Information
To add or subtract decimals, write down the numbers one under the other, with the decimal
points lined up. Put in zeros (0) so the numbers have the same length. Then add, using column
addition. Remember to put the decimal point in the answer.
To multiply decimals and whole numbers including money, just multiply the factors like
you are multiplying whole numbers. Then, count the number of decimal places of the factors
starting from the rightmost to determine number of decimal places in the product.

Example
Lita, Rico and Fatima had ₱27.50, ₱35.75, ₱15.25 respectively. They bought 5 servings of
pakbet that costs ₱12.50 per serve. How much money did they have in all? How much did they pay for
pakbet? Did they have change? How much?

Now, let’s familiarize important details found in the table below.

Steps in solving problem Processing the problem
1. Understand
 What is asked in the problem? 1. The amount they have had in all.
2. The amount they paid for pakbet.
 What facts are given? 3. The amount of change.
Lita, Rico and Fatima have ₱27.50, ₱35.75, ₱15.25
respectively., ₱12.50 per serve
2. Plan
 Determine the operation to be used. Addition, Multiplication, Subtraction
 Write the number sentence.
₱27.50 + ₱35.75 + ₱15.25= N
₱12.50 x 5 = N
(₱27.50 + ₱35.75 + ₱15.25) – (₱12.50 x 5) = N
3. Solve (We will find the answer using 2 different methods.)
A. Using routine solution:
 To get the amount they have in all, just add the decimals that represent the money they have
respectively. So, we have,

₱27.50 + ₱35.75 + ₱15.25= N

₱27.50 vh Write down the numbers one under the other, with the decimal points lined up or
₱35.75 write the decimals in column form.
+ ₱15.25
₱78.50 The amount of money they had in all.

 To get the amount they pay for pakbet just multiply the decimals that represent the cost per
serving and the number of servings both. So, we have, ₱12.50 x 5 = N

12.50
vh Multiply the factors like you are multiplying whole numbers.
x 5
₱62.50 The amount they paid for pakbet.
 To get the amount of change, subtract the amount of pakbet from the total amount of money they
have. So, we have,

(₱27.50 + ₱35.75 + ₱15.25) – (₱12.50 x 5) = N

₱78.50
- ₱62.50
₱16.00 The amount of change.

B. Using non-routine solution: (Running Sum)

 To get the amount they have in all, (₱27.50 + ₱35.75 + ₱15.25 – (₱12.50 x 5) = N)
- Let us add first all the centavos. So, we have,
0.50
0.75
+ 0.25
1.50
- Let us add the whole numbers. So, we have,
27
35
+ 15
67
- Let us add 1.50 and 67. So, we have,
1.50
+ 67.00 Put in zeros (0) so the numbers have the same length.
₱78.50 Affix peso sign (₱) in solving problems involving money.
 To get the amount they paid for pakbet: (₱12.50 x 5 = N)
- Let us multiply first 50 centavos and 5. So, we have,
vh In multiplying decimals, arrange the numbers in
0.50 column form. Write the 2-digit number at the top,
x 5 in the1digit number at the bottom. Also,
2.50 remember to align the place values correctly.
Then start multiplying with the numbers at the
right.

- Let us multiply 12 and 5. So, we have,

12
x 5
60
- Let us add 2.50 and 60.
2.50
+ 60. 00 Put in zeros (0) so the numbers have the same length.
₱62.50 The amount they paid for pakbet.
 To get the amount of change:
- Let us subtract the amount paid for pakbet from the total amount of their money. So, we have:
₱78.50
- ₱62.50
₱16.00 The amount of change.

Final answer: Therefore,

 The amount of money they have had in all was ₱78.50.
 The amount they paid for pakbet was ₱62.50.
 The amount of change was ₱16.00.
Activity
Solve the problem.
1. The water bill costs ₱875.50 while the phone bill costs ₱687.25. How much will your
change be if you pay ₱2,000.00 for the bills?
2. One guava cost ₱2.75. How much will 3 dozen of guavas cost?
Answer Key:
1. ₱875.50
+ ₱687.25
₱1562.75 Total cost foe water bill and phone bill.

₱2,000.00 money
- ₱1,562.75 Total cost of water and phone bill.
₱437.25 The amount of change.

2. Hence:
3 dozens = 36 pieces
Therefore,
2.75
x 36
1650
+ 825_
₱99.00 Total cost of 3 dozens of guavas.
