LANCADE ON TOP IN THE GERMAN GUINEAS

doors. The announcement was met with incredulity in some
quarters, particularly by those keen to blame the spread of
coronavirus on the Cheltenham Festival, but thank goodness
Ascot stuck to its resolve to go ahead, even in extraordinary
circumstances.
Of course the meeting lost some of its lustre, just as the
Classics have done so far, with none of the pomp and
circumstance which usually accompanies the racing, but the
racing is, after all, what Ascot is really about. The extended
fixture, with its extra six races, provided plenty of stories that
were heartwarming enough to have us believing that all is right
with the world again. Well, almost.

A Burst of Applause
For no better reason than the fact that the horse who has
been my beloved daily companion for the last 14 years is a son
of Royal Applause (GB) I've always had a soft spot for the 1997
G1 Haydock Sprint Cup winner.

At 27, Royal Applause is living in retirement

at the Royal Studs, an appropriate venue for a
sire who played a significant role in the
paternal line of seven of the 36 winners at
Royal Ascot.
By the final day the old boy was represented in his own right,
when his 7-year-old son Chiefofchiefs (GB) gave trainer Charlie
Fellowes his second winner of the meeting in the Silver
Wokingham. Ahead of that, however, the stallion most
responsible for the blossoming of this line in recent years, Dark
Angel (Ire), had provided one of the most explosive winners of
the week in the sprint star Battaash (Ire), as well as Art Power
(Ire) and Mountain Angel (Ire). The last-named and Battaash are
both 6-year-olds and represent one of Dark Angel's great
strengths as a stallion in the apparent durability of his stock.
Dark Angel's sire Acclamation (GB) of course deserves plenty
of credit. Runner-up to Choisir (Aus) in the G2 King's Stand S. of
2003, the 21-year-old's top-rated performer is Equiano (Fr), the
dual winner of that same race after its upgrading to Group 1
status. Equiano in turn is the sire of Equilateral (GB), who chased
home Battaash in the King's Stand this year, while another of
Acclamation's sons, Harbour Watch (Ire), made a posthumous
contribution through the thrilling G2 King Edward VII S. victory
of Pyledriver (GB), who may now be a rare Derby runner for this
sireline.
There are now at least nine sons of Dark Angel at stud in
Europe, and two of those also provided winners at Ascot. The
G1 Commonwealth Cup winner Golden Horde (Ire) lives in the
stable once occupied by his sire Lethal Force (Ire) at Clive Cox's
Lambourn yard. He brought further fitting success for that stable
on Friday when becoming the first Group 1 winner for his sire,
who moved from Cheveley Park Stud to Haras de Grandcamp for
the 2020 covering season.
Furthermore, Mickley Stud's Heeraat (Ire) got the ball rolling
for a hugely successful week for his former owner Sheikh
Hamdan when his son Motakhayyel (GB) won the opening race
of the meeting in the Shadwell blue and white.
Dark Angel has two sons with first-crop runners this season:
Tara Stud's Estidhkaar (Ire), who has already sired three
winners, and Markaz (Ire), the full-brother to the brilliant mare
Mecca's Angel (Ire) who is at Derrinstown and got off the mark

Kodiac's memorable day was completed by Hello Youmzain
(Fr)'s victory in the G1 Diamond Jubilee S., giving young jockey
Kevin Stott both his first Group 1 win and his first victory at
Royal Ascot. Like London buses, Stott and trainer Kevin Ryan
struck again in the very next race when Hey Jonesy (Ire)
(Excelebration {Ire}) stuck his nose out to win the Wokingham.
The 4-year-old Hello Youmzain, who races for the partnership of
France's Haras d'Etreham and New Zealand's Cambridge Stud,
quite clearly already has a dual-hemisphere stallion career
mapped out for him.
Roger O'Callaghan, who will offer three Kodiac 2-year-olds
among an eight-strong Tally-Ho Stud draft for this week's
Tattersalls Ascot and Craven Breeze-up Sale, said of Saturday's
results, "It was mighty, unreal. It was beyond our expectations
really, and I am also delighted for Joe Foley and for
Yeomanstown, it was a great week for the Irish stallion
industry."
Fine And Dandy
As noted by O'Callaghan above, the joy for Ireland's
independently owned studs didn't end with the O'Callaghan
family. Joe Foley enjoyed a juvenile group-race double on Friday
for his Ballyhane Stud stallions through The Lir Jet (Ire) and

Dandalla (Ire), representing the first-season sire Prince Of Lir
(Ire)--himself a former winner of the G2 Norfolk S.--and the
established Dandy Man (Ire).
The Lir Jet, who was bought by Qatar Bloodstock after his
debut win at Yarmouth, might be considered to be the one who
got away for the Tattersalls Ascot Breeze-up Sale, which makes a
belated appearance this week.
Foley bought the colt as a foal from his breeder Donal Boylan
for i9,500 and then sold him for ,8,000 at the Goffs UK
Premier Yearling Sale to breeze-up pinhooker Robson Aguiar.
With the sales season delayed amid the COVID-19 pandemic,
Aguiar took the sensible decision to do a deal with Nick Bell
which enabled The Lir Jet to make the most of his precocity by
racing from the Newmarket stable of Bell's father Michael. Now,
while many of his fellow sales entries are breezing on the
Rowley Mile on Monday ahead of Thursday's sale, The Lir Jet is
already a Group 2 winner who has given an important boost to
his young sire.
"The warm, fuzzy feeling hasn't worn off yet," Foley said on
Sunday. "The Lir Jet had no lookers at the yearling sale except
for Robson. I've bought two good breezers from Robson for
Clipper Logistics in recent years, so I admire and respect him. I
strongly encouraged him to buy the colt last year at Doncaster
and Robson, to his credit, told me in February this year that he

We started this column with speed and we'll end with the star

CRAVEN AND ASCOT BREEZE UP SALE
All of the breezes for the upcoming Tattersalls Craven & Ascot
Breeze Up Sale will be shown live at www.tattersalls.com on
both the Tattersalls main page and the Tattersalls Ascot main
page, the sales company announced on Sunday. Beginning at 9
a.m. local time at Newmarket=s Rowley Mile on June 22, the
breezes will be split, with the Craven Breeze Up Sale juveniles

WIN PAVES BC PATH

From defeat in maidens at Newcastle and Hawkesbury to
victory in the GI Jaipur S. at Belmont Park in New York on
Saturday, Australian-bred Oleksandra (Animal Kingdom {USA})
has charted an amazing trajectory which will see her contest the
G1 Breeders' Cup Turf Sprint in November.
The fast-finishing success saw the mare crowned the first
Australian-bred winner of an American Grade I race this century
and she becomes the second of Animal Kingdom's progeny, after
G1 Australian Derby winner Angel Of Truth, to win at the top
level.
The success is particularly sweet for Oleksandra's owners,
Team Valor International, who bred and raced G1 Kentucky
Derby and Dubai World Cup-winner Animal Kingdom, and who,
in partnership with Arrowfield Stud, brought him to Australia,
where he stood for four seasons.
In Animal Kingdom's first season in Australia, Team Valor's CEO
Barry Irwin sent one of his most highly credentialled
Arrowfield-based mares, the South African-bred Group 3 winner
and Group 1-placed Alexandra Rose (SAf) (Caesour {USA}), to
Animal Kingdom, and the result was a filly who was sent to Bjorn
Baker to train.
Oleksandra had three starts for Baker, placing at Newcastle,
Randwick and Hawkesbury before heading to America in early
2018 to be trained by Neil Drysdale, who had trained her dam
when she raced in the US later in her career.
Oleksandra broke her maiden at Santa Anita in October 2018
and after winning at that track again in January 2019, would win
a pair of races at Belmont Park this time last year. Her win in the
Listed Ladies Sprint S. and the GIII Buffalo Trace Franklin County
S. towards the back end of last year took her American record to
six wins from 10 starts.
She resumed in 2020 with a second in the Santa Anita race her
dam had won in 2008, the GII Monrovia S., before her stunning
late surge captured a breakthrough Grade I success under jockey
Joel Rosario on Saturday.
"It was pretty exciting. She's been very good and we always
thought she had what it took to win a race like this," Irwin told
TDN AusNZ. "Today, everything went her way. The preparation
was outstanding, the timing was good and the field was loaded
with speed, which helped set it up for her. It was a case of
everything falling into place, and to win a Grade I, that's what
has to happen."
The win also secured Oleksandra a spot in the GI Breeders' Cup
Turf Sprint in November, a race which will be her main target for
the remainder of the season before she is likely to be offered at
the Keeneland November Breeding Sale.
"In addition to winning it, she gets her entry fee paid for the
Breeders' Cup. That's the race we will point her towards. It's at
Keeneland, and her only start at Keeneland last year she won a
huge race. We will run her once or twice more before the
Breeders' Cup and then return here [Kentucky] and she will be
sold through Keeneland a couple of days later," Irwin said.
Irwin Moving Away from Us Racing
While he has tasted elite success as a breeder and owner in his
home country with the likes of Animal Kingdom and now
Oleksandra, Irwin is now concentrating on his racing interests in
Europe, the UK and Ireland.
"Lately, I've been focussing 100%t on Europe. I'm phasing out
my American operation, and I'm focussing on England, Ireland,
France and Germany. I trust the racing there," he said.
Irwin has also cut his breeding interests right back in recent
years.

"I have got rid of most of my broodmares around the world
now. I bred for several years, but I hadn't had much luck lately.
At my age, and given my business, I am just interested in racing.
Breeding is a heartbreaking thing," he said. "It can work and this
filly here is a homebred, by a homebred, and both won Group
1s. I've been in the game for 50 years and that's never
happened to me before. That should tell you something about
how rare she is."
Alexandra Rose Still Going Strong
Alexandra Rose remains Irwin's one broodmare in Australia.
Located at Arrowfield, she holds a big place in his heart and he
credits her mostly for the elite sprinting talent that Oleksandra
has inherited.
"In my opinion, this mare has nothing to do with Animal
Kingdom. She is much more like her mother. Animal Kingdom
never sprinted in his life. The shortest race he ever ran in was
the Breeders' Cup Mile," he said. "The dam of this filly was a
tremendous sprinter. She was a graded winner at Santa Anita
and she was a Group 2 winner in South Africa. She also placed in

the Cape Verdi in Dubai and this mare, is a reflection of the dam.
I don=t see a lot of Animal Kingdom in her to tell you the truth."
Oleksandra's yearling younger brother, Prince Alexander,
remains in the Team Valor ownership and is from the final
Australian crop of Animal Kingdom.
"He's in the very early stages of being broken in. He's been in
the gates a couple of times and it=s very early in the journey. It's
hard to tell anything about him at this stage of the journey but
he's with Limitless Lodge," Irwin said.
Alexandra Rose is in foal to Coolmore's Mendelssohn (USA),
while Irwin is not yet decided who she will go back to in 2020.
"I love Mendelssohn. I have got a mare from his female family
and I thought he was a sensational racehorse. His career was
probably a little strange, in terms of where he raced, through no
fault of his own, but I think of all the young stallions in the
world, he is the one that interests me the most."
Irwin feels his latest success with an Australian homebred
mare in a top American sprint race is particularly satisfying,
given his global approach to racing and breeding over the years.
"I'm an adventurous guy and even when I was a turf writer, I
always gravitated towards the international aspects of it all. I
have the ability to do that as I have partners that are very game
and they trust me. We=ve done a lot of adventurous things, and
some work and some don=t," he said.

Coming off one of the most talked about performances of the
DIFFICULT YEAR year, >TDN Rising Star= Gamine (Into Mischief) is headed back to
the barn of Bob Baffert, who will wait a few weeks before
deciding what=s next for the 3-year-old filly.
Nothing could have overshadowed the win in the GI Belmont
S. by Tiz the Law (Constitution), but Gamine came close in the
GI Acorn S. With John Velazquez aboard, she won by 18 3/4
lengths and her time for the mile, 1:32.55, shattered the stakes

nationwide have been canceled or curtailed. The Triple Crown
races have been shifted out of order with one radical distance
alteration. Jockeys soar through homestretches wearing
protective masks as a pandemic precaution in front of eerily
empty grandstands, where fans have been ordered to stay away
for everyone=s own good.
We hear repeatedly how everyone in the industry is doing the
best they can under arduous and unprecedented circumstances
brought on by COVID-19. There is truth in that statement, but
people can only do so much. For horse racing to persevere
during difficult times, the best chance to pull us through is the
Thoroughbred itself.
Now, after his tour-de-force romp in the GI Belmont S., it is
clear that Tiz the Law (Constitution) has emerged the sport=s
horse of hope. It=s probably unfair to saddle Tiz=s compact,
powerful bay shoulders with so heavy a burden. But the
charismatic colt has been up to the task of handling everything
thrown at him so far. His race record is a near-perfect 5-for-6,
but that stat doesn=t fully encapsulate the flair and panache with
which he=s dispatched his overmatched foes. Cont. p3

As an aggressive stalker, Tiz the Law=s early races were
hallmarked by a knack for putting himself into precarious
positions and then extricating himself with a Houdini-like
flourish. He won sprinting in his Saratoga debut against New
York-breds, then leapt the chasm to Grade I stakes company by
annexing the Champagne S. after stumbling at the start and
getting trapped on heels before finishing full of run.
His connections--owner Sackatoga Stable and trainer Barclay
Tagg--thought the GI Breeders= Cup Juvenile a month later might
be too much too soon, so they instead pointed Tiz to the GII
Kentucky Jockey Club S. at Churchill Downs Nov. 30. Off as the
3-5 favorite in a sea of slop, jockey Manny Franco repeatedly
had to ride the brakes to keep Tiz from getting pocketed on the
backstretch and again in the home straight. The colt ended up
third, beaten three-quarters of a length, his only defeat to date.

After a brief Florida freshening, Tiz had his 3-year-old unveiling

in the GIII Holy Bull S., a prep on the GI Kentucky Derby trail that
has evolved into a notorious annual trap for highly touted
sophomores (favorites going down in defeat in nine of the
previous 11 runnings). Tiz shot out of the gate, cruised four deep
into the clubhouse bend, then dove to the fence. This
maneuvering meant yet another dicey backstretch placement
for Tiz, who steadied off heels under more momentum-drag
braking. But once repositioned outside, he relished the pursuit
of prey, collaring the pacemaker and leaving the remainder of
the field reeling with a 100 Beyer Speed Figure win that was
easier than the three-length final margin suggested.
After missing a few days of training in early March because of
a minor foot bruise, the GI Curlin Florida Derby was next. Tiz
broke running and enjoyed a clean trip while energetically
forcing the issue.

Tiz the Law powered past the frontrunners at will, and for the
first time left the impression that he was merely toying with the
competition while honing a fast-maturing level of confidence
into something akin to a swagger.
The pandemic had already disrupted the Triple Crown prior to
Tiz=s Florida Derby win, but you didn=t hear the colt=s
connections carping in public about how fate had stolen away
their chance at favoritism in the Run for the Roses. Instead, Tagg
and Sackatoga managing partner Jack Knowlton pretty much
said they=d take on all comers at whatever race spacing and
distances the Triple Crown turned out to be, perhaps even with
a Saratoga stakes in between for good measure.

The Belmont S. ended up being first in the series, shortened to

a one-turn nine furlongs out of deference to the coronavirus
disruption. Tiz was once again fleet from the starting stall and
Manny Franco gathered him up in hand while allowing the two
main speed threats to come through to his inside. Always in
striking range within 2 1/2 lengths of the lead, Tiz was a
formidable presence while in authoritative stalk mode, coiled
but not fully unleashed until the head of the vast Belmont Park
homestretch. He nosed his distinctive white blaze in front
coming off the turn, shot into an unmatchable gear when cued
to quicken, and even while assertively handled through the lane
didn=t appear to be fully extended or at the limits of his stamina
reserves in another 100-Beyer trouncing.
Tiz the Law is an easy horse to root for. He can press the pace
at a high cruising speed against the best East Coast sophomores
and still stick around to win going away by open lengths. Every
one of his victories has been decided by the eighth pole. He runs
major-league speed numbers and never looks sapped or wilted.
He=s sensibly managed by connections that clearly enjoy the
journey as much as the outcome, and they=re transparent and
highly quotable when asked to share their plans for Tiz.

Even Tagg, known for decades as a Ahorseman=s horseman,@

can come across as charmingly crusty, like he did on Saturday
when he reportedly told a Belmont television interviewer that
the trophy presentation and post-race questions had better be
quick because he had work to do back at the barn.
Next up for Tiz is the GI Runhappy Travers S. at Saratoga. The
New York Racing Association just announced last week that the
showcase race of the summer would be moved up several
weeks to Aug. 8 in order to better mesh with the remaining two
legs of the Triple Crown (Derby Sep. 5 and GI Preakness S. Oct.
3).
Fittingly, the date of the 2020 Travers will coincide with the
one-year anniversary of Tiz the Law=s winning debut at Saratoga.
British turf writer Simon Barnes once wrote that AToo much
hope is perhaps the worst sin in horse racing.@
That may be true. But right now our sport can use all the
optimistic anticipation it can get. So bring on the hope--and the
hype--for Tiz the Law.

Baffert Will Point to Oaks with Gamine

Baffert said the main goal for Gamine is the Sept. 4
GI Kentucky Oaks, but he=s not sure what route he will take to
get her there. Gamine will likely have one start between now
and the Oaks and possibilities include the GI Ashland S. at
Keeneland July 11 and the GI Coaching Club American Oaks July
18 at Saratoga.
If Gamine is to face males the most likely spot for that would
be in the Oct. 3 GI Preakness S. Owner Michael Lund Petersen

AShe was doing so well for the Acorn,@ Baffert said. AI thought
this was going to be her breakout race and it was. That was a
pretty decent field she beat. With the timing, the Acorn was a
perfect spot for her. I had been working her easy, sitting behind
horses. She had been relaxing really well. Then she drew the
one. I told Johnny that she is fast and just let her run. You can=t
take too much of a hold on her because then she=ll try to get out
and she is a little headstrong. We=ll get her back here, freshen her Tiz the Law | Sarah Andrew
up, give her a couple of weeks without breezing her. When they
run like that, that fast, I like to give them a couple of weeks off.@ AConsidering he broke his maiden the day after Tiz the Law
won the Florida Derby, that=s a lot of progress to make in a short

Blitzkrieg, winner of last year=s GIII San Francisco Mile at
Golden Gate, added a second graded victory to his resume with
a wire-to-wire score in the GIII American S. at Santa Anita
Sunday. The dark bay gelding took control shortly after the
break and was clear through fractions of :23.02 and :46.42. He
skipped further clear turning for home and bound down the lane
an easy winner.

AHis last work was phenomenal. He went six furlongs, on his
own, in :58 4/5 and galloped out in 1:12,@ said Leandro Mora,
assistant to trainer Doug O=Neill. AHe worked so good, we were
tempted to put him back on the dirt, but we stuck to the plan
and I=m glad we did. I told Victor [Espinoza] that with Bolo
drawn way outside, let=s go and I think maybe we can steal it.
He=s back, no question. This is the horse we thought we had all
along.@
Espinoza added, AThe pace was pretty quick, but he was doing
it so easy, for me every time I ride a horse like him with speed, I
like to just sit up there and have fun.@
Blitzkrieg, claimed for $25,000 in January 2019, capped a four-
race win streak with his 1 1/2-length victory in the San Francisco
Mile. He was a well-beaten seventh when switched to the main
track for the GI Gold Cup at Santa Anita in May and disappeared
until a creditable fourth-place effort in the 5 1/2-furlong GII Joe
Hernandez S. over the Santa Anita turf Jan. 1. Wintering in
Dubai, the dark bay gelding was fourth in the Jan. 23 G2 Al
Fahidi Fort, second in the Feb. 6 Abu Dhabi Trophy Dubai Sprint,
and third in the Feb. 20 G2 Meydan Sprint before again trying

UP THE STRETCH AWARDS: >THE STRETCHIES!=

For the past few years, we have celebrated the highs, and
sometimes lows, of the Royal Ascot meet with A Tip of the Top
Hat awards.
Originally over these five days, we presented >The Down the
Stretch= awards, but the homestretch at Ascot is a gradual uphill
tussle. I think it is much harder for a Thoroughbred to pull, to dig
down deep on the incline in the final three furlongs. Very trying
and tiring. Thus, the Up The Stretch Awards.
Here are the 2020 STRECHIE winners.
The winner of the QUICK TURNAROUND AWARD is also the
hero and the goat this week. We in the colonies don't see
Thoroughbreds, especially at this high level, return to the racing
wars so soon after a race. Hey Jonesy (Ire) (Excelebration) {Ire})
finished 22nd in a field of 23 Tuesday at 33-1 in The Buckingham
Handicap. So when you saw this longshot roll right back with
only four days rest, and leave the starting gate at only 17-1 on
Saturday in the seven-furlong Wokingham S., wouldn't you
scratch your head and wonder where the money was coming
from? Even more baffling is the fact that this gelding beat 21
others to win by a nose! Well, there you have the goat Tuesday,
becoming the hero Saturday. His victory was the low point in the
week for me.
MONDAY • JUNE 22, 2020
The very BEST PERFORMANCE BY A HORSE was Stradivarius
(Ire) (Sea the Stars {Ire}), a sensational stayer, bred and owned
by Bjorn Nielsen. The now 6-year-old won the G1 Gold Cup for a
remarkable third year in a row. Like Forego and Kelso,
Stradivarius seems to be getting better as he ages. His margin of
victory was 10 geared-down lengths. And Thursday, Frankie
Dettori riding for trainer John Gosden on the gallant veteran
completed this very difficult hat-trick. Leading the stretch
procession was simply breathtaking.
The HIGHWAY ROBBERY STRETCHIE goes to Pinatubo (Ire)
(Shamardal) in the G1 St. James's Palace S. Pinatubo had won six
out of six as a 2-year old, and was the heavy, heavy favorite
Saturday. He finished second, and (in U.S. dollars) paid $2.02 for
a $2 tote bet in England.
BEST SINGLE RIDE AWARD goes to Ryan Moore, who I think
may have been the only rider who could have coaxed, muscled,
bullied and pushed Circus Maximus (Ire) (Galileo {Ire}) to a nose
tally in the G1 Queen Anne S. I should also salute the gutsy and
tough winner, trained by Aidan O'Brien.
TOP TRAINER UP THE STRETCH AWARD goes to the classiest of
gentlemen, John Gosden. He gave himself a good excuse for
Stradivarius before the race, if he had lost. John was not
comfortable with the soft designation of the course. How
wasted his words. It looks like Stradivarius could run on mushy
porridge and still win.
THE INVADER AWARD goes to Wesley Ward. A super
professional outstanding trainer, who is also a great ambassador
for America at the highest level of European Thoroughbred
competition. Wesley finally got his 11th Royal Ascot victor on
Friday with Campanelle (Ire) (Kodiac {GB}). He is the most
famous American trainer at Ascot because of his extraordinary
ground-breaking efforts at the Royal meeting. And the locals
love him.
THE RITZ UP THE STRETCH AWARD is not now called the
Leading Jockey of the Royal meeting. I'm going back to the
previous moniker. Give THE RITZ AWARD to Frankie Dettori,
showman, exuberant, crowd-loving Italian, who is also, at age
49, one of the best jockeys in the world. Like Kelso, Forego and
Stradivarius, Frankie gets better and smarter as the years pile
up. When I was working at Santa Anita, many journalists and
broadcasters said Bill Shoemaker should retire. Soon after that,
AShoe@ rode the winner of the Kentucky Derby. Don=t retire,
Frankie.

LUNCH OF THE WEEK award this year will go vacant. Scribes like
me enjoyed the extravagant buffet spreads in the Ascot Press
Box. But this year those great repasts were non-existent.
Somehow the ballpark franks I have been having for lunch, even
with Skyline chili, just doesn't get the same dining star rating
from Bobby Flay. Maybe next year?
THE BACHELOR AWARD goes to Tom Marquand, who won his
first Royal Ascot race 24 hours after his girlfriend Hollie Doyle
won her initial Royal tally. Tom took the Queen Alexandra S. on
Who Dares Wins (Ire) (Jeremy).
THE JOHN HENRY AWARD (for old timers) goes to a repeat
winner. The 94-year-old owner of Tactical (GB) (Toronado {Ire}),
hero of The Windsor Castle S. Every year, for the past 86 years,
she has attended all days of the Royal Meeting. If you don't
think being a fan of this beautiful and exciting sport keeps you
young, check out how racing has kept owner, breeder, and fan
still on top of her game. She is also the Queen of England,
Elizabeth II. Hope to see you next June.

to Google Dictionary. It is therefore a fitting name for the terrific

Dismissed at 21-1 despite a flashy local tab, Chris Drakos and
Ryan Hanson=s Weston (Hit it a Bomb) blasted out of the gate
and never looked back to become the first winner for his
freshman sire (by War Front) at Santa Anita Sunday. Scrubbed
along to seize a narrow advantage on the fence, the $7,000
KEESEP bargain buy headed for home with a clear advantage as
only $550,000 OBSMAR purchase Ambivalent (Constitution)
seemed to have any shot to catch him. Weston had no thoughts
of stopping, however, and streaked home 1 1/4 lengths in front,
stopping the clock in :52.27.
A winner of both of his Irish starts at two for Aidan O=Brien and
owner/breeder Evie Stockwell, Hit It a Bomb overcame the 14
hole to take the 2015 GI Breeders= Cup Juvenile Turf at

Warren=s Showtime displayed good versatility Sunday to earn a
first stakes win on the dirt to go with three on the turf. A 35-1
upset winner of the open Surfer Girl S. here last October, the
chestnut was third in the Golden State Juvenile Fillies S.
sprinting over this same surface Nov. 1. She returned to the
local sod to post victories in the Jan. 18 California Cup Oaks and
Mar. 7 China Doll S. (again against unrestricted company), and
was fourth when cutting back against for the Cal-bred Evening
Jewel S. May 16. Last seen settling for third against older foes in
the Fran=s Valentine S. June 6--good for a career-best 88 Beyer
Speed Figure--she got a bit lost on the board as the bulk of tote
attention fell on unbeaten Big Sweep and Evening Jewel S.
winner Smiling Shirlee. Perched out wide in second last early,
Warren=s Showtime mounted a strong four-deep bid heading for
home eventually wore down a game Smiling Shirlee to prevail.

Big Runnuer was a sharp debut winner over course and
distance in October, and earned a 91 Beyer Speed Figure facing
winners at Del Mar Nov. 8. He earned a 93 Beyer when beaten a
nose over a mile back in San Diego Dec. 1, and was third cutting
back here Dec. 29. The lightly raced bay earned a belated
second victory over this course May 25, but broke last this time
as the favorite while sporting blinkers for the first time. He
tugged his way through rivals willingly all the way up to lead,
busted the race open on the turn and was simply not for

Bredenbury capped a productive weekend for the Motion barn
that also included seconds in the GI Jaipur S., G1 Coronation S.
and GII Wise Dan S. On the board in three of four starts last year
in England--all at this distance--for David Simcock, the chestnut
was sixth in Aqueduct=s Chelsey Flower S. first time for these
connections Nov. 3 over a mile and fifth behind She=s My Type in
Gulfstream=s Ginger Brew S. going a similar distance Jan. 4. She
stepped forward to be a close second to next-out GIII Florida
Oaks heroine Outburst (GB) (Outstrip {GB}) in a Tampa optional
claimer Feb. 7, and was wheeling back relatively quickly off a
fourth-place run against older rivals in a local June 5 allowance.
Away alertly from her rail draw, Bredenbury chased Chili Petin
(City Zip) from second before coming to tackle that foe after a
:44.20 half. She=s My Type produced a strong late run, but
Bredenbury had too much left in the tank and was always doing
plenty.
AIt was a great trip,@ said winning rider Luis Saez. AI had a plan
and everything went the way we expected it would. [Chili Petin]
went to the lead and my plan was to follow them, sit right there
and when they turn to the stretch, make our move. She
responded really well. I was very confident. I knew when we
came into the stretch that I had a lot of horse ... She could go a
little further, for sure. When I turned her loose, she gave a really
good kick.@
