INTRODUCTION OF THE LESSON:

This module covers the key concepts of arithmetic means and arithmetic series. You will use their prior
knowledge and skills to learn and understand the basic idea about arithmetic means and series. You are also given enough
activities to process the knowledge and skills learned and further deepen and transfer their understanding of the lesson.

LESSON 1: ARITHMETIC SERIES (Day 1 and 2)

EXPLORE

Activity 1: IRF Worksheet (Formative)

In this activity, the learners will be able answer the essential question of this lesson on the Initial Column on their
Learning Activity Sheet. This activity serves as their initial answer to elicit their prior knowledge before introducing the
next lesson

In 3 minutes, please answer the essential question of this lesson on the Initial Column.

Essential Question:
How do you develop equations to describe arithmetic sequences and series, then use them to solve real
life problems?
Initial Answer Revised Answer Final Answer
Write your Answer here!

Activity 2: Summing up (Formative)

This activity that serve as drill and practice What is the sum of the terms of each finite sequence below?
1. 4, 7, 10, 13
2. 5, 10, 15, 20, 25
3. 11, 7, 3, -1, -5
4. 8, 14, 20, 26
Ask the students to make a generalization from the above activity

Activity 3: The Secrets of Karl (Formative)

Let the learners investigate the derivation of the formula for the sum of an arithmetic sequence in this activity through
“Think-Pair-Share.” Give learners enough time to think about the problem, then tell them to look for a partner to discuss
or share their quick solution to the problem. After the sharing, tell each pair to answer the given questions in the activity.

To determine the answer to the given problem, you may answer the following questions below:
1. What is the sum of each of the pairs 1 and 100, 2 and 99,
3 and 98... 50 and 51?
2. How many pairs are there in Question 1?
3. From your answers in #1 and #2, how do you get the sum
of the integers from 1 to 100?
4. What is the sum of the integers from 1 to 100?

FIRM-UP
After they answer their previous activities, they are able to read and understand the key concepts about summing up of
terms, arithmetic series, their definitions, derivations of different formulas and its illustrative examples

Listening Activity - Access and Process!

To firm up these lessons, the learners will be able to watch the following video presentation about arithmetic series by
following given links

Arithmetic Series

ILLUSTRATIVE EXAMPLES:

Example 1: Find the sum of the following:

a. first 25 positive integers. b. first 50 negative integers.
Example 2: Find the sum of the first 30 terms of the arithmetic sequence:18, 23, 28, 33, 38…
Example 3: Find the sum of first 18 terms of the arithmetic sequence which the general term is
an = 15 + 8n.
Example 4: Find the sum of the first 15 terms of the multiples of 7.

PRACTICE EXERCISE 1 (Formative)

After they learned some illustrative examples regarding to arithmetic series, they will be able to answer some exercises to
develop and enhance their skills in solving.
A. Find the sum of the terms of the finite arithmetic sequence (2 items)
B. Find the sum of the following: (5 items)
LESSON 2: ARITHMETIC MEANS (Day 3 and 4)

Activity 4: Revisiting the IRF Worksheet (Formative)

In this activity, the learners will be revisit the IRF Worksheet and answer the essential question of this lesson on the
Revised Colum on their Learning Activity Sheet. This activity serves as their revised answer to elicit their prior
knowledge during lesson and to determine the learning progress of a learner which had already learned during the lesson.

Go back to the IRF Worksheet, In 3 minutes, please answer the essential question of this lesson on the Revised Column.
(Please refer to Learning Activity Sheet)

Essential Question:

problems?
Initial Answer Revised Answer Final Answer
Answer done… Write your Answer here!

Finding a certain number of terms between two given terms of an arithmetic sequence is a common task in studying
arithmetic sequences. Now, we will learn how to find the the middle of the given arithmetic sequence.

Activity 5: What is in the Middle? (Formative)

Please answer the following questions:
A.: What is the middle between two numbers 3 and 5?
B. What is the missing number given the sequence? 1, 2, 3, ___, 5, 6, 7
C. What is the average of two numbers 1 and 7?

Guide Questions:
1. How did you get the answer in Letter A? Letter B? and Letter C?
2. Is there a common with your answers among these 3 questions? What have you notice with your
answers?

After they answer their previous activities, they are able to read and understand the key concepts about arithmetic means,
their formulas and its illustrative examples
