• Technology is vital to the daily lives of people in
all parts of the world.

• The information technology is changing the way


people
p p live and learn.

• Schools being equipped technologically to meet


the needs of society.

• Are teachers being prepared for the changes in


the way people work professionally?

¾ Technologies are everywhere , but do teachers
understand the role of technology in society ?
¾ How technology has changed :
• the work environment
• Communications

• The dissemination of knowledge?
¾ Do teachers have the knowledge and skills to
use technology in instruction?

• What technology needs to be included in


teacher certification program?

• The National Standards and guidelines have


been written to address demands and
expectations for the inclusion of technology in
the preparation of teachers.

• The National standards are written to address


the knowledge, skills, and attitudes necessary
to apply informational technology in
educational settings.

• ISTE ( The International Society of Technology in Education
Foundations Standards for All Teachers) curriculum guidelines
related to technology in professional education
programs:
All candidates seeking initial certification or
endorsements in teacher preparation programs:
- should have opportunities to meet the educational
technology foundation standards.
- provide concepts and skills that prepare teachers
to teach computer/technology applications and use
technology to support other content areas.

- Professional preparation in educational computing


and technology literacy prepares candidates to
integrate teaching methodologies with knowledge
about the use of technology to support teaching

and learning.

• In Thailand, There is Educational Professional


Standards which includes 3 standards:
1.Standards of professional Knowledge and
Experience
2.Standards of Performance
3.Standards of Conduct
( Teacher Council of Thailand, 2005)
Under The Standards of professional Knowledge
and Experience; the technology for teachers is
the one that required by Teacher council of
Thailand to issue the Teaching License.

Roles of Technology

• Distance education was defined as a formal


educational process in which the instructor and
student are not the same location.

Thus; instructor might be synchronous or


asynchronous, it may involve communication
through the use of technologies.

Roles of Technology

• Hybrid/Blended online courses were


defined as a combination of online and
in-class instruction with reduced in-class
seat time for students.

• What should the teacher/instructor know


when considering using technology and
distance education???

Technology
• From the study of experiences of current and
former distance education student located in
remote area in Australia( Susan & Anthony, 2010)
• There were 3 areas emerged g as significant:
g
1. Students often experienced a sense of
isolation.
2. Students were affected by the attitudes and
knowledge of the teaching staff.
3. Students needs an understanding of and
ability to use the required technology.

• The main theme was the amount and quality


of interaction between the students and the
institution.

• Frequent communication with caring and


supportive individuals helped feelings of
isolation while the perception of being treated
differently .

• Some students benefit from learning with
technology as multi virtual environment,
formats.
• International collaboration among students
can occur in online format are made easier
than meeting in classroom.
• Online education; the instructions is coming
from one culture and might not follow the
norms of other cultures.
