure out the exact number? Estimate.

Hello there! Great question!

Depending on which region you're located in, it may be


necessary to include a photo on your resume.

This is mostly common in places like Europe, but is


considered a deal breaker in places like Canada or the
United States, where strong anti-discrimination laws are in
place.

Generally speaking, you'll want to skip adding a photo to your


cover letter, no matter which region you're in.

I have worked in the advertising industry for over 20 years and I am
looking to change over to a corporate marketing role. The agency
side has a employment cycle at one firm of 2-4 years. It is the nature
of the beast. As such there are gaps in employment in my resume.
Do I address those gaps in my cover letter to provide context as to
why they see them and should I use them to my advantage as part
of the rationale for wanting to change from an agency role to a
corporate marketing role, e.g. more stability. Look forward to hearing

You should generally try to limit your explanation to this


career gap to a minimum on your cover letter.

That being said, both are great choices, and maybe a


combination of the two would be the best way to go. You can
also mention any courses or projects you worked on during
your time off, as this could bolster your chances when making
your career transition.

Before you get started on your resume and cover letter, you
may want to put together one other package: a portfolio.

This will allow you to feature your previous designs so that


your employer can know what you're capable of.

Once you have your portfolio in order, highlight your


specializations from your entrepreneurial days. Did you have
a knack for certain fabrics? What sort of influences did you
have? Did you have any large shows or productions?

Highlight all of your most impressive achievements, and you'll


be off to a good start.

When it comes to your cover letter, it's important to also


mention your motivations, but other than that, just follow the
steps outlined in this article, and you'll be good to go.

Thank you, your article (and all tips on this site) are most useful.
Every time I need to improve something on my application, I come
back.
I have a question still : I am changing careers (from Project
Manager) to Marketing ( trying to apply for Data Insights Analyst)
with quite an uneven carrer path (gaps and all). Your article
concentrates on cases when the candidate completelly matches
requirements and I am sure it is 80% of all cases. But in my case, I
really do not know what to write, what to demonstrate and how
honest should I be about the situation. I would choose not to send
the covering letter at all, but in quite a few cases it is asked for (I live
in Switzerland).

If you are changing careers, the cover letter is the last thing
you'll want to worry about.

The first thing you'll need to do, is adjust your resume, and
tailor it to the job you'd like to get.

Start by making a knockout resume objective. It'll help


recruiters see who you are, what you've done, and what you
can bring to the table at your new job.

Once you've done that, you'll want to start listing any relevant
work experience, skills, courses, programs, certifications,
pretty much anything you can think of that will give you some
sort of an advantage against other candidates.

After all of that has been written out, and your resume is
ready to take the Data Insights industry by storm, you'll finally
be ready to write your cover letter.

Here is where you can highlight your most impressive skills,


and explain why they'll be so useful at your new job.

Remember that resume objective I mentioned earlier? Well, if

Hi Michael! Thank you for the AWESOME tips. I am applying to a
company that is giving me the option to upload a resume or use my
LinkedIn. Which one do you think I should do? My LinkedIn profile is
the most up to date "resume" I have except for the fact I have not
listed any projects on there.

Hey there,

Thanks for writing in! That's a really great question!

Michael is currently away on vacation, but I'll be happy to


help by offering my opinion. :)

Ultimately the choice is up to you. It would be best to try and


anticipate which option the company would prefer.

If the company is more modern, the LinkedIn option could be


quite beneficial. Just make sure your profile is fully updated
and professional.

It's not too late to add your projects to LinkedIn, so if you can
update your profile in time, it may work in your favor.

I have read articles stating that cover letters are becoming a dying
breed, and more employers are moving away from that. Cover letters
create more work, and are no longer productive, and efficient
methods used in today's job market.

Is this true and becoming the new trend?

Hey there Chris! Great question!

The answer will vary from employer to employer.

I've heard that smaller and younger companies like start-ups


don't really bother with the cover letter formula, considering it
outdated.

On the other hand, some of those companies also don't put a


ton of stock in resumes and try to find candidates based on
word of mouth referrals, or from their portfolios (an
increasingly common substitute for the conventional resume).

Does that mean you shouldn't write a resume? Heck no!

You should have both a resume, a cover letter, and if you


need it, a portfolio too!

You might not use everything for every job application, but if
your cover letter already has a decent template you've
created, and you're applying at a large company with a more
conservative approach to hiring, then you'll be able to submit
both your resume and cover letter without going into a
scramble.

Always be prepared for anything, because no two employers


are exactly alike. If one of them has the dream job you've
been looking for, then you want to have your arsenal fully
equipped and ready!

Thank you guys for great articles! Once I start reading I can't stop
and I'm forever cringing at all the disgusting resumes and cover
letters I've sent before... Just a question; I sent my resume to a
company that I'd love to work for without them having an open
position. Now that I know how much better I could've done, is there
any chance of redemption? How long should I wait before sending
another email with a better cover letter and a better resume or
should I now wait for them to actually have a position open before
applying again?

Hi there Lindi,

Cringing at your old resumes is bound to happen! It's like


cringing at your awkward high school years when you're an
adult. It's all part of growing, and getting better at something.

When it comes to sending in your resume to a company


without an open position, the best thing to do is give the
employer a couple months to breathe.

I would say sending your updated resume in after 2 or 3


months should do the trick, and will allow you to improve your
resume in the meantime. The added benefit is that if HR
remembers your first resume, they will notice the
improvement in your second one, which gets you off to a
much better start!
