Schools Should Not Ban Students from Using Social Networking Sites

Social networking site or SNS is an online platform that enables users to create a
public profile and connect with other users. Social networks are an increasingly
important aspect of how we interact and communicate regularly, from Facebook to
Snapchat to Twitter and beyond. In education, the use of social media provides
students with the opportunity to access more valuable information, to communicate
with learning communities and other educational systems that make education
convenient. Tools for social networks provide students and institutions with numerous
ways to enhance learning techniques.

Most educators and students find social networking a successful way to enhance
and develop skills in their personal learning network. SlideShare, Coursehero, Quora,
and ResearchGate, etc. are helping students by providing more information. Since
students already spend a lot of time on social media and engaging outside of school
hours with others, then why not do it during school? Another advantage of using SNS is
it can help improve or strengthen the teacher-student bond. It makes their overall
learning process more interesting and engaging. Using networking sites allows teachers
to post assignments, answer students’ queries, extend the in-class discussion, announce
upcoming events, and share more information. SNS provides also a means for fast and
effective communication. It improves student and teacher cooperation and enables the
exchange of ideas. In addition, these online networks will allow teachers to provide the
immediate feedback they need to their students.

On the contrary, many educators find it annoying when students use SNS,
especially during class discussions. Educators will have a hard time teaching if students
are not willing to listen and learn. They get easily distracted by looking at trends, when
someone follows them, or when one of their favorite Youtuber is posting a new video. A
student who uses too much SNS decreases face to face communication skills. They are
too attached to their phone, instead of talking to their friends personally. They are
wasting the opportunity to interact with their classmates or friends and it will eventually
change the relationship and bond. SNS is also not great for mental health. Students are
addicted that they neglect health responsibilities and prevents them from engaging in
physical activities and socialization. According to a study from Forbes, they have found
correlations between higher social media use and poorer mental health, including
depression, anxiety, feelings of loneliness and isolation, lower self-esteem, and even
suicidality.

As the president of the Parent-Teacher Association in this school, I oppose the

proposed policy. The school should not ban the use of social networking sites for
elementary and high school students as social networking sites are a huge part of daily
life and, there are many benefits that it can give for students and teachers. Social
networking not only improves student and teacher connections, but it also provides a
useful learning environment that enhances writing, reading, critical thinking, and
research.
