DO ROCKS LAST FOREVER?

WHAT YOU NEED?


 3 or 4 different rocks
 Magnifying glass
 3 or 4 Ziploc bags
 Hammer
 Pencil

WHAT TO DO?
A. Clean the rock samples by washing them

B. Dry them after washing

C. Label the rocks from 1 to 4.

D. Examine each rock using magnifying glass.

E. Put the rocks inside he Ziploc bag

F. Break the rocks into 2 or 3 pieces by hammering

G. Investigate the insides of the rocks.

H. Scratch the exposed surface and the inside surface of the rock.

WHAT HAPPENED?
1. What is the color of the clean rock?
2. How will you describe the inner surface and the outer surface of the rocks?
3. Are the surfaces equally hard? If not, why?
4. Did you notice other things on the rocks?

WHAT NOW?
1. How will you relate the effects of environmental conditions to the characteristics of rocks?
2. What are those environmental factors that effect the changed conditions of rocks?
FOLDING AND FAULTING
OBJECTIVE: To determine what causes layers of rocks in the earth`s crust to crumple and break.
WHAT YOU NEED?
Molding clay, piece of paper, 2 blocks of wood, ruler

PART 1
WHAT TO DO?

A. Place molding clay on top of a piece of paper. Flatten the molding clay.
B. Cut the clay into 8 strips. Each strip should be 1cm thick, 3 cm wide and 12 cm long.
C. Put the first 4 strips over one another.
D. Place the block of wood at the both ends of the clay
E. Slowly push the blocks toward each other compressing the clay that is in between.

WHAT HAPPENED?
1. What happened to the clay strips as they were pushed from opposite ends?
2. Draw the structure formed when the clay strip was pushed from opposite ends
3. What happened to the length of the clay strips before and after pushing?

WHAT NOW?
1. What does the strip of clay represent?
2. Why did the strip of clay behave that way?
3. How will you describe the structure formed after the ends were pushed together?
4. In nature what geologic feature do you think is formed in the same manner?

PART 2
WHAT TO DO?
A. Put the remaining 4 strips of clay on top of the other.
B. Pull he strips apart.

WHAT HAPPENED?
1. What did you observe on the clay strip when you pull it apart?

WHAT NOW?
1. How did the strip of clay behave when it was pulled apart?
2. What geological structure was formed after pulling the strip apart?
