1. Educational Game Resource
Game Title: Grover’s Rhyme Time
Game URL: https://pbskids.org/sesame/games/grovers-rhyme-time
What learning objective(s) does it support The learning objective of this game is to find rhyming words.
a. How would you use this game in your class? Maybe at the end of the day, after
learning rhyming words for the first time, so the children can have practice.
b. Describe how the game looks/works and what the user must do to play? In this game
you control a by dragging lever to drive the train. The train starts off with one cart, on the cart an object is
displayed. In my case, I was given the object “clock”. Towards the end of the track your train must enter one of
the 3 tunnels. To enter the correct tunnel, you must find the correct rhyming word. They go through each word,
the you must select the right tunnel. If you select the wrong tunnel, they explain why it doesn’t rhyme and they
ask you to try again. You then after play a game where you must catch all of the falling objects by moving the
curser.
c. What is a strength and/or weakness of this game?
Strengths:
- Instructions are clear.
- I like how they walk you through each step
- I like how it explains why your answer is wrong
- I like how they read out the answer choices
Weakness:
- I wish the game spelled out the words as well. Rhyming words is not just similar
sounds, it is also same spelling. I was told to find the rhyming word to clock. One of my options was “dog”. This
word sounds like a rhyming word. But it is not spelled like one. I can see a student being confused and not
understanding why this Is not a correct choice. Having the spelling there, may clear up the confusion.
- In the game, you only practice with 3 rhyming words, then it is over. I feel like you don’t get much practice in
with this.
- After you choose the right word, you play a catching game. This game does not do anything for the learning
objective. It is a little fun, but it takes too long, and does not benefit the learner. It is pointless.
- While you are catching the audio says “Nice catch” repeatedly. There is no variation in the audio. It could be
annoying to the student.
d. Do you, as an instructor, need to train student to play?
No, not at all! They explain very well how to play(if your volume is on).
e. Choose a rating scale (5 apples, 10 stars, 2 thumbs up, etc.)
Based upon your use of this game, give it a rating. (4 out of 5 apples, etc.) 8 out of 10 stars.
