Background
Indonesia has seen rising levels of university

enrollment, with more people believing a degree will
lead to better-paying jobs. University graduates
accounted for 9.7 percent of Indonesia's workforce,
or 12.27 million of 133 million workers as of August
2019, according to BPS data.
The same data, however, revealed that 5.67

percent, or some 730,000 of the country’s 13
million university graduates, were unemployed. The
figure was higher than the country's overall
unemployment rate at the time of 5.28 percent,
which equates to 7.05 million people.
This figure does not include the roughly 2.8 million

people who have lost their jobs because of the
pandemic, according to data by the Manpower
Ministry and the Workers Social Security Agency
(BPJS Ketenagakerjaan).
A large pool of University graduates
however still not enough for the
Industry. Based on the discussion with
the Industry partners, having a
university degree does not guarantee
candidates will have the qualifications
and skills they are looking to hire.
In short, for many roles in leading

technology companies in Indonesia,
there is a gap between what Industry
needs and what today’s University
experience provides.

Bangkit: Pilot
Together with Tokopedia, Traveloka, and
Gojek, Google led Bangkit in 2020 as a pilot
program. From 2,500 eligible applicants,
300 motivated individuals from throughout
Indonesia were invited to enroll in Bangkit
2020. Participants completed over 300
hours of learning activities, including 36
assignments, and a final team project.
In the end, 219 participants graduated from

the program and many of them secured
employment or internships within only
weeks of completing the program.
Supported by over 70 volunteer instructors,
online facilitators, and mentors from Google
and our partners, Bangkit 2020 was a
resounding success.
Bangkit: 2021
Bangkit 2021 is an official Kampus Merdeka program initiated by Google and the Ministry of Education
and Culture - Republic of Indonesia. This means participants who complete this program will be eligible
(subject to the university's approval) for up to 20 university study credits (SKS).
As an official Kampus Merdeka - Independent Study program, the MoU has been signed by Google and
the MoE - so the university doesn’t need to get or sign MoU with Google/Bangkit.

Bangkit: 2021 - Capstone Project
Students will be divided into ~500 capstone project teams of approximately six
students each (two from each learning path). Teams will be asked to select a
project theme from a list of curated challenges to be identified with input from
relevant Government Ministries.
At the end of the program, the projects will be evaluated and the top ten
projects (one per host University Partner) will be provided with incubation
funding ($10,000 each) and will be further developed with support from host
Universities.
Each of the final ten projects will be assigned one mentor from the Bangkit
Industry partners (Google, Gojek, Tokopedia, Traveloka). The hope is that
through this process, it might help to establish the next batch of successful
technology startups in Indonesia.
