Symphonic Dance No.

3 “Fiesta” by Clifton William

Individual Lesson Plan - Julia Fabian

Objectives
● Students will be able to play F - H with correct notes and rhythms.
● Students will be able to identify melodic and accompanimental lines and who has them.
● Students will be able to balance to bring out the melodic line.
● Students will be able to play musically, following the written dynamics, as well as using
their own judgement to shape phrasing.
● Students will be able to match articulation and pitch.

Procedures
● Students play F - H with no concrete instructions.
● After playing: “What are 3 things that were done well, either individually or as an
ensemble?” Students give answers. “What are 3 things that could use some more
work?” Students give answers.
● Go off of the above, but also…
● “What is the melody? EVERYONE sing it”
● Students who have the melody (flutes and piccolos) play the section (or part of it).
“What is different about this section?”
○ Dynamics - piano (keep it soft, but remember that it’s the melody)
○ Articulation - slurs (smooth, very different compared to earlier)
○ Voicing - soli (be confident!)
● Students who have the accompaniment (everyone else) play the section (or part of it).
○ “What can you do to make this THE BEST accompaniment ever played?”
○ Dynamics - quiet! Let the melody come through. Students play it, and imagine
the melody while they play.
○ Articulations - waltz-like, match staccato notes (short, but not clipped, have a
nice lift).
○ Intonation - Students play the isolated chords, then put them in context.
● Put both parts together! Keep the above things in mind.
● Reflect
Assessment
● Students will be informally assessed through observation and listening throughout the
lesson.
● Students will be informally assessed through questioning and discussion throughout the
