On a day in the orchard where the cuckoo “koos”………….

This is a padham wherein a young maiden enamored of a particular god indulges in

fanciful thoughts about her beloved god. Usually in a padham the damsel either
sends an epistle through her friend to the god in question describing her anguish
of separation from her beloved lord and asking him to visit her again or describes
the imaginary dalliance she had with him to a pet parrot or deer. It may take other
variations of this format too. In this particular song the maiden just describes
her imaginary experience.

It is an orchard replete with a variety of flora, ponds, and birds. The birds on
the treetops are chirping in different tones, either calling their mates or singing
to themselves. There is a tiny cuckoo singing with a full-throated melodious sound.
There he (lord Murugan) arrives suddenly on his mount---a beautiful peacock with
multi-colored plumage. A beautiful young damsel witnesses that incident.  Her
imagination takes  flight indulging in amorous thoughts. Let us see what it
unfolds.

She sees a golden face flashing a beautiful smile. He utters something which falls
in her ears like manna. And in a jiffy he suddenly disappeared like a lightning.
She is disappointed but her reverie continues. What she relishes is this: She
remembers seeing a crisp, cool, and beautiful flower with intoxicating fragrance.
She sees a variety of hues in the sky and the sea. She hears the sweet sound of
VeeNA (Indian lute) being plucked. And her solitude (with nothing to disturb it) at
that moment is so sweet!

Her reverie ends and she realizes that he (her lover) is gone. But she consoles
herself that he (the valorous Murugan who wields a spear) will be back. He, the
consort of VaLLi (his perennial consort), will not forget her. He, with immense
grace, will shower it on her.  At least, that is her conviction. With such a proud
thought her despair departs and she is once again cheerful.

Meaning:

Pallavi:  One day in an orchard where a cuckoo sings he (lord Murugan) arrived on a
huge peacock from nowhere.

Anpallavi: He had a golden face with a lovely smile. He spoke certain words which
are like manna from heaven. Then he disappeared as fast as he came.

CaraNam 1: I noticed a new fragrance from the cool flower. The sea and the sky
displayed numerous hues. The sweet sound from the lute was delectable. I enjoyed
the solitude.

CaraNam 2: The valorous Murugan will return wielding his spear. He (consort of
VaLLi) will never forget me. He, with his immense grace, will shower it on me. That
thought makes me forget my despair (viz., that he is gone from the scene now).

About the Composer:  The composer, R. Krishnamurthy, (popularly known as Kalki) in

composing the song, has set up a background that is conducive for amorous thoughts,
namely a flower garden with bees humming all around. The addition of bees, cuckoos,
a pond, and gentle breeze add to the environment that sends a young maiden into
thoughts of love—in this case a divine one.

Kalki Krishnamurthy (1899-1954), was born in Puttamangalam in Thanjavur district.

He was a true-blooded patriot who joined the freedom struggle at Gandhi’s call. He
left school to join the non-cooperation movement and went to prison three times
during a span of 20 years.
He had a natural talent for writing. He started writing for magazines in 1923, soon
after coming from his first stay in prison. He was influenced by Rajaji, and
Sadasivam (co-founder of Kalki magazine) in political and social beliefs and by
Thiru Vi Ka on the literary front. His writings covered history, art, culture,
society, and everything in between. He had a passion for Thamizh and Thamizh music
in particular. He was one of the founders of the Thamizh isai movement in the
1940s.

He edited Ananda Vikatan, the magazine founded by S. S. Vasan, for nine years and
wrote several serial novels for the magazine in addition to short stories, and
other feature articles. He started the magazine ‘Kalki’ in association with
Sadasivam in 1941. He wrote several novels, short stories, music and dance reviews.
His three historical novels, Parthibhan Kanavu, Sivakamiyin Sabhatham, and Ponniyin
Selvan, are considered classics by many.

Several of his novels were made into movies: among them Thyaga Bhoomi and
Parthibhan Kanavu are noteworthy. He also wrote the script and lyrics for the
Thamizh movie Meera, which starred M. S. Subbulakshmi.

Several years ago a book titled “Amarar Kalki PADalgaL”, containing 35 of the songs
written by Kalki was published. Song writing was the best kept secret of Kalki
since he was more known for his novels and humorous articles than poetry. Many of
his songs were popularized by the famous female trio Carnatic singers, MS, MLV, and
DKP.

Some other Kalki’s songs that are quite popular are: tavamum palittadammA
(featuring attainment of Indian independence), deivattamizh, mAlaippozhudinilE
(rAgamAlikai), vaNDADum sOlai tanilE (harikAmbOji), and kAtrinilE varum gItam
(sindhu bhairavi) which featured in the movie Meera.
