1. In the video, we learned that the term “ecology“ has its Greek origin. (2)
Give the two (2) English translations of the Greek origin of the term “ecology.”
1.1 .STUDY OF HOUSE
1.2. STUDY OF THE PLACE WE LIVE IN
3. What is the reason for the need of all organisms to interact with other organisms in their
neighborhood and with their environment ? (1)
REASON: IN ORDER TO SURVIVE
4. The scope of ecology is huge, and it encompasses all organisms living on earth and their physical and
chemical surroundings.
Name the four (4) different levels of study into which the field of Ecology is divided. (4)
4.1. ORGANISMAL ECOLOGY
4.2. POPULATION ECOLOGY
4.3. COMMUNITY ECOLOGY
4.4. ECOSYSTEM ECOLOGY
6. With Organismal Ecology, individual species are linked to various adaptations to survive in its
environment
Give these three (3) adaptations (that individual species are linked to in order to survive in its
environment). (3)
6.1. BEHAVIORAL ADAPTATION
6.2. PHYSIOLOGICAL ADAPTATION
6.3. MORPHOLOGICAL ADAPTATION
7. In the video, we were shown an American alligator, as the subject to understand the different
adaptations of an organism in its environment.
How are the three (3) adaptations exemplified in the case of an alligator. (6)
7.1Behavioral adaptation: BECAUSE AN ALLIGATOR IS COLD-BLOODED, IT NEEDS TO MAXIMIZE
DAYLIGHT HOURS ABSORBING HEAT FROM THE SUN, SO IT HANGS OUT ON THE SWAMP BANKS
SOAKING UP THE RAYS.
7.2 Physiological adaptation: WHEN HUNTING - ESPECIALLY DURING COOLER OR CLOUDY DAYS - THE
ALLIGATOR WILL MOVE VERY SLOWLY AND IS ABLE TO HOLD ITS BREATH UNDERWATER FOR ALMOST
AN HOUR WAITING FOR ITS PREY.
7.3.Morphological adaptation: ALLIGATORS HAVE DEVELOPED EYES AND A NOSE ON THE TOP OF THEIR
HEADS SO THEY CAN HIDE JUST BELOW THE SURFACE WHILE STILL BEING ABLE TO LOOK OUT FOR PREY
AND PREDATORS.

9. Population Ecology examines the factors affecting population density and population distribution.
What is the difference between population density and population distribution? (4)
9.1 POPULATION DENSITY IS THE NUMBER OF INDIVIDUALS IN A GIVEN AREA OR VOLUME.
9.2 POPULATION DISTRIBUTION IS HOW SPREAD OUT THE INDIVIDUALS ARE IN THAT AREA OR HOW
POPULATIONS CHANGE OVER TIME.
10 How can ecologists determine the carrying capacity (maximum number of individuals) a habitat can
sustain? (2)
BY LOOKING AT BIRTH AND DEATH RATES OF SPECIFIC POPULATIONS.
11 How are ecologists helped by their knowledge of the carrying capacity of a habitat? (5)
THE KNOWLEDGE OF THE CARRYING CAPACITY OF A HABITAT HELPS ECOLOGISTS TO DETERMINE
WHETHER A SPECIES WILL THRIVE IN A PARTICULAR AREA, IF IT IS ENDANGERED, OR IF ITS NUMBERS
NEED TO BE CONTROLLED IN ORDER FOR OTHER SPECIES TO THRIVE AND RESOURCES TO BE
REPLENISHED.
