Charlatan (blue shadow roll) claims Nashville (right) turning for home
IN TDN EUROPE TODAY
in Saturday’s GI Runhappy Malibu S. | Benoit SEASON OF CHANGE AT HARAS D’ETREHAM
Emma Berry takes a closer look at the sire-making establishment
by Alan Carasso Haras d’Etreham, which welcomes Hello Youmzain and Persian
King in 2021. Click or tap here to go straight to TDN Europe.
A pair of Speightstown ‘TDN Rising Stars’--Nashville and
Charlatan--looked to have their four rivals over a barrel in
Saturday’s GI Runhappy Malibu S., the traditional post-Christmas
opening day feature at Santa Anita Park. The former had the
benefit of recency, his three wins from as many starts coming by
24 3/4 lengths combined, while the latter was resurfacing for
the first time since crossing the line best in the slightly slower of
the two divisions of the GI Arkansas Derby May 2. Nashville was
sent off the 13-10 favorite to continue his streak, but Charlatan
belied his absence with a thoroughly dominating victory,
treating those who maintained the faith to a relatively juicy
$5.20 as the second betting choice. Express Train (Union Rags)
and Collusion Illusion (Twirling Candy) filled out the minors, as
Nashville struggled home a well-beaten fourth.
“They were rolling early, there was a really good horse he was
chasing,” said Baffert. “I’m just happy for the whole team and
everybody involved, to show he is a really special horse.
Hopefully, we will have a good year [2021] with him.”

An unlucky loser of the Nov. 28 GI Hollywood Derby down at
Del Mar, Smooth Like Strait bounced back in no uncertain terms
with an easier-than-it-looked victory in Saturday’s GII Mathis
Brothers Mile S. on opening day at Santa Anita.
The prohibitive favorite was away in good order for Umberto
Rispoli and took the sit from second, allowing John Velazquez
aboard champion Storm the Court to call the shots from the
front. Always traveling sweetly off the leader’s flank, Smooth
Like Strait engaged the hard-ridden pacesetter after six furlongs
in 1:10.12, showed in front when heads were turned from home
and was punched out to score by a measured margin.
"We knew Storm the Court would be going for the lead, so I
just wanted to sit back of him," the winning jockey said. "We got
the perfect trip. When it came time to ask him in the stretch, he
was ready to go."
