Mother: Ok, what di I need to know?

Mother: Great, that should be easy, I’ve been doing it my whole life
Midwife: Yes, but it is a little different with labor. There are two main stages of breathing
Mother: Oh, I did not know that. Wow, it sound more complicated than I thought.
Midwife: Not really. Don’t worry. You’ll (2)………………….and I will of course be there to help.
Mother: Thank you Susan
Midwife: Ok. Now, the first stage is called early labor breathing. You should focus on slowly inhaling and exhaling throughout your
contraction. It can help to count while you are doing this. Now let’s practice, shall we?
Mother: Ok
(Practicing breathing…………………………………………………)
Midwife: Very good. Now the second stage is called active stage breathing. As each contraction starts you should continue to inhale
through your nose and exhale through your mouth as you were doing during the earlier phase.
Mother: Ok, I can do that
Midwife: As the intensity increases you can start to shake shallower, quicker breaths. As the contraction peaks it may help to breath in
and out through your mouth as if you are painting-you could try (3)…………and exhalation every few breaths. So try that.
(Practicing breathing…………………………………………………)
Mother : How am I doing?
Midwife: You are doing great. That’s excellent. Now, when the intensity of the contraction begins to lessen, you should try and resume
even inhalation through your nose and out through your mouth. That’s perfect. You will be a pro at this in no time.
Mother: Thank you, Susan, but I must admit you are a great teacher.
Midwife: You’re welcome.
