Introducing Photobook PRO

1. Products

Photobook PRO allows to realize the following products (by display order on the inter-
face):
1. Photobook
2. Photobook without cover
3. Calendar
4. Greeting card
5. Wedding album pages
6. Back to Back
7. Triptych
8. 1 sheet central score
9. 1 sheet lateral score
10. 1 sheet triptych scoring

1.1. Photo Album

This product uses all the functionalities of Photobook PRO. It is made up of scored sheets
folded at the center, cased in, and enveloped by the cover made up of a photo sheet
longer than the album sheets. The finishing of the album consists in trimming the right
side of 2.5 mm and the extremities of 1.5 mm. Its cycle is detailed further.

Formats
- Maximum number of pages:
15 (cover included) for sheet width <= 203 mm
10 (cover included) for sheet width between 203 and 305.
Planned evolution to a maximum of 20 sheets.
- Sheets length:
254 mm minimum, 460 mm maximum (for the cover), 445 mm for sheets of 10 sheets
albums (see further). Finished books have a width of 127-2.5=124.5 mm minimum and
445-2.5=442.5 mm maximum.
- Sheets width:
They correspond to the standard widths of photo paper: 89, 102, 114, 127, 152, 178, 203,
210, 240, 254, 279, 305

Calculation of the cover length

The cover must be longer than the other sheets to allow to bind the album. The calcula-
tion is made as follows:
CoverLength - SheetLength = Max(BindingMin, A.NbSheets + B)
with:
Technical Manual - Photobook PRO V2

NbSheets = Number of sheets of the album including cover sheet

BindingMin = 6
A = 1 for Lux paper (Royal) and A = 0.9 for standard paper (edge)
B = 0.5

6 060 677 728 A 03/2008

Technical Manual -

Note: in the Imaxel applications, the A value is set. By default, 1 mm will be used for all the paper
types.
Examples:
5 sheet album: the cover must be longer of Max(6 , 1x5+1) = 6 mm
15 sheet album: the cover must be longer of Max(6 , 1x15+1) = 16 mm

1.2. Photo Album without cover

Same characteristics as the photo album. The difference is the interface message that
proposes to end the product at any moment (>:abort now), which ejects the product at
any moment before putting the cover. This product can be stuck later into a stiff cover.

1.3. Calendar

Same characteristics as the photo album. The differences are:

- No third score (making the opening of the album's binding easier)
- The distance between the glue and the binding is 20 mm. This allows a punch to drill
outside the glue.
This product should be then trimmed with the ream cutter at the level of the binding (in
order to separate the pages) and then punched and bound by a wormed binding. Typical
application: spiral bound calendars.

1.4. Greeting card

This product scores at the middle and then glues two sheets back to back. The product
should be retrieved from the plate each time. If the second sheet is too short or 2 mm too
long, it is rejected by Photobook PRO.

Formats
Sheet length: 127 mm minimum, 460 mm maximum
Sheet width: same as photo album

1.5. Wedding album pages

Same formats as above. 5 scores are done 20 mm from the edge and spaced out by 5
mm. Recto scores are shifted 1 mm from verso scores to limit thickness increasing. There
is no glue under the scores. This product is intended to be punched and bound between
two stiff covers of "Fotobuck" type.
The parameter "NombreRainures" (by default 5) allows to set the number of scores.
The parameter "DistanceBordRainure" (by default 20 mm) allows to set the distance be-
tween the first score and the sheet edge.
The parameter "DistanceEntreRainures" (by default 5 mm) allows to set the distance
between each score.
Technical Manual - Photobook PRO V2

1.6. Back to Back

Same formats as above. Back to back gluing of two sheets.

060 677 728 A 03/2008 7

- Technical Manual

1.7. Triptych

Same formats as above. Two scores positioned 1/3 and 2/3 of the sheet length.
The parameters "TryptiqueCoef1" and "TryptiqueCoef2" (by default 0.333 and 0.666) allow
to set the position of the two scores : 0,333 corresponds to the position of the first score and
0.666 to the position of the second one : in this case, 33.3% (1/3) from the sheet edge for
the first score, and 66.6% (2/3) from the sheet edge for the second one.
These two parameters can be modified to suit the type of triptych to be created.

1.8. Others

Same formats as above. The three last products ("1 sheet central score", "1 sheet lateral
score" and "1 sheet triptych scoring") correspond to simple sheet scoring. Each sheet is
inserted and returned by the machine through its top. This allows to speed up the production
pace.

2. Paper types

The papers usable with Photobook PRO are mainly photo papers of all types (silver and
thermal). The less thick ones correspond to "standard" channels and the more thick ones to
"LUX" channels (See "Channels"). Below is a classification of the most common papers:

Standard channels "LUX" channels

Kodak edge Kodak Royal
FUJI Crystal Archive FIJI Crystal Archive Supreme
FUJI thin special album (new) Thermal paper

Other paper types can be used, in return for preliminary trials. The standard paper (80 g/m²)
seems to be the minimum that the machine can position as first sheet (to make a "back to
back" type product like greeting card with possible writing on verso). Nevertheless, this thick-
ness should not be used to be glued. Indeed, because it is too soft, it would follow the glue
band and surely cause a paper jamming.

3. The glue

The used glue is a transfer technology with acrylic base. It is not a double glue line. The 50
μm thick glue is laid on a silicon paper support winded on a 85 mm diameter carton core.
The winded length is 100 m for a 160 mm resulting outer diameter. A 1.3 m glueless leader
begins the roll to facilitate the positioning of the new roll in the magazine.
The laying of the glue film is made by pressure on the paper, the film break is made by
lengthening break (tearing).

Important: the glue width is 8 mm smaller than the one of the sheet to glue. This allows to keep 4
mm of unglued surface on each book's edge (2.5 mm after ream cutting), which allows to have a "dry"
Technical Manual - Photobook PRO V2

and not sticky book edge. The adhesion is strong from the beginning and strengthens with time.

Glue roll Tag

The Tag is a new functionality of Photobook PRO V2. It is a card that contains data about
glue roll length (100 m for a new roll) and glue roll width (e.g.: 102 mm, 152 mm...). The
glue width is clearly indicated on the Tag.

Each Tag is associated to a particular glue roll. For example, the 0606775XX reference
corresponds to three 102-mm glue rolls, with each roll having its own Tag. The Tag is to
be placed in the dedicated support on the glue magazine. It must be associated to the
appropriate roll

Caution: never load the glue magazine with a roll that does not correspond to the Tag in place.
When the magazine is put into the machine, The Tag is located right under the "Tag
reader" which can read the data recorded on the Tag. The Tag reader works on the trans-
ponder principle: it emits a magnetic field that make the Tag's data readable.

Both informations recorded in the Tag are used in several purposes :

- allowing the machine to know which glue width has been loaded. This information can
then be compared to the paper width loaded by the user in order to prevent from using a
paper width larger or smaller than the glue roll. This way, jams can be avoided.
- the glue width can be used to calculate the whole surface of glue consumed in the mak-
ing of Photobook PRO products. The result is then stored in the machine as a statistic
available to the user.
- the remaining glue length is regularly updated in the Tag according to the amount of
glue consumed for the gluing of each page. By using this information, the diameter of the
rear receiving roll can be found to determine the voltage to apply on the glue motor that
winds up. So the voltage dynamically changes according to the consumed glue length
(i.e. the diameter of the receiving roll). The more consumed glue, the higher the voltage
Technical Manual - Photobook PRO V2

(more power is needed to wind up because the receiving roll is larger). In the same way,
the glue width (set for one roll) impacts the glue motor voltage. The wider the glue, the
higher the voltage.

060 677 728 A 03/2008 9

- Technical Manual

The glue roll width recorded in the Tag is a set value. However, the available glue length
(100 m on a new roll) is decreased at each gluing as follows:

(SheetLength/2 – DistanceAttaque_Colle – DistanceColle_Rainure)

For example, for a completed album of ten 203 mm wide sheets (2x(203+2.5) = 411 mm
long sheets), the used glue length is:
NbSheets x (SheetLength/2 – DistanceAttaque_Colle – DistanceColle_Rainure)
10 x (205.5 – 6 – 6) = 1935 mm
The number of albums that can be done with a glue roll is then:
100000/1935 = 51 namely approximately 50 albums per roll.

4. The ream cutter

The ream cutter is essential for the making of a photo book. For this reason, it is supplied
with each machine. The 2.5 mm cutting on the right edge is mandatory. The specified cut-
ting of the top and bottom edges is 1.5 mm.
Those dimensions are reached thanks to a positioning tool placed right against the ream
cutter. Depending on its orientation, this positioning tool ensures those dimensions. For
more details, refer to the installation notice of the ream cutter.

5. Safety

Magnetic switchs turn off the 24 V:

- two serial magnetic switchs for the cover presence;
- two serial magnetic switchs for the glue magazine's presence.
For analysis or maintenance operations, four magnets are required to work without cover
and glue magazine.

Software

Photobook PRO is an autonomous machine that does not require to be connected to a PC

to work. Even diagnosis and settings functions can be accessed from the embedded soft-
ware. Nevertheless, it is possible to connect a PC by serial linking. The DiagAlbum software
allows then to diagnose and set but is also the only way to download software updates.

1. Connection of a PC

A PC connection with Photobook PRO can be done through the PC serial port RS 232 and
the J3 connector of the Photobook PRO's board.

cessible parameters are different.
Technician password: 135234
User password: 3

3. Language selection

The languages pre-installed on the machine are: English, French, German, Spanish and
Italian.

English is selected by default. To change the language, go to "language option" in the

main menu, then select the language of your choice.

More languages are available: Japanese, Portuguese and Catalan. To get them, contact
Kis after sales service.

4. Firmware update

The firmware update can be done using DiagAlbum via a PC, or via Photobook PRO in-
terface by inserting a USB key containing the update into the dedicated slot of the frame.
For further details, refer to "Adjustment and management" chapter.

5. Statistics

Photobook PRO V2 is equipped with a memory that can stores statistics about machine
use. The recorded data are:
- the number of created products for each type; and
- the total surface of consumed glue.

These stats can be uploaded to a USB key by using Photobook PRO interface.
For further details, refer to "Adjustment and management" chapter.

2.2. Scoring

Once it has been measured, the sheet is positioned for the scoring.
Scoring in A for the first sheet.
Scoring in V for intermediary pages
AV scoring for the 2 scores of the binding and V scoring for the break (cover)
Technical Manual - Photobook PRO V2

AV scoring consists in making an A scoring and then a V scoring at the same place. This
allows to soften the score at this place. This is notably necessary during the making of the
cover for the phase where the AV scoring is pushed against the stacking of intermediary
pages scores.

Scoring

2.3. Gluing

Once the scoring has been completed, the sheet is positioned in gluing start. The gluer
roller (of the magazine) tilts against the paper, then against the sheet, driving the paper
with adhesive, which is taken back by the motor of the core.

Gluing start

Technical Manual - Photobook PRO V2

060 677 728 A 03/2008 15

- Technical Manual

The receiving roll is driven by a DC motor called glue motor.

The consumed glue length and the glue roll width are used within the following formula to
determine the high voltage to apply to the glue motor:

VoltageHIGH = [(Coef1VOLTAGE × GlueWidth) + Coef2VOLTAGE] × DOUTER_ROLL + Coef3VOLTAGE

The outer diameter of the receiving roll is a function of the consumed glue length.

Three coefficients can impact the voltage:

- TensionColleCoef1
- TensionColleCoef2
- TensionColleCoef3

The voltage values that can be applied to the glue motor are defined in the CPU board.
They are discrete values. The maximum applicable voltage is 22.98 V. If the theoretic
result is between two real values, the processor will use the closest one.
The applicable voltages (V) are the following:

6,78 12,9 14,99 18,62

9,68 13,31 15,72 19,35
10,41 14,04 16,44 20,07
11,13 14,76 17,67 22,98
Technical Manual - Photobook PRO V2

The low voltage is calculated as follows:

VoltageLOW = VoltageRatio × VoltageHIGH

The RatioTensions parameter allows to calculate the low voltage in relation to the high
voltage (the value is currently 0.4).

16 060 677 728 A 03/2008

Technical Manual -

The high voltage is only applied during the gluing phase (position 2).
Out of this phase, and especially in off position, the applied voltage is zero (motor is
switched off, no winding up), except in the following cases where the low voltage is ap-
plied:
- at the insertion of the glue magazine for X seconds (DelaisAbsorptionBoucleColleMs pa-
rameter which is currently 3.5 seconds) in order to take up the slack;
- at the machine start if a glue magazine is inserted for X seconds (DelaisAbsorptionBou-
cleColleMs parameter) in order to take up the possible slack;
- before the gluing start to take up the slack; and
- for a few seconds after the gluing end.

When the Tag data indicate that there is not enough glue for an additional sheet, the ma-
chine asks the user to replace the glue magazine before loading the next sheet. So the
machine is prevented from stopping while the gluing is in progress.

The glue emitting roll drives an encoding wheel. When there is no more glue, the emitting
roll does not turn any more and the encoding wheel is no longer driven. It allows to detect
the end of the roll if the tag data were not correctly synchronized.

At the end of the roll, the motors stop. A message [no more adhesive] is displayed.
Change the roll to continue. The album in progress can then be normally completed once
you have put the magazine back in place.

Note: A glue end detection parameter allows to avoid untimely "glue end" mesages. Actually, when
the glue magazine is inserted into the machine, a slack forms. It causes the absence of rotation of
the glue roll for a few centimeters.

2.4. Gluing on an already formed packet

The photo is positioned against the limit stop on the comb at the end of the plate. The
plate moves and the pressure on the big inox roller ensures a good gluing.
The plate's pressure is set with a 12 kg load.
After the appropriate gluing distance, the gluing roller of the magazine moves apart,
which breaks the glue film.
The advance movement continues until the score is right under the big pressure roller.

2.5. Backward movement and forming of the flap

The movement reverses so that the score passes under the folding roller. This movement
is done in several sequential steps precisely set so that the paper is never tight during
this phase. The movement continues until the flap is in front of the comb (just before the
movable teeth went up allowing the flap to pass under the comb). The end of the move-
ment consists in making the plate advance to its position of waiting for the next sheet.

2.6. Cover folding

The folder is only used to mark the fold of the binding.

Once the two scores of the binding are done (AV scores), the introducer advances and
the transfer remains blocked so that a loop is created under the folder. The folder then
pulls down and marks the fold on both scores. The introducer goes back and put it back
flat. This fold marking is necessary to push the cover correctly.

Loop of binding folding

2.7. Binding forcing

This step is the most risked one during the cycle of cover placing. Indeed, the scores of
the binding should be enough soft to do it correctly. If the back score is not correctly posi-
tioned right against the fold of the second sheet, the scorer should pass more times over
the binding scores (see set parameters).

Mechanical Modules
The machine is made up of several modules described in this section. Critical values are
specified for each one.

1. Frame

Levelling of frame (for manufacturing checking)

Checking of guide linearity and Checking in the field of the scorer

sides perpendicularity with gauge perpendicularity with right-angle
and stop of 0.3 mm cut sheet

1.1. Functions

• The frame guides the sheet inserted right against its reference side.
Technical Manual - Photobook PRO V2

• It ensures the perpendicularity of the rollers (notably the scorer) in relation to the guide.

060 677 728 A 03/2008 23

- Technical Manual

1.2. Settings

• When it is manufactured, the frame is checked before being mounted. Once the frame
has been levelled (thanks to back and front levellings), the linearity of the lateral guide
and the perpendicularity between the flanks are checked thanks to a special gauge.
When adjusting, the position of the frame is adjusted to reach this perpendicularity, then
the inlet plate is blocked to stiffen the upper part. During the trials of book realization, the
front feet are adjusted so that the inserted sheet constraintless tangents the guide when
arriving on the plate. When the adjustment is completed, two levels are then fixed on front
and back parts so that the fitter can set the machine in a good position.
• At the installation in the field, set the front and back feet to horizontally level the ma-
chine. Check the machine each time you see it to make sure that it has not been dis-
placed.
• In the field, you can check the scorer perpendicularity by manually inserting a blank
sheet previously cut and perfectly perpendicular (the machine should be off). When the
sheet passes under the scorer, observe the exceeding lead line: it should be regular on
its whole length (0.2 mm maximum variation). Check the levels before setting the feet
again.

2. Automatic feeder

2.1. Functions

• The automatic feeder was implemented to allow a syn-

chronized insertion of the sheets into the machine during
the making of an album without manual handling.
• The pile of the sheets composing the album is put in the
feeder loading zone except the first sheet that must be in-
serted manually.
• It has a sensor that allows to detect the presence of sheets

Nut 3

• The good functioning of the feeder is ensured by four settings: a steady setting and
three adjustable settings
• The steady setting uses two plastic spacers of different thicknesses placed between the
frame and the feeder motor unit. So the feeder's silicon roller is slightly inclined toward
the entry of the machine. This light inclination allows to keep the sheet well flattened
against the frame's lateral guide during the loading.
• Tighten the nut 1 (M4 nylock) until contact (the arm should be blocked). Then loosen
until the arm can rotate freely but without play.
• The nut 2 (M3 nylock) located between the frame and the feeder motor unit has an
impact on the parallelism of the feeder roller in relation to the inclined plane of the loading
zone. In rest position, both ends of the roller should be in contact with the plane. By act-
ing manually on the motor pinion in the working direction, the roller end that is the most
distant from the edge should slightly lift. For more details about this setting, refer to 5.3 of
"Adjustment" chapter.
• Loosen the nut 3 (M4 nylock) to free the arm. Adjust the position of the motor downward
for a perfect meshing. This adjustment must be redone each time that one of the previous
settings is modified.

Sheet width sensors

060 677 728 A 03/2008 25

- Technical Manual

3.1. Functions

• The inlet guide helps to flatten the sheet against the back guide.
• The sensor 1 detects the coming sheet and starts roller 1.
• The roller 1 grabs the sheet inserted by the operator or by the feeder and maintains it
flattened against the back guide thanks to the foam roller that is inclined toward the front.
• The relay sensor detects that the sheet has passed roller 1 and stops the automatic
feeder that is no more used to move the sheet.
• The width sensors allows to determine the width of the inserted sheet in order to check
that it matches the glue roll in use. If the sheet is not wide enough, the machine rejects it
and the gluing does not occur.
• The roller 2 as well as the sensors 1 and 2 measure the length of the inserted sheet.

3.2. Settings

• The Capteur1_Capteur2 (sensor 1 and 2) distance is calibrated at the same time as the
mm/step of roller 2 (MmParPas_Introducteur). See settings. The dismantling of a sensor
requires to calibrate Capteur1_Capteur2.
• The play between the inlet guide and the plate should be 0.8 mm (three or four sheets
of photo paper). Jam the sheets between the guide and the plate and tighten the screws.
• The belt should be correctly tightened. For this push relatively strongly the tightener at
the level of the bearing that faces the belt and tighten the screw. Check that the tightener
is perpendicular and sticks to the flank.
• Tightening of the pinions of roller 2: respect the orientation of the NOMEL CONTACT
washer (ref : N982 126 906), cone of bearing side. Apply normal threadlocker (blue) on
the screw without excess so that it does not get into the bearing when tightening (torque
4.2 Nm).

4. Transfer

Tightener Slide

Slide fastening screws (motor side) Slide fastening screws (opposite side)

4.1. Functions

• Holds and transports the sheet during the gluing and the transfer to the plate.
• The first roller holds the cover as it gets folded and ensures the accuracy of moving dur-
ing the gluing. The second roller is the gluer. The third one ensure the laying on the plate,
and notably pushes the cover right against the stop during the forming of the binding.

4.2. Settings

• The mm/step of the transfer do not require to be calibrated since the default value is
satisfactory.
• Belt and transfer: same as introducer.
• The transfer slide should be as close as possible to the roller but without making contact
in order not to impede its rotation. For this, loosen the four fastening screws on both sides
of the machine, move the slide as close as possible to the roller so that a sheet can fit
between the two, then retighten the screws.

- Technical Manual

5.1. Functions

• Makes the A, V and AV scores on the sheets. The A score is done with paper moving
back and the V score is done with paper moving forward. The AV score is an A score
superimposed of a V score.

5.2. Settings

• When you remount the rollers, you should synchronize the two rollers before blocking
the pinions (see picture of introducer). For this, jam an A4 paper sheet in the scorer in "V
score" position, blade of top roller in the score of the bottom roller, then block the gears
with conical fit, tightening torque 8 Nm, key of 10.
• Belt: same as introducer
• Zero setting. Indispensable after reassembling of the scorer. It is a software setting to
make the scorer plate parallel to the frame. In the field, a wedge can be used to assess
the parallelism. This setting does not require a great accuracy (+/- 1 mm).
• V score setting, A score setting. Indispensable after reassembling of the scorer. See
"settings".
• Check that the A scorer does not damage the gelatine. Switch off the machine, manu-
ally insert a 305 black photo sheet (gelatine up) under the scorer, handle with a 10 key
the scorer five times in a direction then five times in the other one to make an A score
and then a V score. If the gelatine is "grazed" so much so that you see the white layer,
retouch the edges of the score of the top roller with 000 waterproof abrasive paper, clean
then try again.

6. Folder

Zero position setting mark Sensor of zero position setting

Folder motor
Technical Manual - Photobook PRO V2

28 060 677 728 A 03/2008

Technical Manual -

6.1. Functions

• Folds the plies of cover binding. When the scores are done, the folder goes up, a loop
forms under the scorer that then lowers. When not operating, the folder is in zero position
(it is down and lets a 3 mm space between the frame bracing and the folder nose).

6.2. Settings

• Zero position: in zero position (formerly called guide position), the folder nose should be
at 3 mm from the bracing. For this, set the sensor position of zero position. Use the mark
line and align the edge direction and the line one. This line is done during manufacturing
by placing a 3 mm spacer.
• Belt: same as introducer
• Abrasion: the photo sheet rubs the folder in normal operating. If it causes abrasion, the
folder surface (in the area that is the closest to the sheet) should be polished. If the folder
is equipped with baize, then clean or replace the baize.

7. Gluer

Fastening screws
7.1. Functions

• Engages or disengages the gluer roller of the glue magazine against the second
transfer roller and so applies the glue film on the sheet. There are two stable positions:
ON and OFF.

7.2. Settings

• The OFF position must be stable. For this, incline the OFF position sensor downward
by using the fastening screws. Then switch off the machine to make sure that the gluer
remains in OFF position.
• Check that the toothed arm on motor side is in good contact with the toothed wheel of

8. Tray
Parallelism of comb and
pressure roller 4 clamping clips of the tray

Zero position sensor Setting of tray's spring

Location of stop pin

8.1. Functions

• Receives the forming sheets and packet. Its surface naturally adheres to the gelatine to
hold the first sheet stuck. Its comb allows to place the leading of the arriving sheets right
against the limit stop and so to realize a correct alignment of the book.
• Thanks to its to-and-from movement, it helps forming the flaps and the cover.

8.2. Settings

• The tray settings are done during the production with maintenance tools to facilitate the
setting up before tightening. Nevertheless, below are a few recommendations:
• To set the tray, insert a pin or a screw to block the lateral steady arm (return spring pin),
unscrew the four clamping pins. Tap the axis to free the clamps. Stick the plate against
the big presser roller (diameter 70) and the crusher roller (diameter 29) after having
centered it on both rollers to find the right balance. At the same time, center the plate so
that the comb's teeth are centered in the presser roller's throats and so that the comb is
parallel to the roller. Block the four clamping pins.
Technical Manual - Photobook PRO V2

• The position of the setting screw of the spring force should be determined so that a
12 kg weight pushes the plate to its half stroke.

30 060 677 728 A 03/2008

Technical Manual -

• The zero position sensor is used as a reference. The "ButeeMecaChariot_

PositionAttente" parameter allows to set the distance the tray should move away from the
sensor to reach the zero position.
• The belt tension can be modified by
inclining the motor. For this, revolve the
motor around the rotation axis.

Motor rotation axis

9. Glue tightener

Motor pinion Coder pinion Coder Glue motor

9.1. Functions

• Motorizes the core roll of empty glue ribbon to maintain a permanent tension of the
slack. Voltage is high during the gluing phase, and low or zero when out of this phase.
• A coder driven by the spool detects the roller ends.
• The coder also serves as brake to maintain the glue film up from the gluer.

9.2. Settings

• Brake setting: the force should be relatively weak. As

indication, the threading should not stick up from the
setting nut (as on the right picture).

9.3. Check
Technical Manual - Photobook PRO V2

• In case of problem with the glue ribbon, the voltage at the motor terminals can be
checked. Via DiagAlbum interface, set the voltage at the motor terminals and block the
pinion manually. The observed voltage should correspond. If not, the electronic board
must be replaced.

10. Glue magazine

Bearings on hub axis Anti-adhesive with points

Settings for end stop

Washer of glue position setting

10.1. Functions

• Receives the full and the empty glue rolls. Allows to quickly change the format by
changing the magazine.

10.2. Settings

• The geometry of the glue magazine must be adjusted to allow the two front copper
wheels to come freely on the end stop of the two guiding rails. In this position, the four
wheels should be on the guiding rails. If needed, force on its iron frame to do it.
• If the magazine is equipped with lateral guides for the positioning on the rails, adjust
them to have a 1 mm play on each side.
• Once the geometry is perfect, position the magazine on its end stop, set the magnets
fixed on the frame, then block them.

10.3. Check

• In operating mode, the magazine should position the glue film centered on the paper
width. There should be approximately 4 mm on each side. The analysis is made by
Technical Manual - Photobook PRO V2

"dismantling" a completed book. If one of the edge distances of the glue is smaller than
3 mm, you can then act on the glue magazine. By adding a washer (see above picture),
the glue is moved closer (washer equivalent) to the guide. By default, all magazines are
produced with a 1 mm washer, which suits to most cases.

32 060 677 728 A 03/2008

Technical Manual -

• Some of the first magazines delivered do not have bearings on hub axis. In this
case, and if the tool is worn down or is noisy, replace the two whole hubs with two with
bearings.
• Check the presence of anti-adhesive with points on the raising front handle (see
pictures).

Settings

Below is a list of settings done in manufacturing adjustments. Some of them can be used
as reference in the field in order to forget nothing during main interventions.

For a complete description of the setting procedures, refer to the "Adjustment and
management" chapter.

1. Manufacturing adjustments only

1- Software installation and default parameters

Enter serial number and manufacturing date. Save on PC.
2- High voltage check at glue tightener motor terminals
Check in DiagAlbum with blocked rotor that the voltage corresponds to the one applied.
3- Horizontality check
Adjust the back feet of the machine so that the back part is horizontal, level on the rails of
the glue magazine. Set in outline the front feet so that the frame is well-balanced on the
four feet.
4- Setting of scorer perpendicularity
Put the square on the aluminium roller (0.3 mm play at 20 cm). Adjust front feet. Let pass
a perpendicular sheet and check the perpendicularity of the scorer. If needed, readjust
the front feet.
5- Tightening of inlet plate / mounting of entry guide
Tighten the four screws by sticking the plate against the lateral guide and by pulling it
upwards to unstick it from the foam roller. Mount the inlet guide with a 0.8 mm play.
6- Scorer check
Insert a 305 black Royal sheet under the scorer and activate the top roller thanks to a 10
key (5 times on V side, then 5 times on A side). No white spur should appear. If needed,
retouch with wet or dry polishing paper.
7- Glue lever check
Put the glue magazine in place. Operate the lever via DiagAlbum. It should come in
contact with the front roller of the glue magazine. If needed, twist it towards the outside.
8- Check of glue OFF stable position
Via DiagAlbum, ask for glue OFF. The position should be stable. If needed, retouch the
glue OFF sensor.
9- Marking of magazine
Load the machine magazine in 203. Write the serial number of the machine on the
magazine's sticker.
Technical Manual - Photobook PRO V2

10- Setting of the folder guide position

Via DiagAlbum, set the folder in guide position. The guide should be slightly under the
mark line stuck on the flank. If needed, modify the sensor's position.

38 060 677 728 A 03/2008

Technical Manual -

2. In-the-field possible checks

1- Setting of the tray Zero position

Via DiagAlbum, set the tray's position at 170 mm from the U shape of the machine's
frame.
2- Setting of the scorer Zero position
Via DiagAlbum, set the scorer zero position so that the flat part of the scorer is parallel to
the paper path (use the dedicated tool). After setting, the male part of the top roller should
be orientated upwards and the setting value should be approximately 16 or 48. In case
you obtain 76, you should go back until the 16 setting.
3- C1-C2 distance
In DiagAlbum, enter the lengths of the long sheet and short sheet (approximately 383 and
303 mm) measured with 0.1 mm accuracy. Place a sheet on the lowered folder to retrieve
the sheets after measure. Check the setting by measuring again each sheet. The result
should be good at 0.2 mm. Otherwise, do the calibration again.
4- A and V scoring
Via DiagAlbum, enter the following configuration: glue width 203, channel 203 LUX,
sheets 203 x 303. Insert a first sheet downside and then a second one upside. Retrieve
the two stuck sheets and complete folding manually. Setting is well if the flaps are
aligned. The first sheet sets the A score, the second sheet sets the V score. To move the
score away from the attack edge, increase the setting value. Check the setting.
5- PC save / sticker
Save the settings results in the PC, then fill out the sticker with the indicated parameters.
Stick it inside the magazine location.
6- test album creation
- 305 Royal black album with four sheets.
Check the absence of white on the scores as well as the abrasion level on the pages.
- 203 Royal album with 15 sheets.
Check that the glue is at least at 2.5 mm from each edge. If needed, check and/or set the
magazine in 203.
- 305 Edge album with eight sheets.
For the last two albums, check that the flaps are from 0.1 mm minimum to 2 mm
maximum short on the whole length of the album. If needed, correct the corresponding
sets, then save again the parameters in the PC. Check that the sheets go down
constraintless along the lateral guide. If needed, progressively raise the front foot on the
side of the guide.

5.1. Adjusting the gluer's stroke end sensors

The gluer motor is checked by two sensors ("On" and "Off" positions).
A return spring makes the gluer move backwards to "On" position. The adjustment of the
"Off" position sensor should be done with accuracy so that the stop position of the motor is
Manuel Technique - Photobook PRO V2

as close as possible to the dead center.

The adjustment of the "Off" position should be done so that this position is stable as soon
as it is reached. It should not switch to "On" position (because of the magazine's return
spring), notably when the machine is stopped or when the machine is vibrating.

060 677 727 A 03/2008 41

- Manuel Technique

5.2. Adjusting the folder's "Guide" position

A sticker with a line is stuck onto the flank that faces the
folder. The adjustment consists in putting the top side
of the folder parallel to this line when the folder is in
"Guide" position (paper guiding during the transport).

Put the folder in "Zero" position to initialize it. Then move it into "Guide" position and check
the parallelism between the top side of the folder and the reference line on the sticker. If
the folder is not aligned with the reference line, loosen the two screws of the sensor and
adjust its position. Raise the sensor to raise the stop position of the folder. Tighten the
screws and follow again the checking procedure from the beginning.

5.3. Adjusting the feeder roller inclination

For a good functioning of the automatic feeder, the inclination of the feeder roller should
be adjusted with accuracy. Place a 102 Konica sheet under the roller. Make sure it is
against the lateral guide and the notched piece. Select "Feeder DC motor test" with the
button. Hit to move the sheet by about 2 cm, then stop the motor with the .button.
Leave the sheet under the roller and measure the play between the inclined plane and
the roller end that is the most distant from the lateral guide. Only one Konica sheet should
fit. Otherwise the M3 nylock nut located between the frame and the motor plate must be
adjusted. Unscrew to enlarge the play or screw to reduce it. Repeat the operation until the
right inclination is obtained.

To check the adjustment, carry out a test with 15 102 sheets and then with 10 305 sheets.
The sheets should not remain stuck in the notches and the roller should not skid.

At each loading, the sheets must be cut again with the ream cutter to remove marked edges and avoid any
potential jam.

The PVC stripes of the inclined plane can leave some marks on the last loaded sheet. If it
happens, move the involved stripe(s) away from both sides of the roller's thick part accord-
ing to the position of the mark.

6. Scorer and Tray Zero calibration

In this menu, you can adjust the reference position of the scorer and of the tray.

To do the calibration, proceed as follows:

Manuel Technique - Photobook PRO V2

1- Move the "Zero" position with the buttons;

2- Hit to apply and test the new position.

Hit to come back to Super User Mode menu.

42 060 677 727 A 03/2008

Manuel Technique -

Tip: during the scorer calibration, you can invert its position by pressing the button.

6.1. Adjusting the tray's "Zero" position

Measure with a steel rule the distance between the front part of the tray and the vertical
part of the U shape of the frame (indicated by the red arrow on the above picture).

When positioning the steel rule, make sure it is on the aluminium toothed plate at the end of the tray and
not on the black plastic part.

The measured dimension should be 170 mm (+/- 0,1).

Adjust the position until the right distance. Once the position has been reached, apply the
setting and make a test.

Note: by pressing the button (Apply & test), the setting is also saved.

Check that the dimension remains conform at the end of the adjustment. Otherwise do the
adjustment again.

6.2. Adjusting the scorer's "Zero" position

The goal of this adjustment is to put the flat part of the scorer roller parallel to the paper
path (as shown below). It also allows to direct the male part of the upper scorer roller to-
wards the top part of the machine.
Manuel Technique - Photobook PRO V2

Hold the steel rule vertically with its end well flattened against the flat part of the scorer
(as on the above picture). The steel rule must be perpendicular to the inclined plane of the
frame.

- Manuel Technique

Adjust by using the same method as for the tray's "Zero" position (see 6.1).

7. Introduction calibration

This menu helps you to calibrate the sheet measure process which occurs at the sheet
insertion.

Before the calibration, free the folder's return spring (as in

the green circle) and put a sheet to deflect the photos on
the folder down the scorer (as on the picture). The transfer
rollers should not disrupt the measuring.

Use two sample sheets previously measured with 0.1 mm accuracy:

- a long one of 383 mm; and
- a short one of 303 mm.

The sheets should have no folds and no dog-ears. If needed, roll the sheet before insertion to reduce its bow.
A well flat sheet will provide more accurate results.

To do the calibration, proceed as follows:

1- Enter the length of the long sheet (383.00) with the and buttons;
2- Hit to confirm;
3- Insert the long sheet into the loading zone with the right orientation
(measured side on the sensor's side);
4- Remove the sheet manually at the end of the transfer;
5- Follow the same procedure for the short sheet.

Save the calculated adjustment if the measures are out of range. Repeat the operation
until you get a result equal to the nominal value +/- 0.2 mm for both lengths.
Do not save the last calculation when the tolerance is reached.

After adjustment, put the folder's return spring back in place and remove the deflecting
sheet.

8. A and V score calibration

This menu allows to adjust the scoring position for a precise centering on the sheet.

The scorer makes two types of scoring:

Manuel Technique - Photobook PRO V2

- A scoring in relief called "A scoring"; and

- A hollowed scoring called "V scoring".

To do the adjustment, use two Royal sheets (303 mm long and 203 mm wide), and pro-
ceed as follows:

44 060 677 727 A 03/2008

Manuel Technique -

1- In Super User Mode, select "A and V score calibration" with the button;
2- When prompted, insert the first sheet into the machine, with the image facing down;
3- When prompted, insert the second sheet into the machine, with the image facing up;
4- Take both sheets stuck together for inspection:

• V-scored sheet (last inserted sheet, folded by the machine): correctly flap the page and
check the coincidence with the leading edge.
- If the flap is too short, it means that the score is too distant from the leading edge. You
should then enter a negative value equivalent to the distance that is required to reposition
the score so that the flap coincides.
- If the flap is too long, you should then enter a positive value.

To enter the value, use the and buttons. Then hit to confirm.

• A-scored sheet (first inserted sheet, not folded by the machine): fold the sheet manually
and proceed as for the V-scored sheet.

Repeat the adjusting procedure to make sure that the scorer is well centered.

9. Save stats on USB key

The USB port is designed for USB keys only. Never attempt to connect another type of device through this

3- In Super User Mode, select "Load parameters from USB";
4- The parameters are loaded, then Photobook PRO welcome screen appears.

12. Making of test albums

In order to finish the machine adjustment and to check that all settings are correct, carry
out the following test:

1- In the "Paper type/format selection" user menu, select the 203/8' Lux set;
2- Launch the making process and insert 203 Royal sheets;
3- While the sheets go down the plate, check that the sheet edge is in constant contact
with the lateral guide of the frame, especially close to the last red roller. If the edge is too
distant, raise the front foot on the side of the guide. Lower it if the edge forces against the
frame.
Lateral guide
Manuel Technique - Photobook PRO V2

Proceed with 1/2 turns maximum because the effect is important. Make at least two full
albums of 15 sheets (cover included) to check the proper adjustment of the feet;

46 060 677 727 A 03/2008

Manuel Technique -

4- Check the quality of the album, more particularly the coincidence of the flaps on the left
pages. It should not exceed an offset of 2.5 mm on the whole height of the album.

If the offset is greater than 2.5 mm, you should modify the "edge_adjustment" parameter
that is available in Super User Mode. Increase the value if the flap is too small, decrease it
if it is too large (use 0.1 mm steps). Make another album to check that the coincidence of
the flaps is conform. Also check the coincidence of the flaps at the top and at the bottom of
the album that should not exceed an offset of 2 mm;
5- Check that both scores of the cover do not damage the photo gelatine, that the album
pages are not scratched and that the overall aspect of the album is satisfactory.

Carry out the same test with 305 mm Edge paper.

Appendix: parameters

Parameters should be considered as constants except the green ones (which are specific
for each machine and set during adjustment) and the yellow ones (set parameters that
can be adjusted by the customer). Thus, a technician should not modify them without
being advised by an expert of Kis Engineering Department.

The table values appear as they are saved in the PC file. On the machine interface, they
are displayed in the real unit (in mm).
Example:

Capteur1_Rouleau2 21000000 0,00001mm

21000000 x 0,00001 = 210

The interface displays: Capteur1_Rouleau2 = 210 (the value is displayed in mm).

Output setting parameters of adjustment are written on a sticker within the glue
magazine.

In green: parameters set during the adjustment (see settings).

In yellow: set parameters (they evolve depending on the chosen set).
In grey: unused parameters.

The default values indicated in the next tables are quoted from version 2.0.2362.
